  1. Roughly twice as meaningful. When you take an already too small sample and slice it up even more you are just making it less meaningful. I don't see how that isn't clear. Take Zach Davies this year, he has been horrible at Miller Park but if I had to put money on it I'd say it is just random sequencing because he's had a number of disaster starts and most of them happened to be at home. In 2016 he was much better at home. With pitching random sequencing is just going to happen.
  2. Have you looked at his home/road splits? I'm not sure going off of a 14 IP split is really going to be that meaningful. He has had 2 absolute disaster games and they both happened at home, who is to say one couldn't have happened on the road and this is just sequencing.
  3. BA always talks about changing the strike zone but as it's been pointed out to me that rule was never approved. The umps were told to call it tighter though I believe. The umps were being more generous than the rules on the low pitch in the past.
  4. I think Guerra was a fluke last year but make no mistake, this is not last years Guerra. This isn't the pitcher we should have expected. This is a guy that got hurt because of the stupid rules in the NL who is all out of whack still from the injury. If Guerra gets back to pitching like he did last year we can see if it was indeed a fluke or not. This isn't the same guy at all.
  5. His season last year looked really fluky so he probably is. Tonight he is grooving pitches right down the middle. He has no command.
  6. With the tiny samples of innings RP get in partial years you pretty much have to go 100% by peripherals ignore all else because it is just noise at this point. Barnes, Hughes and Drake have all shown major league viable peripherals, albeit pretty low end skills. Torres is a bit behind them but you stick with him due to his past most likely. Peralta has no business being in the majors pretty much. I'm not a big fan of Wang's but at least he keeps the walks down which means maybe he can find some sort of role on the team. Cravy's AAA peripherals are just awful, no thanks on him until he gets some control back.
  7. I'll go with 14-11 with Braun sparking the offense and Thames starting to hit again. Then in August we will see a complete collapse.
  8. Not sure Hader is a better prospect than Gallardo was. I fully agree they are messing with these prospects more than they need to this year though.
  9. They didn't make the playoffs but the 2009 Mariners are one of those teams. They lost 101 games in 2008, then won 85 in 2009. In the off season of 2009 they signed a bunch of big free agents and then lost 101 again in 2010. That was a 100 loss team in 2008 that somehow won 85.
  10. Peralta was always bad. Wolf was bad as well. I know this is an old comment but it simply is not a true comment. Randy Wolf was a pretty average pitcher. He had a positive WAR every year of his career until his final 2 seasons with the Marlins. His career ERA was 4.24 which is certainly not amazing but it isn't bad either. His first 2 seasons with the Brewers he was a definite positive to the team. He pitched poorly in 2012 and had TJ at the end of the year which is probably the main cause of his poor performance.
  11. I think we all assume at some point the Cubs will come alive and most likely pass us in the standings. I have been saying this for 2 months but that Rockies rotation is terrible, I'd say bottom 5 in the NL. That team is going to collapse and the wild card is going to be up for grabs. We are 6 games behind them now and all it takes is us playing a little better in the 2nd half and we should catch them and be able to fight for it. The Rockeis ERA in June is 5.13 and it honestly won't surprise me if it is 5+ the rest of the season. The wild card is most definitely still in play as a playoff option.
  12. I was at the game and all the people behind me could say was how embarrassing it was to lose to a team like the Brewers. I guess they haven't looked at the standings this year~. Good win, glad that was the game I got to go to this weekend.
  13. The stat cast version agrees with this, Brewers rank near the bottom. There stats include difficulty of catch etc so they are a bit better. Not sure where to find those numbers, I just listen to their podcast. Is it based on where the player's starting point is or is it assuming everyone is playing straight up? It is based on where he starts on the field so it can't take player positioning properly into account. It also doesn't account for dealing with the wall. It does however account for break on ball, foot speed, direction you had to run, route efficiency etc. It also doesn't account for arm strength at all, this one is simply built for catch difficulty. It shows that the top fielders in the game can make easy catches that someone like Adam Jones has to dive for or simply can't reach no matter what.
  14. It was a bad decision by Swanson but he pulled it off. I don't have a big issue with Thames running on that play either. There are so many ways that play can go bad for Atlanta many of which let Thames score.

  16. Not a surprise. Santana is awful. Broxton is above average as long as he doesn't have to pick the ball up off the ground. The combination of LF's we have replaced Braun with are awful too.
  17. It is more likely that Jansen has been the best closer in baseball than it is that Knebel has been better than him. Jansen's season is just crazy. At one point in June his FIP was negative.
  18. This is pretty much what I expected Counsell to do which is why I was so anti bringing up Brinson. Just a waste having him sit on the bench.
  19. A win is worth a half game and a loss is worth a half game. So if we have the same number of games and we have one more win than the Cubs they have one fewer than us. Which means they are 1 game behind us. If they go on to lose a game and we sit idle it moves to being 1.5 games back.
  20. It annoys me to no end when players don't run out strike 3 when it bounces away from the catcher. Make them throw the darn ball. It maybe even lets Sogard get to third.
  21. Wow, what a difference a year makes! From 5th worst to second best in MLB in outs on the bases. Villar hasn't been on base as often is probably the main change
  22. Keep in mind a year would mean he would be coming up around right now since it is past super 2. He'd be a more advanced hitter than he was last year even if he had done it at the minor league level and we'd have him for 1 more year during the next competitive stretch. I'm not saying he is doing a bad job, I'm just saying they rushed him up for no good reason. I hope that doesn't become a theme. As for his defense, that is one of those things you just have to wait and see the metrics on. Defense is probably the worst stat to use the eye test on. You are going to naturally gravitate towards the guys you see the most because you see all of their great plays and not just a great play here and there. Baseball reference has him as the top defensive SS on the year. Fangraphs has him in the top 5.
  23. Guerra's at least had nothing to do with the field. He was forced to run the bases which pitchers aren't used to doing and just came out of the box awkwardly. It is why the AL is better than the NL most years, the NL teams lose a chunk of their pitching to hitting and running the bases and they get to rest guys through the DH slot. This rule has to change one way or the other and soon. /rant off
  24. I just wish they had given him another season to learn how to hit in the minors. By the time his bat is finally ready to be a plus he'll be very close to arbitration. The last set of guys all came up a season too early, I don't want to see them make the same mistake this time around.
  25. Because if he can't go 2 innings he isn't worth rostering. The only way he is worth it next year at his price tag is if he can consistently give you 2 innings to bridge low inning starts to the end of the game guys. I'm guessing Peralta gets DFA'd or just not used by September. He is a sunk cost at this point.
