  1. The guy who handled the sample broke protocol and the sample should have never been tested. It should have been thrown out the day it reached the testing facilities. To make matters worse the failed test was leaked to the public. Braun was wrong in using the product but everyone involved in this process was wrong as well. This process failed at every single step. Don't sit here and pretend Braun is at fault for other people failing to do their jobs properly.
  2. We are 18-15 since the all star break. I don't know how to find that split exactly but just looking at past 30 games we are 11th in W/L record. We have not been one of the worst records since the ASG, people seem to think we are in a total collapse but we have played just about as well since the all star break as we did before it. That 1-8 stretch right before the break derailed things, post ASG hasn't at all.
  3. He only has 1.5 reliable pitches and tends to pitch poorly once runners get on. I'm not sure if that makes for a good RP or not. Its hard to know if the first inning thing is real or not as it is only 13 IP. His 4th inning has probably been worse than his 1st inning, it feels more like noise. I could see using him in a big game and just taking him out as soon as anyone reaches base. He really needs to learn how to pitch out of the stretch.
  4. Which is exactly what he should have done. Last year's team had no shot of going deep into the playoffs and this one probably doesn't either. It would be nice to make the wild card but making some huge move aimed at 2018 would have been a mistake, not a sign of a good GM. I almost feel like he did too much this deadline.
  5. Play with playoff hopes in September, stretch out some younger players to get them ready for full season MLB baseball and get them some experience. That would be the goals to me and what I would consider success. I think we will reach those.
  6. That chart actually weighs the player value into the days missed. If those injuries hadn't happened or happened to lesser players the Cubs would be the healthiest team in baseball by a wide margin. The Cubs have been lucky with injuries compared to most teams this season. The Angels have basically had their entire roster hit the DL. The Brewers have missed over 50% of the teams starts to the DL this year, had all 4 starting OF's end up on the DL, had most of the bullpen end up on the DL at one point or another. Lost their starting C and both backup catchers. Right before the all star break they had 10 players on the DL at the same time and that is when they had the 1-7 stretch that gave up their lead. That is what most teams are going through, the Cubs may have lost a few key guys but overall they have been extremely healthy.
  7. Any sample you use that includes the 1-8 stetch is probably going to make things look worse than they are. From the end of that streak until today they are 18-14 for a .562. Before that stretch they were at like a .590 and fell down to a .555. The .560ish winning percentage is probably pretty honestly earned without trying to break it up.
  8. Yep Theo is perfect. He didn't pay an OF about 3 times what he was worth and he didn't trade for a pitcher who was in obvious decline a year ago. He also didn't sign damaged goods to a huge contract in the off season this year. He has put the Cubs in a great position and even won a World Series but he has done it by destroying the minor league system and that just isn't something a small market team can do. The first 3 years of Epstein with the Cubs they won 61, 66, 67 games during a rebiuld. The first 3 years of Stearns the Brewers won 73, 86 and 80 something also during a rebuild.
  9. Its called a good pitch mix and good defense. Pitching is so heavily a team stat and some teams just don't get it. Obviously he won't keep this up but I'm not surprised at all to see a pitcher improving a lot going from a team like the Rangers to one like the Cubs.
  10. Some team is going to have a rough finish and get called chokers, some team is going to finish hot and it will be because they were clutch or because some guy they traded for sparked the team. Some team will play fine and just barely miss it and people will point at a specific game or two as to why they failed etc. One month of baseball is basically random for the results, adding in all the call-ups just makes it even more random. Some stuff will happen, it ultimately isn't going to mean much and reporters are going to assign stories to it that really aren't true. Anything could happen over this small sample of games and nobody can predict what will actually happen. Sit back and enjoy it, hope the Brewers are one of the teams with the good results, but try not to put any meaning towards it because there is none.
  11. No ... without even thinking about more than a few seconds. Only if you are a pharmacist....didn't Marte get suspended for peds to start the year? That was last year.
  12. Yelich has been significantly better this year and is 3 years younger, so not at all. Marte is still really good though.
  13. Soria already pitched the 8th. Burnes and Lyles are the only pitchers left. Ok well it makes me look bad but it makes my point even more~.
  14. I guess my thought is what do you want them to do? The bullpen is gassed and fading because the rotation can't make it through the order a 3rd time so the RPs all have too many innings. I don't want to see Soria in his first game back from injury. I never want to see Lyles. So it is either Albers or Burnes and neither are great options in this situation.
  15. If they win this game they are 17-14 since the all star break. Pretty much the same as their seasonal win rate. If they lose I guess they are pretty average. The fact that one game changes things that much tells you all you need to know about what a 30 game sample means.
  16. How on earth did they not tag up on that drive to the wall with Cain's momentum going the wrong way. I don't care how slow the guy on 2nd is he should be on 3rd. All of this team is done stuff makes me feel so old, I just assume those posters are like 20 years old and new to baseball. Nobody who has watched baseball a long time says stuff like that. The game is just so sporadic that you cannot predict what is going to happen over a 30 game stretch regardless of what happened the last few games.
  17. Jeffress hung like 5 pitches middle middle that inning, lucky he kept the game tied.
  18. Down years are just baseball though. Every single team can point to 4 or 5 guys having bad years. If you had told me Arcia was going to have a sub .600 OPS, Knebel was going to be a disaster, Davis and Nelson were going to mostly miss the season, the team would get nothing out of C and 2B etc I could say the same exact things. This has just been the Cubs being the Cubs, not any sort of particularly down season for them. I doubt there is a single team in baseball that can't point to the same things you just did. Also a lot of the guys you mentioned may just be the players they are showing this year. Contreras still has a 2.8 WAR. Hendricks has put up these peripherals for a while now. Quintana has been getting worse every year for like 5 years now by peripherals. The Cubs, Pirates and Reds are just about where their talent suggests they should be accounting for normal player variance year to year. The Cardinals and Brewers have probably overperformed by a few games each.
  19. Stearns saying something isn't really evidence given how much GMs try to obfuscate the facts for other teams. Peralta threw 120 IP in 2017 so he is probably good for something like 150-160 IP this year. He is at 128 now with probably 6 stats left on the season. If he goes 5 IP per start that is 158 and in the range. It isn't until the playoffs where his IP gets heavily muddled if we make it.
  20. Hardly a disaster year, they have had a pretty average season for injuries. This site tracks how much each team has been hit by injuries and it lists the Brewers as the 8th most affected and the Cubs as one of the healthiest teams overall at 26th. https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-disabled-list-tracker/
  21. It is worth noting that outside of the games against the Cubs and the Cardinals every game we play the rest of the season is against a team that really isn't in the playoff hunt. Next closest team in the Nationals who seem to be giving up.
  22. Thanks for the suggestion, Ennder. It doesn't mean you won't ever see some of those people's posts (due to the fact you can quote them), but it can save a lot of angst to just ignore the troublesome people in your life. Just so people who haven't done it before know, it still shows that the person you blocked posted and all it takes is one click of your mouse to show their post if you really need to see it for some reason.
  23. Just imagine being an Angels fan where you have all the money in the world, have the best player in the game and keep signing high profile free agents and are still out of it every year before September. Try being a Nationals fan this season having as much talent as any other team in baseball and almost certainly missing the playoffs. Having a small market team that recently started a rebuild in the playoff hunt this time of year is a blessing. If we just barely miss the playoffs it really stinks and it definitely hurts the team but from a pure entertainment standpoint it is still great for us fans.
