  1. Pretty sad that Canada's best starter was Ryan Dempster who didn't pitch at all last year. He did better than I expected though. Apparently Gagne is on the team as well.
  2. Maybe I'll have to change my profile picture from Davis to Broxton~.
  3. That is one of the better US teams I've seen on paper at least, even if it is a bit on the young upside side.
  4. I have never seen anything in his bat that suggests it will bring value and that includes the minor leagues. His batting eye isn't great, his power is pretty average for a SS, he isn't all that fast. On the other hand he has been young for every level and he hasn't failed at any of them so there is plenty of reason to believe that more will come. There just isn't any proof that it will. It is very plausible he turns into a 35 doubles, 12 HR type guy with a decent average and great defense. That has a ton of value at SS.
  5. The starters were 17th in ERA, 24th in FIP, 24th in xFIP, 20th in WAR, 28th in K/BB. There's not a single thing they were even average in last year. And I don't think those FIP and xFIP numbers are the outliers. A number of pitchers had better ERA's than their actually peripherals suggested they should have. I also think the bullpen will be worse this year than last year.
  6. It is probably too early to bring up the young starters and the reality is most young starters struggle at least most of their first season unless they are super ace type pitchers. The pitching on this team is going to hold them back this year. Stick a league average rotation on this offense and we can talk playoffs as a possibility. Even if a lot of the offense might not be the long term solutions they have talent all over it.
  7. I think a lot of people are giving up on Santana and I'm not sure why? He played very well off of an injury last year and is young, very young. His exit velo is one of the tops in the league. Sorry I didn't mean that to sound like I'm giving up on him. Average isn't a bad thing. Corey Hart was average most of his career. Just if Brinson forces his way onto the team and Braun is still around I expect he is forcing his playing time away from Santana and not Broxton.
  8. Anderson seems to be a 4+ ERA type. Guerra most likely is a 4+ ERA type with a lucky year. Garza is likely a 4+ ERA type. Peralta is awful. Jimmy Nelson seems to be a 4+ ERA type. Zach Davies can't do it all himself. The rotation is terrible and will stop this team from being any good. If Broxton becomes the stud we all think he can become it just means Santana loses a job as he is a very average player in the OF and is easily replaced by Brinson. Not to mention Braun is likely on the way out.
  9. No it isn't. April is already a "useless month" because so many players just aren't ready yet. As someone with a long history in fantasy I know that April stats mean nothing just like September stats. Those months are heavy influenced by players who shouldn't be in the majors or players who just aren't ready to be playing yet. The players may feel it is too long and what they feel is probably the most important thing but early season always sees good players who just aren't ready yet for whatever reason struggling heavily.
  10. There was pretty clearly something wrong with him even before we traded him. It is odd they can't figure out what it is.
  11. I don't know how other teams do it but on Thursday we were looking for tickets for the Brewers @ Braves series and single tickets still weren't on sale yet. So the Brewers aren't behind some teams on doing that part.
  12. Carlos Zambrano was one of the biggest tools to ever play the game. These current Cubs are pretty likable though. Not sure this discussion belongs in the prediction thread though. :P
  13. Brewers Record: 71-91 Playoffs: No Brewers MVP: Arcia but not with very good offensive numbers. Brewers CY Young: Davies Brewers ROY: Someone in the bullpen First player traded: Braun Surprise player: Thames Disappointing player: Guerra - if I've ever seen a year that screams fluke it is his. I expect closer to a 5 ERA than a 3. World Series: Indians over Dodgers
  14. Keep in mind I also don't think they should play extra innings in the regular season in any sport. You had a full game to decide things, score it a tie and move on. Regular season is 162 games, a few ties aren't the end of the world. But if we have to do extra innings I want a system in place that makes sure it doesn't damage the teams too much. If the leagues are really about player safety like they keep saying then it seems like a simple change that would help the player safety by not making them play when gassed. (especially in football). I also don't think fundamentally changing the game is a good excuse for not doing something. Things evolve over time. Football wasn't made to be played in pads. Baseball wasn't supposed to have a wall to stop the ball so if you got a grounder past an OF it was usually a home run. The fielders didn't used to use gloves. The entire sport of baseball used to be about the batter vs the fielder with the pitcher being a background piece etc. These games are already completely different than when they were designed. So not wanting to change the game is not a valid argument against anything.
