  1. And then he'll get injured trying to put their shoes on.
  2. Madson just got traded to the Dodgers. Might mean the Nats bullpen is one arm short tonight.
  3. Well Green was a platoon guy in his early years which suppressed his stats and a lot of rumors point to him being a steroids guy which drove his huge short lived breakout. It makes his comp a bit difficult.
  4. It is just as wrong when you say it like this. Losing to the bad teams and beating the good teams works just as well as beating the bad teams and losing to the good teams. The only series that matters more than any others is the head to head one because the games technically count twice. If we had lost 2 of 3 to the Reds it would have changed our playoff odds slightly but not by much at all. No more than losing 2 of 3 to the Nationals would.
  5. Yeah it really is amazing. I think everyone knew that Anderson would regress but most hoped it wouldn't regress as much as he has. We all hoped that Jimmy would give us half a season but he gave us nothing. We hoped that Davies would find it before June and give a decent season but he just got hurt. We all assumed some young guy would give us half a season of not terrible stats and that happened with Peralta. The last spots were reclamation guys that we hoped 1 or 2 would work out and for the most part they have all worked out and even carried the load.
  6. Yeah I don't really hold out any hope for catching the Cubs. I'll be doing my scoreboard watching with an eye towards the wild card, not the division. Though I still can't actively cheer for the Cubs or Cardinals~.
  7. I will do the opposite of eating crow though I didn't think he would be this good. Looking at his actual stats looks like a lot of this is smoke and mirrors. He has pitched like a low to mid 4 ERA pitcher and just got good results. viewtopic.php?f=63&t=36398&p=1093445&hilit=Miley#p1093445
  8. The intercostal issue was never going to go away so I'm sure he signed it for health reasons more than anything else.
  9. I don't even think that is a big deal by itself as the Reds have a decent offense just no pitching. It is the fact they came off of a series where they looked worthless offensively that makes it so painful. It really makes our pitching look bad to see the contrast in results.
  10. Let me just add I do not believe Braun was innocent. This is completely an argument about whether the system failed along the way to deciding he was guilty in the initial finding. I think the system was a complete failure at multiple points with the initial findings.
  11. They're not my only assessment tool. Clutch hitting starts with hitting safely in high pressure situations. You can look beyond that one metric all you want. In situations where his team was behind, Shaw failed to hit safely in 8 out of 10 at bats. That's terrible. Seriously man, this is an awful way to try to justify your opinion. Trying to equate some type of useful meaning to 72 PA of baseball is terrible, as someone else mentioned his tOPS+ suggests he has actually been above average even with this small sample. You are completely misrepresenting the meaning of statistics with this post. The stat you posted doesn't tell the story you are trying to make it tell in the first place and the reliability of the stat is too low to matter in the big picture. The stat itself isn't even the proper one to measure what you are trying to measure.
  12. Sure that is better, but I would say that the sample of Shaw in 2018 isn't meaningful. What Shaw has done in a super small subset of PA this season just has no real meaning. He easily could have hit the ball extremely hard overall and it was just at other players and turned into outs. He could have made super weak contact and it happened to find holes. Trying to judge a player on anything over such a small sample just has no real meaning in the big picture of baseball.
  13. I just see this game as a total coin flip at this point. That isn't a good thing either considering how much more talented our entire roster is, the longer this game goes the more the advantage should be to the Brewers but it really just doesn't feel like that.
  14. 1 season clutch stats are worthless because the sample is too small. For his career Shaw has a 134 tOPS+ in high leverage situations. He has been about as clutch as a player can be. Even that is only 387 PA though so might not be meaningful, but his actual stats in those situations do not support not being clutch.
  15. I don't see any reason to question Hader's durability as a starter. It is all about the pitch mix. He needs a third pitch and he has been put in a situation where developing it is almost impossible to do. So they either have to make him a starter and just pray it develops or keep him a RP and assume it never will. There isn't a really comfortable middle ground.
  16. That pitch illustrates the luck of baseball, 94 right down the middle, easy game losing pitch and Scooter swings through it. It isn't always about whether you do your job or not, so much of it is out of any single players control.
  17. and responding with: Mike Marshall Marshall threw in an era where you only had to throw max effort with about 50% of your pitches instead of almost every pitch. Also an era where most hitters were focused on putting the ball in play if they could rather than extending at bats. The game is just completely different now.
  18. I don't see any chance Hader becomes a starter, he just doesn't have a starters arsenal at all. He would have to develop a new pitch and he hasn't shown any progress towards doing it. Part of that is probably due to his role and how high leverage his innings are meaning he can't try to develop it, but I just don't see it.
  19. Jared Hughes is up in the bullpen for the Reds. If we can get out of this jam we should have the lead going into the bottom of the 8th.
  20. Jody Gerut at least had a couple of good seasons. His rookie year made him look like an up and coming star but it just never worked out for him.
  21. He did not send it out the day he should have, he did not store it properly, he waited longer than he should have to ship it on Monday. This guy blew it at every chance. That is why the arbitration was won.
  22. This is true until there are about 10 games left and realistically it is more like 5 games in which case you start to come into scenarios where even if you play perfect you may not be able to pass the other team. I agree that all this loss column talk is meaningless this far out. I said it above and I'll say it again, the teams record over a 30 game sample is just going to be random. We are likely to win 10, lose 10 and do something with the last 10. Trying to predict what is going to happen over those 10 games is just impossible. Sit back and enjoy the ride but don't stress out about it so much. We can play well and still end up missing the playoffs, we can play poorly and still back into the playoffs. The nature of small sample baseball just makes a month worth of games pretty random.
