  1. I do not mind this one. He is entering the wrong side of 30 with a skillset that I think will fade with age. That is a lot to pay.
  2. Weeks had a 2 year stint where he wasn't awful defensively. It didn't stick though unfortunately.
  3. Small windows for small markets..... look at KC. How sad is that? They built it the "right" way, and now after an extremely brief run they have to blow up the ship and trade off pieces. Sad for their fans. Sad that these teams, including us, that can't keep good home-grown teams together for longer periods of time. It's just sad that the disparity between bigs and smalls is so large. I'd like to see a MLB FA pool of shared money that is for teams to help specifically sign their own FA. Seems like that would be good for the game.... promote teams to keep their own..... build relationships in the neighborhood.... keep t-shirt names relevant. Also, sharing all tv $ has to be in the next CBA. KC had a group of prospects that never turned into what they hoped for. They had to mortgage the future to win a World Series and I'm sure their fanbase is happy with the result. That was never a team built for long term success. Has nothing to do with their payroll.
  4. Yeah he was 4 years younger and if you asked the Astros today if it was worth it they would probably say no since he didn't have a good year. Giles is the example of why you make this deal because it is so easy for a really good RP to get off to a bad start and kill his value. Giles had a couple bad months to start the season, otherwise he was his dominating self and regained the closer spot halfway through the year. Which was exactly my point. If Thornburg gets off to a bad start which is very easy to do, he kills his trade value. RP are way too volatile to expect them to repeat their previous season. The same reason I didn't mind trading Khris Davis when we did. He is such a streaky player that it is very easy for him to ruin his trade value by starting slow.

  6. Boston had a losing record 3 of the past 4 years as they went through a mini rebuild. Cubs had 5 straight losing years while they did a rebuild. Now these teams are the buyers in the market. That is just how baseball works. This has very little to do with payroll fairness. Also if you think the other sports are 'fair' because of salary caps you really do not understand the economics of sports. It is harder to turn around an NFL franchise that is losing than an MLB one. Basketball is just more random since hitting big on just 1 or 2 players is all you need.
  7. I don't really care who wins these things but there should be a system in place to remove idiots like this who left Verlander off the ballot. Same as anyone who didn't vote for Maddux for HOF should just lose their vote because they are worthless at voting.
  8. To be honest 154 game schedule is awful, it should be more like 124 games. The game is way too bloated in games played. Either they will stick with 162 or they will make an actual meaningful change and go somewhere under 140.
  9. pace of play is a big issue in all the major sports so this isn't a baseball thing. Football games are terrible at this point, that is why the ratings are totally tanking, the NBA is almost unwatchable outside of playoffs, the pace of Soccer is abysmal. Hockey is very solid in pace but just not that popular. This is a sports needs to fix it issue more than a baseball has a problem.
  10. Kirk is above replacement level in OF so not really sure why we would be in a hurry to dump him. There are a lot worse options for a 5th OF out there.
  11. I agree with you in general but that go Cubs go song is not catchy at all, it is just an awful song. Roll out the Barrel is catchy even if it is dumb. Go Cubs Go is just dull and lifeless. Same thing with the Red Sox song that is so popular, it is just an awful piece of music.
  12. Oh I think the Cubs losing would have been a much much better script and it isn't even close. We would get to see all of this play out again next year as they should be in heavy contention. Also the Indians are actually a better team as they played the Cubs this close while missing 3 of their top 5 players so a rematch is very plausible. This outcome is good for baseball but the Cubs losing would have been even better as long as they eventually did win.
  13. To be honest I don't know anyone that watches shows live with commercials anymore. If I want to watch a show at 7 PM regardless of what it is, I DVR it and start watching at 7:20 to skip the commercials as does everyone else I know. Cut out at least 16 games and more likely 20-30 games. 2 strikes for strike out, 3 balls for walk. RP has to face at minimum 2 batters. Pace of play largely falls in line and all older baseball fans freak out.
  14. If I were Cuban born player I'd imagine I'd prefer to live in Miami as well, has nothing to do with the drugs. Having said that I think this is a little bit less of a tragedy given the circumstances. Someone died way too young and it is awful but the fact they put themselves in a bad situation to make it happen is a lot different than it being a complete random accident.
  15. What probably needs to be done is 3 balls for a walk, 2 strikes for a strike out. It is too radical to ever actually happen though, especially considering the rich statistical history of the game that makes it really hard to make huge changes like that.
  16. Of course it is. If you take on some of the contract every single contract in baseball is trade-able.
  17. This is patently false. The museums are downtown, the Arch is downtown, the brewery is downtown etc. Everything that is "worth" visiting is downtown. If you are visiting St Louis you are most likely downtown. Miller Park is not a tourist area outside of the stadium.
  18. This is downtown St Louis and within walking distance of their biggest tourist draw. It wouldn't make any kind of sense to do this kind of thing near Miller Park. It is definitely a tradeoff too. We visited to go to a game and arrived the night before and the traffic was insane due to the game. Just getting to our hotel took forever.
  19. I prefer a completely standardized strike zone that does not change game to game. I assume this means I prefer the robot ump. Pitchers adjusting to the days umps strike zone just means a flaw in the system in my mind. I can't speak to whether machines can call strikes better than a human just yet, but if they can get it working to the point where it is clearly the case I totally embrace the change.
  20. Baseball has the most parity of any of the major sports is the big reason. People seem to believe this isn't true just because it has no salary cap but it has been proven time and time again.
  21. Both leagues will have DH within 10 years, it is more or less a given. Too many pitchers getting hurt hitting and running the bases and too unfair having the leagues different now that interleague is such a big part of the game.
  22. Even if they shared revenue completely on all levels you would have players going to big markets for endorsement deals and avoiding Milwaukee because it isn't considered a good social/weather destination. I don't know why people think the salary cap works in football but it really doesn't. Teams that have a history of being good, that are big markets or that are popular have huge advantages over other teams that are considered poor destinations. The same teams are in the running for the playoffs every year barring injuries. The Brewers would not improve their lot in life with a salary cap. They would have to overpay to get players to come play for them and would be like the Packers and be forced to build almost exclusively through the draft, just like how it is now. But with the minor league system the way it is I don't know how a salary cap could possibly work in the first place.
  23. But this is very rare. There is almost always 1 or 2 low end payroll teams in the playoffs.
  24. This wouldn't work at all, in fact it would hurt the Brewers. It is the only sport with a real minor league system which makes the idea not tenable regardless.
  25. Teams over pay for HR, just look at how mediocre Khris Davis is yet some people think he is some hot commodity just because of HR and batting cleanup so he gets RBI even though he is heavily flawed everywhere else. Carter is probably worth keeping and selling to some team mid season who has a big injury at 1B.
