  1. I'd guess he gets one start and then is kept as insurance in case Guerra has a short first outing.
  2. I guess I don't worry about Villar because he has over 1500 PA of perfectly acceptable offensive production for someone playing 2B. If he plays to his career averages he is a perfectly fine player. That is plenty of PA for me to say the guy has a track record. Plus looking at the stats a lot of this is just BABIP and BABIP happens. Some of it is elevated K but that was more of the case in April
  3. Money doesn't really matter outside of trade value, none of these guys really have any trade value so I don't think that matters. We know the defense is bad and it isn't the friendliest park so lets try to neutralize some of these small samples since ERA doesn't tell a true story until you have over a full season of results. Davies - 4.82 xFIP, career ERA-xFIP 0.15. Most likely Davies has pitched like a 5 ERA guy on the year. He has actually pitched worse in May than in April even though the ERA doesn't show it. He was so good for stretches of last year and is so young that I think we still give him a full season. He is the only guy we have now that I expect might be part of the next playoff Brewers team. Peralta - 4.74 xFIP career ERA-xFIP 0.20. Peralta has also pitched like a 5 ERA guy. He hasn't really shown any promise since 2014 and lefties simply kill him. He should be a middle reliever and I hope they move him to the pen soon or just cut bait if they don't want to do that. He is not a major league quality starter. Anderson - 4.41 xFIP career ERA-xFIP -0.08. Anderson looks like a mid 4 ERA guy. He is pitching like a back of the rotation type starter. Nothing great but better than the other options above him. I think he sticks in the rotation. Nelson - 4.22 xFIP career ERA-xFIP -0.02. Nelson is the best of this bunch this year. He also profiles like a back of the rotation type starter. Garza - 3.61 xFIP career ERA-xFIP -0.05. Garza looks for real so far. The sample is too small obviously but if he can keep this up he will actually bring something back in a trade mid season. This mostly matches up with what I expected. When Guerra comes back I would send Peralta down and move him to the bullpen. I think Davies is the youngest and has the most upside so you don't do anything to him. Trade Garza mid season to make room for a young arm to start learning the major leagues. Garza is pitching like a #3 starter. Anderson and Nelson like a 4 or 5. Peralta and Davies have been below replacement level. A pretty brutal rotation of guys just good enough to not want to just get rid of.
  4. Peralta should have been moved to the pen last year. It is long overdue
  5. Scooter is a truly terrible OF. I do not miss him at all from this team. He would be the 3rd best utility guy
  6. I thought I read at some point in time that double plays are as much or more an indication that your team is allowing a lot of base runners than an indicator of good defense. We have a good double play % as well which accounts for that.
  7. Yeah I would bat Broxton somewhere in the top 5 given how well he is hitting right now. They must think Broxton can't handle the pressure of batting towards the top or something.
  8. What everyone else said but in addition to that the Brewers lead all of baseball in extra base hit% against their pitchers. 40% of the hits given up by the team have been extra base hits which is a ton. 20% K rate 9.6% BB rate 9.7% extra base hits So we have a low K rate staff that walks too many, gives up a lot of extra base hits and has a bad defense. Not a good recipe. The one plus is we have induced a lot of double plays and have a good GB%. Going into the season I thought the pitching would be awful and then our "ace" went down. So the fact we have been above league average is a plus to me.
  9. There actually is merit in the notion of trading for Quintana. He is signed through 2020 with club options so he could be the teams ace while the young guys get worked into the rotation. I certainly wouldn't want them to trade for a rental but that is a guy that makes total sense to acquire.
  10. Prorate is stats to his PA from last year and he has 20 HR, 32 SB, 82 R, 85 RBI. So the rate stats are right in line with last year minus a few steals. His BB rate is right in line with last year. His ISO is higher than last year. He is roughly 7 singles away from matching last years overall numbers. BABIP this year is 50 pts below his career norms which is pretty much the difference. I hope people aren't worried about him anymore. He is never going to be good defensively and I hope we don't sign him as our long term 2B. I hope we get something juicy for him in trade though.
  11. Messing up their routine would hurt them way more than sitting on a big league bench and getting one start would help them. That is what September is for. There is a reason teams don't generally call up prospects for short stints unless they are contending, it is bad for the prospect. Cubs are calling up their top prospect Ian Happ to fill in for Russell and Bryant. As of today Cubs are a half game behind the Brewers. Because the Cubs have no in house replacement because they have so many guys banged up. That is a completely different situation. Happ may be up for good too as the Cubs are all in for winning right now and the Brewers are not. They aren't bringing Happ up to get him a taste of the majors, they are doing it to help win now.
