  1. My bf's dad is like this and we always go for the somewhat impractical but cutting edge technology gift. Try something like a top of the line digital photo frame or some random wine gadget. I always think making a basket-type conglomeration gift shows more thought. If he's only kind of into wine, but likes it, go buy a really nice bottle opener, a book on how to pair wines or a wine cookbook, a nice set of glasses - one for white and one for red - and a couple of bottles of wine. Or sign him up for a wine tasting class. You can convert those ideas to beer-of-the-month and accessories, or food/cooking, or anything like that.
  2. My bf buys his grandma a Brewers gift card every year. That allows her to use it for Tickets, merchandise or food (I think).
  3. just like the woodman's next door, i plan to avoid it for a couple months. or at the least just do their take-out. it killed me to not go to woodman's after it opened, knowing the deals that are there from living in madison, but i just didnt want to deal with the ridiculous stories i heard from friends about how busy it was...especially considering the check-out lines are not the fastest things even on slow days. Been going for a couple of months and have never had any problems. I always go on weekends during the day and have never had to wait any longer there than I do at my local Pick N Save. I think you're safe.
  4. Champps is as good a place as any. Good food and all the games you could want.
  5. That's good to know. I work right up the street on 13th PT in the evenings and I've looked at that place but it made me worried, so I've never tried it.
  6. Yeah, I was also disappointed. Got there about 920 and stood in line for about 45 mins before I ever got inside. Then waited another 20 to check out when I was done. I would have really like the ASG hat mentioned above, so if anyone goes and they restock and gave those, please grab one for me. I'd be ever so appreciative. I was looking for ASG jersey Tshirts, but only found Sheets. I think the Braun and Hart ones went right away.
  7. Couldn't get a vacation day, but I'm leaving work at 9, so hopefully I'll miss the first crazy rush but still get there in time for the good stuff!
  8. We currently have a snowman head on a wooden dowel. Plush-type things seem to work the best because they're the lightest. We had an angel that was very light and her wide skirt had a wide plastic cone underneath - that wide surface for resting was crucial. We would fold down that very top, straight, high piece - fold it in half and it will provide more sturdiness.
  9. Seriously don't underestimate the size issue. I have an SLR that takes BEAUTIFUL pictures - but sometimes it's a big pain to carry that big camera around - and I'm a girl! I have the purse! So for a guy, I can't imagine carrying that thing everywhere. That being said, my mother has your basic point-and-shoot Kodak Easy Share that we gave her for Christmas in like 2000 and the thing still works like a charm. She's not so technologically inclined, so it's completely idiot-proof. We spent 10 days in Ireland and exclusively used that camera (this was long before I got my SLR) and the pictures that thing took are gorgeous. You'd never believe this dinky camera took them. If you're looking at taking pictures of your kids and the dog, don't think you have to go all out... Edit: Also, don't be talked into rechargeable batteries - whether a pack or simple rechargeable AA's. My SLR takes 4 AAs and I use your regular every day batteries and get plenty of life out of them. I watch for sales, stock up, and probably haven't spent $20 all year on batteries.
  10. SERIOUSLY thinking about calling in sick to work that day. I'm in desperate need of some free time and this sounds like just the excuse I need!
  11. After the start to the season, it's amazing that we made it above .500 before Christmas. Things are definitely looking up. Heading out on Saturday for the women's game, dinner at the Dane and then the men's game.
  12. Wow, because I was COMPLETELY disappointed in that game. Sure, it was closer than the score showed, but they were so totally outplayed and outcoached that I don't know if that matters. The number of turnovers alone is reason enough to be upset about the game. Add to that that half the turnovers were on lane violations and not getting the ball over the half in ten seconds. They were just plain outplayed. They had no answer for the pressure UConn brought, which they should have been better prepared for. They looked listless and like they were standing still. They couldn't get any penetration and when they did, they were frozen, like they didn't know what to do and quickly passed the ball back out. There was a play midway through the second half where Krabby had the ball in the paint and never attempted to go for the basket or the foul and then passed it to someone on the other side of the basket, who was also in the paint and did the same thing - no attempt at the basket - and that guy passed it right back to Krabby, who again didn't go up and then was called for a 3 second lane violation. It epitomized the entire night for me.
