  1. They usually call up a few guys just so they get the feel of being on the major league team even if they aren't going to play much. Guys who might be in the mix mid to late next year so some of the jitters get worked out before the real callup.
  2. Starting Pina over Maldonado seems like a poor move. The team has more wins than I expected to the point I'm worried we won't get a top end draft pick at this point. Maldondado has the best BB rate of his career, lowest K rate in the past 4 season, better ISO than recent years in general, he is popping out less than normal, hitting more HR/FB than normal, has cut down in soft contact etc. In almost every way other than BABIP related features he has improved as a hitter significantly this year.
  3. One partial year of pitching data is so unreliable that I don't think you can draw any conclusions about any player much less draw any sort of conclusions about a pitching coach.
  4. Frustrating that for such a powerhouse 1-2 combo that Brewers have a NLCS appearance and wild card appearance as only thing to show for it. They played 4 full seasons together. 2 playoff's is hardly some sort of tragedy. Yeah the team stunk it up in the playoffs but both of those seasons they had world series capable rosters, it just didn't happen. Yount and Molitor played 13 full seasons together and made the playoffs 2 times together and they are both in the HOF, that is the tragedy.
  5. Moving to a team that was going to put him at 1B and DH would be idiotic, he made the right choice here for his future career.
  6. There is a difference between picking a guy just because he plays 1B and looking at players you value about equally and choosing one because he plays 1B. If say it comes down to Guzman or Taveras or Cordell and they value them about the same I see nothing at all wrong with going with the position of need at that point.
  7. In 41 IP at AAA he has given up 55 hits and 31 runs. That is really hard to do. I think it is time to try the bullpen for him.
  8. His peripheral stats are so weird and erratic it is really hard to know what he is ever going to be.
  9. Nelson Cruz was never a big deal imo. It took him years to be good, when he finally got good it was only at home in that park of theirs and at some point in there he started using PEDs. He only ever had 1 really good year for the Rangers and most of his major success was for another team after his service time was over. Note that I wasn't just talking about the performance of the respective players...I'm also talking about fans bringing these trades up as mistakes, years after the fact. Sure. But if that is the worst trade you can bring up about a GM you have had a very good run as a GM. That trade was not some sort of disaster like people always try to make it out to be.

He only ever had 1 really good year for the Rangers and most of his major success was for another team after his service time was over. Cruz has put up his 3rd and 4th highest single season OPS playing in Seattle. I don't think the park really made a difference. Neither season of which was ever going to be for the Brewers. Only the Ranger's years count as part of the trade.

  12. Khris Davis was never going to bring any value to a team in a rebuild directly so what replaced him in WAR is completely meaningless. The question with Davis is always going to be would we have gotten more for him if we had waited and traded him at the deadline or after this year. I think we probably would have as he is having a decent year.
  13. Yeah I think Mendez is the primary target but if something goes wrong with him and they get scared they will fall back on Guzman which would finally give us a big hitting 1B in the system.
  14. I fully buy into the playoffs being a complete crapshoot. The best teams in baseball rarely face off in the World Series these days, it is just the teams that went on a run at the right time.
  15. Heyman is not a viable source of information when it comes to talent so who cares what he says. Getting a top farm system is not hard though, it is keeping a top system while putting talent into the majors that is tough. This is nice to see but it isn't a huge deal either.
  16. Looking over the current 40 man roster and DL, I'd be surprised if 6 players on that list are a part of the next competitive Brewers team. It might only be 2 or 3.
  17. Pirates have been successful because of a lot of pitching acquired outside of their system that panned out. Liriano, Burnett, Happ, Volquez, Worley etc. These are all pitchers who had a lot of recent failure that suddenly saw revivals in Pit. I don't know if it is because of their pitching coach, defense or just some dumb luck though. But that team has heavily been carried in recent years by mediocre pitching turned good.
  18. Considering he is pretty poor defensively I'd think the utility role would be more valuable for this specific player.
  19. Royals and Pirates are two of my least favorite teams, something must be wrong with me .
  20. I don't like just about anything about Arcia offensively. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see him becoming a plus with the bat. All his value will need to come from the glove.
  21. Going to have to agree here. Other than Escobar the only other SS that I have seen play who is better than them all is Andrelton Simmons. The only other player who came close in the 90's that I got to see was Omar Vizquel. I think both Simmons and Escobar defensively are better than Vizquel was in terms of making wow plays. Adam Everett was the best defensive SS to play the game in the past 15 years and Escobar isn't anywhere close to as good as he was. He was better than Vizquel as well. Simmons might compare but hasn't been around long enough to judge yet.
  22. Maldonado strikes me as one of those guys who might just suddenly figure out how to hit in their late 20s like a Carlos Ruiz or Yadier Molina. While it looks like his stats are just as bad this year he has some sneaky improvements in there. His BB rate is up significantly, his K% is down, he is elevating the ball more often and popping out less and he is using all fields instead of being pull heavy. His .207 average is more due to a BABIP 40 points lower than his career rate. It can be hard to see in just his rate stats but there is some improvement going on this season.
  23. C is likely to be Susac and some FA would be my guess. I don't think Perez is going to stick at 3B for that long. 2018 could be the year we start to think about winning more than about the future, but we won't be a contender that fast. 2018 is a huge year for free agents as well with one of the better classes in recent history, I wonder if we sign a few guys since we will have a lot of free money for a few years in there.
  24. Lucroy and Jeffress would not have commanded this package in the offseason. Lucroy's value completely tanks after the deadline. I don't blame Stearns at all for pushing this through.
