  1. I still expect 1 from the central personally. The East seems to be beating up on each other and the West doesn't have a team I really trust in it.
  2. I think if we miss the playoffs this year it will likely just be due to lack of depth. We have a solid lineup, solid starting pitching, solid defense and a solid bullpen. Everything is in place to be a playoff team. The bench is pretty poor and for the most part there isn't much quality depth to step in when people do go down. My opinion of the team hasn't changed over the start of the year. Good enough to compete for the wild card. The Pirates were never going to be in the race imo so it was really the Reds I worried about and them starting slow and us hot has certainly tilted things in our favor.
  3. I am not a Mark Reynolds fan at all but I will give him a partial mulligan for his time in Cle which is just murder on RH power hitters. At the start of the off season I said that both Reynolds and Drew Stubbs were going to underperform their career numbers because of it. I wouldn't trust Reynolds as a full time player though, he is in decline and was not an amazing player even before that.
  4. Next step put the DH in the NL to protect our pitchers. Silly that the NL loses 10+ pitchers a year to injuries while hitting and running the bases. No wonder the AL is stronger.
  5. There are really few teams that actually need a CF still so the market for trading Gomez is pretty tiny. Maybe like 4 or 5 teams total and not all of them are in contention mode. I also wouldn't worry about how our farm system is ranked. Even though they have gotten better over the years they still are clearly awful at ranking prospects. Our stock was up when we had Gamel, Salome, Jeffres, Parra, LaPorta etc coming up and see how well that worked out? Most of the teams with top farm systems will see half of those guys flame out and bring nothing of value, it is just way too subjective and unpredictable to worry about.
  6. I hope the Brewers realize that these two things aren't connected. He was a fundamentally different pitcher last year and it wasn't just the move to the bullpen. It started as a starter in AAA and he changed roles to fit the teams needs for what they hoped was a playoff run. I would expect him to come to spring training as a starter and keep a move to the bullpen as a plan B.
  7. His control has improved over the past 3 years which does tend to lead to more K%, he is also throwing more sliders. I think Smith is most likely a viable starter, he pitched well at AAA in that role last year and while he only has 2 plus pitches he does have 4 total. He probably could be a middle of the rotation guy if his control gains are for real and if he ever develops his change up he could actually be better. http://kingsofkauffman.com/2013/11/19/will-smiths-successful-season/
  8. This is about the best result we could hope for. Next season he is safe now and he is injured and we are going nowhere so losing him for this year is more or less meaningless.
  9. I at least agree on the second point. Also, I agree with Briggs in that you can't have a ton of errors and be a good defensive team. You can be a poor defensive team and have no errors, however. Of course you can. The methodology for deciding if something is an error or not is just borderline idiotic. A flyball hit to an OF, he misjudges it and it falls over his head and it isn't an error. The next ball is hit where he has to range a ton to try to get to it and it bounces off his glove when many OF would have never touched it, he gets charged with an error. Fielding percentage is about as close to 100% useless as a stat can be. My guess is we have been roughly average. Our OF is above average, Segura seems above average by the eye test. Weeks is well below average and our out of position players at 1B and 3B have been well below average. Lucroy is a below average defensive C outside of pitch framing where he is above average.
  10. This is one big long list of 'facts' mostly backed up by second guessing after the fact and cherry picking the bad parts of things. Weeks at $10M seems like a bad deal but if he had not hurt his ankle and kept playing at 2010/2011 levels it would have been a steal. A pitcher that starts their career like Gallardo generally is considered a future ace, he just hasn't grown the way most young pitchers do, he has stagnated. More than anything else you are complaining about 1 month of baseball here. We are far from a perfect franchise but we are nowhere near as bad as people want to make it out to be either.
  11. Sorry, it is simply realism. I have lived way too long and watched way too many drafts and seen way too many results that weren't expected. Hoping we draft such and such is great because you believe in them, judging how good a draft is on draft day is just beyond silly and useless. You are basically drawing straws. The person who walks away from today's draft and says team X did a great job is just deluding themselves.
  12. You can tell that already? Just like the football drafts anyone who thinks they can project these guys is simply insane. There is no reason at all to get excited about drafts because your opinions on the guys your team pick are completely useless.