  12. The fact that the roster is in this state with only Arcia brought up from the minors is simply amazing to me. I expected a couple 95 loss seasons before the young guys brought some hope.
  13. On mlb.tv I tend to watch the other teams stream because I think our whole crew is so bad. Unless we play the White Sox, then I'll turn the sound off~.
  14. Messing up their routine would hurt them way more than sitting on a big league bench and getting one start would help them. That is what September is for. There is a reason teams don't generally call up prospects for short stints unless they are contending, it is bad for the prospect.
  15. I didn't say they don't hurt, it just isn't as bad in the bullpen. The game is full of completely acceptable RP who walk too many guys but do everything else well. With a starter it is going to catch up to you too often as you get deeper into the game. Peralta's skills play as a RP, they simply don't as a SP unless he figures out the curve or change up and that just seems unlikely at this point.
  16. The statcast data for outfield catch probability has us 2nd worst in the league. Broxton grades out well but Santana is just terrible and I think Perez, Thames and Franklin probably drag it down some too.
  17. I watch most of the weekday games though sometimes it is streaming on my phone while I do other stuff. I'm usually busy on weekends so I watch fewer of those games. I don't record them if I'm going to miss them. My phone will tell me what is going on and I'll follow the game that way.
  18. Because he exactly fits the profile of starter turns into RP. Walks don't hurt as much as a RP, you can throw even harder and fastball+slider is a viable combo. Peralta screams bullpen guy with every single skill he shows. I don't know about closer since he can't get out lefties, but he would be so much better in the pen than as a starter. Guys with 2 pitches just don't do well as starters. OPS by time through lineup .725, .754, .818. OPS at 75+ pitches is .871. He doesn't have the stamina or arsenal to be a starter.
  19. There just isn't any reason to do it. We are not in trouble trying to cover OF with what we have right now. Getting a few major league AB in the middle of May is not going to somehow help any of these guys either. It is just jerking them around for no reason. This is why we kept captain Kirk so we don't have to mess with a guy who might actually be a major league player.
  20. You don't bring up a young guy to fill a bench spot and not get regular ABs for what is likely a short DL stint. I know people are chomping at the bit to see some prospects but it just doesn't make sense to interrupt their routine just to sit on a bench in the majors. The team has too many players when fully healthy and Counsell is struggling to get them all enough playing time. This is a chance to give them all enough playing time.
  21. Error. Grounder to Feliz, he threw to 2nd and Arcia dropped it. Good throw. The throw was high but it still should have been caught. Just popped out of Arcia's glove.
  22. They were used interchangeably until recent years when the actual control and command statistics were created. Control was defined as basically BB/9. Command was defined as basically K/BB. So statistically control is the ability to not walk people and command is the ability to strike out significantly more players than you walk. Control is the ability to put the ball in the strike zone, command is the ability to put the ball where you want it in my mind. If you aim for the outside corner and catch the middle of the plate you are still displaying control, but you are not displaying command.
  23. Peralta has no trade value imo, 3 straight years of a 4.80+ ERA is not getting anything. The only way to salvage any value from him is to turn him into a bullpen guy. I strongly feel Peralta is pitching for his starting career these next few starts. If he stinks he will be out of the rotation when Junior comes back and he will never see it again. He just can't get lefties out. It is bullpen or end of career for him unless he figures out his curve or change up as a meaningful pitch. What they should have done last year was put him in the minors and tell him he wasn't getting another shot until he has a change up. Make him throw it 20-30% of the time until he gets the hang of it. There was no reason to think he was going to improve without a change in pitch selection. He is at least showing a change and a curve this year but both are at 5%, they need to be a bigger part of the game especially against lefties.
  24. Kevin Mench always reminds me of the Carlos Lee trade, which had very little to do with Kevin Mench even though people insisted it was all about him. He was the throw in guy that didn't matter. It also reminds me of people saying Nelson Cruz was a 'throw in' which simply wasn't the case at all. The deal wasn't fair if you don't include Cruz. He was a key component for the Rangers. It also took steroids to make him useful after he cleared waivers once and was awful for a good 3 more years.