  13. A quick look in my messages inbox made me realize I've done a lot of transactions! bensheeps and deersveum12 both gave me something for nothing, which is beyond cool i've also traded/purchased from and gave to ewizabeff tkess minigoon dmiles23 and valpocrewsader with no problem at all.
  14. Another decommit for Eaves - all seem to be for different reasons, but the PR is not reflecting well in the hockey community. Lots of teams over-recruit and lost guys, but UW isn't usually one of them...
  15. See that's where you get into problems with assuming the Big Ten and looking at conference issues. Look at how many schools that are maybe D3 in other sports have D1 hockey teams. Minnesota-Duluth Michigan Tech St. Cloud State Superior Ferris State Directional Michigan teams Bemidji State In addition, the more looming issue for conferences in hockey right now is the likely dissolving of the CHA that will leave Robert Morris, Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State and Niagara without a conference home. The rumors currently swirling say Nebraska-Omaha will leave the CCHA and Ala-Huntsville will go there. Bemidji and Neb-Omaha, geographically, make the most sense for the WCHA and Niagra and Robert Morris have reportedly already applied to be part of the AHA. The current CHA, with it's four teams, gets an automatic NCAA tournament bid for it's winner, despite the fact that their RPI is often much lower than other teams that get left out.
  16. I wholeheartedly disagree that there should be a Big Ten hockey conference. There's no reason for it. There are rivalries that already exist in the WCHA and have for decades. Those shouldn't be forsaken merely because people like the idea of the Big Ten and want hockey to fit in that "box."
  17. Pretty impressive weekend. From the look of things, it looks like I wish we had the game broadcast here in Milwaukee. Couple of major penalties and guys getting thrown out. Nice to see the guys showing some life....
  18. I got really lucky and found a part-time afternoons office job near to my current position. I sent my resume on Monday afternoon, interviewed on Tuesday afternoon and was given the job at 8 am this morning. Thank god! I start on Monday.
  19. A few of us got our hours cut at work this week. The theory was that cutting each of us 8 hours would equal laying off one person full-time, so this way no one bears the brunt. Yesterday we had a meeting where we flew all our outside salesmen into our office. Flights, hotel and food? Upwards of $3000 (this is a small business). Then yesterday afternoon they decide that they want to leave in the AM, instead of the PM today, so they had me call and change their flights, to a tune of $150 a piece and the boss okayed it. Apparently they can't afford the $100 a week they cut from me but we can spend a few hundred to fly the salesmen home 4 hours earlier.
  20. I was really upset about this when we got DirecTV not too long ago. I called and yelled at DirecTV. I asked how they could say I was getting this station when I wasn't receiving 90% of the programming? I sent an email to FSN back then, but I'll do it again. Thanks for pushing this. I think it's ridiculous.
  21. Volunteer! Especially at this time of year, there are tons of opportunities for volunteering. See if you can find a non-profit that could use any of your skills. Not only does this get you off your butt, but you make contacts and could parlay it into something that pays. I'm going to assume, as an engineer, that you're pretty good with computers. Could you teach something to do with that? Maybe you could teach some sort of computer class at a local library. Contact your local recreation department and see what they offer for classes and see if they'd be willing to take you on. Do you have any business/college contacts in the area? Old professors? Contact them and see if they know of anything in terms of volunteering. Make yourself available and let anyone and everyone know that you've got free time and are willing to do anything to help. Those are all ideas that would be community serving but also possibly help your career. If that doens't work, just get out and volunteer. Think Boys and Girls clubs or schools or food banks or the Blood Center of WI or animal rescue or the Humane Society or any of the zillions of ethnic groups.
  22. Just reported by Tom H on his blog http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/34282374.html EDIT: Title. -PF
