  1. I agree with a lot of this but not the Yost part. Yost would make moves that aren't just head scratching but if you gave me a list of 5 plausible moves you could make and asked me to rank them he'd still pick #6 which is so outrageously bad that I never even considered it. Things like bringing in a guy we are using as a LOOGY to face a RHB etc. I will generally be pretty lenient with manager moves because we rarely know the full story and most moves are pretty razor thin when it comes to right or wrong, but Yost consistently made moves that I thought were the only clearly wrong move you could make.
  2. Oh yeah that does bring back to mind how awful Macha was at baserunning. Yes running into outs is awful but just never running at all when you have a relatively fast team is just as bad. You need to find the proper balance.
  3. If he handled McGehee incorrectly it was not sitting him 3 or 4 more times than he did, otherwise he handled him exactly like every other manager handles struggling guys who go on little hot streaks and look like they are breaking out of it. We didn't have a backup to Yuni B. Most of what you are complaining about are roster construction issues, not management ones. I mean if they fire Roenicke it isn't going to bother me because he is about as vanilla a manager as you will find so is completely replaceable, but most of the complaints about him seem to be people not really trying to understand the thought process of managing a baseball team. I remember the one time he was starting Kotsay in CF and everyone flipped out and it turned out we had 2 players hurt so we had basically nobody else left, people tend to forget about the details. Macha was a decent on the field manager, that is not what I'm saying. I've only once seen a manager lose his team to a greater extent than Macha did while he was here and that was Bobby V last year with the Red Sox. As for setting the lineup etc, nothing Roenicke has done is any worse than how Macha handled Gamel.
  4. I can't stress enough that the early drafts were all about hitting. It was about rebuilding the fanbase which was awful at the time and the fastest and easiest way to do that is to draft hitting. We did it at the expense of pitching and the expense of defense. We then pushed up said hitters at least half a season if not a full season too fast which hurt the long term value of them. Maybe not the wisest on the field baseball decision but it was a pretty important financial decision for a team that wanted a new stadium and a new owner.
  5. I wouldn't say it is even very close, Macha was awful. There is a reason his name is never even mentioned when teams are thinking of a new manager and it is because he can't manage players.
  6. There are two big flaws before you even talk about the pitchers themselves, we pitch in a hitters park and we for most of the Melvin years we have put bad defenses on the field. We took a hitting first drafting philosophy while rebuilding the team and Jack Z was awful at drafting pitching in general. We'll have to see how this next wave does before I can judge the more recent drafts but we drafted pretty pitcher heavy so I'd hope 2 or 3 of them make the rotation.
  7. Roenicke is a really average manager. Macha was a completely tool when it came to the actual managing of players, there is more to the job than the on field part and he completely failed at the rest of it. Yost was just awful at the in game part. Roenicke is easily the best overall manager we have had in the Braun era.
  8. Pretty sure if someone just yelled at these guys they could beat the Cardinals. But yeah Axford should probably be sent down to work through his issues so he can see regular playing time reps.
  9. I'm not missing anything, Miller did not pitch a good game last night is all I'm saying, we let him off the hook time after time after time. That is the first game I've seen him pitch, not going to judge the guy off of one game but if he pitches like he did last night every game he is not going to be an ace that is for sure.
  10. Yeah I have not been impressed by Miller at all for this game at least, this seems to be a case of the Cardinals just holding over on us and us finding ways to lose the game more than anything. We just seem completely snake bit against them and not unlike the Packers vs Cowboys/49ers back in the early Favre days we need to learn how to compete with the Cardinals or we won't ever take that final step imo.
  11. That last pitch to Segura that was called a ball was more or less exactly where that Lohse pitch was, hit the outside corner but just barely and was called a ball.
  12. He isn't, for as much as they talked about it and said it was due to Molina etc the pitch by Miller had the entire ball on the plate and the pitch by Lohse just nicked the corner. Millers caught a ton more of the plate. Playing the Cardinals stinks, it seems like we just completely forget how to hit every single time and every little ball they hit seems to find some goofy hole somewhere. At least our bullying of the Pirates seems to be us nailing the ball, not just getting 10 flair hits every game.
  13. Every team steals signs if they can.
  14. The hitting coach definitely matters, it is pretty much impossible to tell how much good or bad he is doing and whatever he is doing it is going to work differently for each player.
  15. No but this is exactly how ESPN is trying to spin the Braun appeal when for all we know it was more like they had DNA evidence but it wasn't handled properly so it was inconclusive. Multiple sources have said they were able to recreate false positives by not storing samples properly and we know for a fact that the samples weren't stored properly. That isn't getting off on a technicality that is getting off because the only proof they had was tainted. Gun to my head I'm going to assume he is guilty because of the Miami connection and the fact a lot of players use, I just think the way the media has handled the 'facts' of this case is criminal and slanderous.
  16. Betancourt's plate discipline hasn't changed, his batted ball data hasn't really changed, the only real change in his game is his HR/FB% that I can find. That is almost never sustainable, it is just a fluke. If there was any other stat I could find that supports this I might buy him at 2B but there just isn't anything. He happened to hit a bunch of balls over the wall but nothing else has changed. Every April a few guys hit a bunch of extra HR because pitchers are hanging pitches all over the place, this year one of them happened to be Yuni.
  17. Sounds more like a guy who has been drilled on what to say to the media more than being unselfish to be honest. He does not strike me as one of the more humble guys on the team.
  18. Hitting guys on purpose because you made a bad pitch and gave up a HR is just so dumb.
  19. Can I change my pick to 28-0?
  20. I used to make that same play back in little league when the nose picker was playing 2B and I didn't think I could trust him to catch a flip, glad Segura has figured out not to feed Weeks double play balls~.
  21. To really put this in context you would have to put the money earned into it etc. I didn't like the trade at the time but given how we were able to trade for Greinke and then get Segura I think we did a decent job of getting good value out of our SS position over the past few years, even if it meant watching Yuni for so long!
  22. I agree with this completely, it doesn't change the point that ESPN has a pretty clear agenda when they are reporting the news. It isn't about wanting to change peoples opinion about Braun, it is about disliking ESPN and this just being another in a long line of reasons for it. Mainstream media in general is like this so I guess I shouldn't expect ESPN to be any different. There are plenty of reasons to doubt that Braun used steroids only we never get to see those in mainstream media, you have to go online and find things like Will Carrol's report etc to get it.
  23. There just isn't a way to attach a value to pitchers. FIP certainly doesn't do a good enough job of 'stripping out defense' and things like BABIP, LOB%, HR/FB stabilize to a pitchers norm, not some baseline. If you just use ERA then you end up counting defense twice, once for the fielders and once for the pitcher etc. Park factors are completely flawed since they treat every hitter the same way. I don't know the answer to how to do pitching WAR but I do know that fangraph's system does not work well at all.
  24. Again it doesn't matter if it has credibility or not. If he had said something anti-player they would have been all over it, since it was pro-player they ignore it. THis is no different than reporting that Braun got off on a technicality and then ignoring the fact that the sample could have been tainted and the test should have never been run or released. They are not interested in the truth, they just want a story at the players expense. Players didn't do steroids isn't a story to them, random source says player might have done steroids even if there is no real proof is front page.