  15. I would rather it end that way than because one team ran out of players to use. The game is built for 9 innings, when you get to 14+ innings you aren't really playing the game the way it was meant to be played anyway. Playing an extra 1/3 of a game is enough, after that you are getting into unsafe/poor play.
  16. Out of 162 games last yeae, the Brewers played 13 extra inning games. Of those 13, 2 of them went past the 12th. Not one went past the 13th. Is this really that urgent of a problem that requires dramatic changes? On the flip side is this such a drastic change that it really modifies the game if it only happens rarely? Really long extra inning games are a huge issue when they do happen, curtailing them and nothing else is not a problem here. If you have a solution that doesn't impact 98% of games but impacts 2% of games that are really large issues then yeah that is a good thing.
  17. The intentional walk change is a no brainer imo. The strike zone is a good thing as it will force pitchers away from sliders which are only effect when they are really low. Slider is an arm killing pitch and part of why the 1 IP RP is so difficult to deal with. I like the extra inning rule too but not in the 10th inning. Add that starting in say the 12th or 13th and you have a good idea. Those really long extra inning games are just bullpen killers. They wear out a bullpen for a week+ sometimes. It is also a safety issue adding an extra hour+ to the game. I would also personally endorse the game just ending in a tie if it is still tied after 12 innings. You played an extra 1/3 of a game at that point just call it over.
  18. I thought the same thing. Nate silver seems like a place to start an inquiry. He's a baseball guy who pretty much started the aggregate polling trend in politics. I haven't gone there for a while but Nate Silver's 538 website used to have a place to suggest topics of inquiry and I know they had a sports section. This seems like something right up their ally. I don't know if you knew this but Nate Silver actually created PECOTA. He might not be the least biased guy out there to test this. It is also a really hard thing to track. You can nail a players WAR perfectly but come about it from completely different stats than you expected. That isn't really a win for your system. Projections are also a wide range of predictions turned into an aggregate. So you can be 'wrong' yet still be right very easily.
  19. A win is worth something like 7.5 million dollars. He is roughly a 1 WAR player. His contract is really low compared to what he has done in recent years. He shouldn't get a huge contract but it should likely have been bigger than this.
  20. I think PECOTA struggles to give proper credit to bullpens. That is why it fails on teams like the Royals and Orioles so consistently.
  21. Good for him. That park may rob a few of his HRs though since he hits so few to the right field porch.
  22. Given the payroll consideration of the team these next 3 years this is a complete non factor. The Brewers will not be hurt financially in any way by that deal. It is a pure upside move with the downside being losing some money that won't hurt the rebuild.
  23. If you really believe in Villar you try to get him signed now because if he repeats what he did last year he prices out of the organization most likely. Though if he repeats what he did last year you probably just trade him at the deadline this year and get a haul. Hader is just too young to do it just yet. If you want to sign him long term you make sure he has success and health for a big chunk of this year first.
  24. I don't think anyone is trading for Gennett as their full time 2B while Utley is sitting out there a FA. Once he signs maybe the market opens up some.
  25. I'm not a fan of this simply because it gives the Astros too much. I'm fine with a heavy penalty for the Cardinals but why should it be a big payoff for the Astros. 28 teams outside of the Cardinals were at a competitive disadvantage against them. 1 team was at a competitive advantage against the Astros and that was the Cardinals. The Astros get a huge bonus this year because 1 team had an advantage over them but it seems like 28 other teams get screwed by the Astros getting extra picks. There is no reason the teams in their division should fall behind the Astros because of this event and they just did.