  13. I don't care if he is guilty or innocent, I just dislike when people jump to goofy conclusions because they just read what is the mainstream media and assume things from it. He didn't get off on just some goofy technicality, there was a lot more to it than that. It doesn't mean the sample was actually positive though. It won't surprise me if anyone did steroids. The only players I'd really be bothered by would be Ken Griffy Jr and Cal Ripken Jr.
  14. Sadly I think KRod is probably one of the 4 best guys in the bullpen now, it is just a cruddy bunch.
  15. Then you don't send him home from 3b if theres a chance of a play at the plate. Again, his Run was only insurance he wasn't the go ahead run. And there's 2 outs. The move made no sense. It's like Roenicke drew up the automatic remove ARam idea late in the game when he gets on base but failed to recognize the use of it in a proper situation. Meaning, was he the lead run on base. With 1 out it makes sense since Braun could have been forced out and thus resulting in ARam being the lead run. But that wasn't the case. And being 2outs that also removes the factor of ARam having to maybe go in hard at 2nd base to maybe break up a double play. His force out ends the inning. So I see no injury risk with 2outs and ARam on the Base paths. It was actually the perfect scenario you could ask for, for the Brewers, in being able to leave him in the game. Roenicke didn't recognize it. You don't. This statement just makes you look silly, seriously. If this is why you think he is a bad manager you are just being ridiculous. Having a slow guy who is injured get pinch hit for late in a closer game is not some big problem.
  16. It is probably a problem, but it isn't one of the bigger problems on this team and having someone like Gennett coming in late in the game probably won't help the team even with the platoon splits.
  17. Segura but mostly because of the defensive side of things. I think Castro ends up being a 20+ HR guy who hits .300. He is not a good defensive SS though.
  18. Aramis is playing on a bad knee, there is no way you want him in a situation where he is forced into a play at the plate. If anything that was one of the smarter decisions RR has made on the season. Yes leaving Henderson in makes some sense but he has 11 pitches already and he usually goes about 20-25 tops so it isn't a sure fire thing by any means. He had pitched the day before and it was his 3rd appearance in 4 days, it is really stretching things to complain about him not going 2 innings in that situation. These aren't Yost like decisions where he pinch hit with a lefty against a LOOGY and it is obviously a horrible choice, or bunting in the 1st inning etc. These are really marginal situations that boil down to more second guessing by the fans than anything. If he leaves Henderson out there and he gives up runs people would be in here complaining about why he didn't go with a different RP.
  19. These are really marginal things to complain about other than Axford who shouldn't be in high leverage situations. I mean Aramis probably shouldn't be playing extra innings since he isn't completely healthy and you don't want him in a situation where he has to slide at home to win the game. Henderson could have maybe gone another inning but there was no big deal taking him out either. Figaro looked good last night but he hasn't looked so good all year that he is a sure fire 8th inning guy. I mean I'd replace Axford with Figaro as the 2nd guy in the pen only because the pen stinks and there aren't many better options.
  20. Joe Dillon was out of baseball by the end of 2009 because he was awful and he never had an even semi decent season. Jenkins put up a higher WAR in 2007 than Dillon did any single season or his total career combined. He had an OPS over .790 in 2007 and 2008. You were completely wrong if this is what you said.
  21. I really don't understand using Axford in high leverage situations when he is still so erratic. This stinks.
  22. Gallardo's control is significantly worse now than it was when he first came up and it was in the minors. I always assumed the knee injuries messed up his mechanics but it is really hard to say.
  23. As a team the Brewers have thrown first pitch strikes only 58.9% of the time which is in the lower third of teams (#22). The Cardinals are #1 at 64.5%. Last year it was 59.1% which was #20 so it is about the same. Their swinging strike % is about the same as last year as well which is surprising considering the teams K% is way down (almost 4% down as a team). Usually when you see that it corrects itself for an individual, never really tracked it for a whole team. I think a large part of this is that Gallardo doesn't like pitching in the cold and we've just had a really tough schedule so far when it comes to the balance of good vs bad offenses faced.
  24. If only it were this easy. Pitchers are erratic, it is hard to fix. The Cardinals are playing way over their heads right now and will come down to earth at some point and will have their own struggles. It is a good rotation but it isn't a historic one like it has pitched so far.
  25. I don't disagree with this but it certainly is depressing considering how mediocre they have been so far. Combine Rogers and Peralta with Wolf's stats and you probably get about what was expected from those slots. Fiers is likely sustainable to be honest. I'd expect him to sit in the high 3 low 4 if he gets back in the rotation.
