  1. Weeks production is most certainly less of a concern than Braun or Fielder. If each of those players raise their OPS by .100 I'll be ok with where Weeks is but still consider Fielder and Braun as underproducing.
  2. I have no clue what you just said but I'd say by ERA they would have to at least post back to back bad years and by peripherals at least one bad year. Any GM worth having on the team is going to downplay ERA and look at deeper stats first and know that ERA is just highly variable.
  3. Marquis was toast before last year. Doug Davis was toast before last year. Carlos Silva was toast before last year. Josh Beckett was toast before last year. Mark Buehrle was toast before last year. Javier Vazquez was toast before last year. Tim Judson was toast before last year. Joe Blanton was toast before last year. All of those guys had 4.80+ ERA in 2006. If you are going to use ERA as your lead indicator you will be a bad GM pure and simple. There is no reason to expect Bush and Capuano to be anything worse than #4 type starters going into this year. That has nothing to do with Melvin being a bad GM. Sorry but I'm a stickler for statistics, Bush should be a mid to high 4 ERA type and Capuano should be a mid low to mid 4 ERA type given how they pitched last year. Any GM with a brain realizes this and projected them as such. I cannot blame Melvin at all for assuming at least one of them pans out as the #4 or #5 starter on the team with one of the young guys filling in at as the other one.
  4. Bill Hall is not a good player, it is simple as that. I think out of all the current Brewer starting hitters he is the lowest upside overall out of the bunch. He had a year where he was hot all season and got a bigger contract than he probably should have. He is erratic defensively and just horrible with his approach at the plate.
  5. Every mid range team has large prolonged slumps though, you can't freak out about it and yell the sky is falling every time. To me the fans that freak out over every little 10 day slump are those that just haven't watched baseball that closely in a long time and think this is something just our team goes through.
  6. It is insane to ignore the larger sample on Capuano and Bush and throw them under the bus because of one bad season where our defense was horrible and their peripherals were better than their results. If Melvin replaced those guys as end of rotation players because of last years ERA he would be a bad GM, what he did was being a good GM regardless of how it works out. Turnbow is a good example of a bad contract because his numbers were extremely flukish and there was no reason to expect him to be good again. Capuano is a bad example because there was no reason to expect another bad season out of him other than the fact he got hurt.
  7. Depends on what you mean by don't worry. When I say don't worry it means the team will come out of it's slump and that is exactly what happened when everyone freaked out last May after the bad road series. It happened again after the bad August. It never meant don't worry we are a lock for the playoffs which the more negative crowd seems to take it as. This team has its best baseball ahead of it this season, I don't think the playoffs are likely because of the Gallardo injury but this is a slump, not a team that just has no talent. Every team is going to go through slumps and you can't freak out over every one of them.
  8. Hart was rated as having the weakest arm of any RF in baseball statistically according to one study I read(which I can't find the link for now, think it was by Dan Fox). I haven't seen him really impress me with any throws personally but I only watch about half the games (listen to the other half) so maybe I just missed it.
  9. There is no reason to expect Capuano, Bush, Villanueva and Parra to all fail at the major league level though. Gallardo, Sheets, Suppan gave us a relatively stable top of the rotation and we had a mix of mediocre vets and upside youth in the #4 and #5 spots. Very few teams have solid sure things starters 1-5. I still don't see how you say Melvin was lacking in vision to lead to this, we lost two guys for the year very early in the year and it created holes. There is still time for Villanueva or Parra to step up and become the pitchers most expect them to be. (edit: long quote --1992)
  10. It isn't like I'm watching the game cheering for bad stuff to happen to the Brewers. My point is if the season is going to ultimately end up being a failure (and I'm not saying it is going to end up a failure, but if it does end up being one), I'd rather see us fail hard to get rid of Yost than stagger along and play just good enough to keep him. Yost is a bad in game manager and I personally don't think he is much of a people person but I can't really know just how the players respond to him.
  11. I would wait and see what Villy and Parra look like at the end of the year before deciding what to do with the pitching. I just cannot see signing Sheets long term as a sure thing must do deal. It is a very complicated question since there is a ton of risk involved and he is going to be looking for a big payday. I think if Capuano hadn't been hurt and Gallardo hadn't been hurt we'd have a pretty good rotation this year. Sheets, Gallardo, Capuano, Villanueva, Suppan with Bush/Parra to fill in for whoever struggles. The fact we lost 2 pitchers for the season by May 5th is what is making the rotation look bad, not Doug Melvin. Almost any team in baseball looks bad when you take out 2 starters, especially when one is the 2nd best starter on the team.
  12. With a pitcher on the mound who is struggling to find the strike zone I think the squeeze was a terrible call. (edit: nested quote --1992)
  13. I would hope that we make some moves to shore up the defense somewhere. Young pitching is hard enough to develop but when you put a below average defense on the field it just makes it that much harder. I have no clue what those moves would be though. Hardy is adequate at SS, Hall could become average at 3B with experience. Fielder and Weeks will probably always be below average. Hart is adequate though his arm is too weak for RF in my opinion. LaPorta isn't supposed to be anything special in the field. Braun I think will turn out to be an above average LF/RF type given time.
  14. Assuming we dont' make the playoffs this year I'd rather see the team just tank completely to get rid of Yost. It would be painful to watch but in the long run I think it would be a big improvement for 2009.
  15. He is saying they will be better than Dave Bush, doesn't take too much confidence that one young guy will step up and beat out Bush.
  16. Scratch that Shouse comment actually, forgot Ludwick was in there now.
  17. I'd have gone with Shouse to face the lefties.
  18. I cannot imagine this game not ending with a game winning RBI by Pujols... unless Miles drives it in of course.
  19. Has Gagne pitched a clean inning yet this year? The squeeze is a bad play regardless, the guy just gave up 2 BB to load the bases, you don't mess around hoping you get a pitch you can bunt.
  20. Well if there was a sign that said suicide squeeze and someone missed it I'm pissed at Yost because it was a stupid idea to begin with. If Hall just mistook the sign and ran on his own then at least I'm only mad at one person.
  21. I don't think Brewer fans would be happy with Yost if this is how he ran his bullpen in the 7th.
  22. I think we score 1 run in the 7th but leave a couple stranded.
  23. Before today Hardy had hit .310 with a .429 OBP and a .739 OPS since the start of the Cubs series. I don't mind him sitting down for a day but he really isn't struggling that much lately.
