  1. The Brewers really made an awful decision with him IMO skipping his last start. They based his last 14 innings on benching their best pitcher when they were supposedly trying to stay in the race? And, now teams are likely wondering if he's hurt. Strike two. I don't necessarily think he needs a great outing he just needs to throw the ball as he usually does to prove he's not hurt. Even if he's not all that sharp I don't believe that will impact how teams view him. He has a long enough history that teams won't take his last 15-20 innings as his true value.
  2. I don't want Santana, but Richards and Cron would be an impressive return.
  3. Indeed, they need to start taking offers if they haven't already. It sounds as if they've made a actual legit attempt, although if they were serious about keeping him they should've offered the extension last season, but it's in the past. Time to move forward and get some teams bidding.
  4. I short while back I remember seeing the Rays were interested in a young catcher (MLBTraderumors.com). Would Maldonado have any value? He wasn't really much of a prospect but he's playing well and would likely be an upgrade for them. Would they give us Cobb, Archer or Niemann? Maybe that's a bit optimistic.
  5. IF the Brewers were to sweep the Red over the weekend I could see them buying, somewhat. I could maybe see them going after Yunel Escobar and a reliever from somebody. That's a bout as much firepower as they have with their minor league system right now. They have enough to get to the playoffs, it's just that they're pretty far behind. If they were to somehow get hot and make it in I think they have as good of a chance as anyone if Marcum can come back healthy.
  6. There are quite a few decent trade proposals out there with various players so I'd like to see peoples ideas if we were to go into all out fire sale mode. I'd like to keep the proposals realistic. Obviously people have different ideas on what's realistic so feel free to debate on whether moves would be realistic. I don't want the thread to be about whether or not they should or shouldn't sell or about Melvin's success's or failure as a GM. Video game style allows us to disregard whether or not the number of moves is realistic. So here it goes: Gallardo to KC for Wil Myers This is one move that might be unrealistic, however the Royals don't appear all that motivated to bring up Myers, their GM apparently loves Francouer, and they have another big OF prospect in Bubba Starling who is a few years away. I've read where the Royals inquired on Garza and are still looking for a youngish pitcher with some years of control left. Hart to Pirates for Starling Marte and Kyle McPherson. Greinke to Cardinals for Zack Cox and Kolten Wong. Not sure the Cards would give Wong. Maybe Matt Adams or Joe Kelly would work instead. Weeks to Detroit for Drew Smyly Axford and Fiers to Toronto for Yunel Escobar and Noah Syndergaard. I don't particularly want to give Fiers so maybe somebody can suggest a different move. Escobar fits a big need for us and is still a solid value at 5 mil per season for the next 3 years. Ramirez to LA for Eovaldi Future lineup Aoki CF Wong 2B Braun LF Myers RF Gamel 1B LuCroy C Cox 3B Escobar SS Gomez in the 4th OF role. Marte can take over for Aoki eventually. The rotation ends up with a lot of 3-5 type starters. Hopefully 1 or two develop into more. In no particular order here's who I think would be up for consideration next year: Peralta Thornburg Smyly Eovaldi McPherson Narveson Syndergaard can join Jungmann and Bradley as the organization's top three pitching prospects. I'd offer Marcum arbitration or even try to bring him back on a short term deal as this group could use a veteran pseudo number 1 starter.
  7. I know people won't like to hear this but the team that I actually think fits the best with a Greinke trade is St. Louis. They have the right mix of B+ type prospects that could get a deal done if interested but aren't considered top 10 MLB prospect types. Joe Kelly, Matt Adams, Kolten Wong, Zach Cox are guys that look like they might work in a trade. Maybe Allen Craig, although he's likely in the long term plans with the Cards already.
  8. Sorry, couldn't help myself. Hope he turns it around soon!
  9. If he's close to being traded then 'recharging' is fine. I'm saying if they're not trading him then why skip your best starter with or without the rough short stretch he's had?
  10. Recharging his batteries? It seems like odd timing to me. If that's what it really is I don't like the decision when we're supposedly trying to make up ground against our division to sit the best pitcher on the team.
  11. I have no friggin idea what people are talking about on this one. How as a Brewer's fan can you not like the Braun extension? He's taking significantly less money to stay as opposed to ever test free agency before the age of 36. Every single one of those years he makes less then any one year of what Fielder just got paid per season. They have a true superstar in this game signed until the age of 36. Is 30 the new 50? Braun will be plenty productive even at 36 to warrant what he'll be getting. Ramirez is being paid fairly, that said if you decide you're selling then it makes sense to move him if you can.
  12. I don't think 100 mil is a low ball or token offer by any means. Do I think they're too late with that offer? Yes. Last year that may have gotten it done, but a couple months away from a bidding war I'm doubting it. Zack is in the prime of his career with stellar peripherals, durable, and a Cy Young. Somebody would give him at least 6 years on the open market with probably more per year. If Zack's happy in Milwaukee and 100 mil is cool with him then there's a shot. I will say teams have seemingly been a little less willing to hand out massive FA pitcher contracts of late so maybe that plays into the Brewers favor a bit. We'll see. To me the time to extend him was last season, but maybe the Brewers know something we don't.
  13. The replay made it seem like he saw it and he took about 3 seconds to digest everything before the ump came to the conclusion that he should be offended. Its amazing how inconsistent and subjective umpiring has become. I have seen batters slam down their helmets many times after looking at strike 3 and never get tossed. Apparently this umpire's feelings get hurt very easily. I agree. Greinke never even looked in the umps direction nor did he appear to say a word. There's a difference between being mad at a call and showing up/insulting an umpire. Poor job Mr. umpire. I'm usually the one to defend an umpire but not this time.
  14. I'm not sure if Gallardo could bring back a top 10 prospect but if anybody can he's the one. In the recent past the Royals were rumored to be looking for a young cost controlled pitcher. I'm not sure if that's still the case or if Gallardo qualifies as such anymore but here's my video game, 'what if' scenario: Gallardo to Royals for Wil Myers and Clint Robinson. The Royals GM supposedly loves Francouer so maaayyybee...?? Myers is freed, the Brewers have the flexibility to trade Hart for a couple of prospects, and Clint Robinson gets his shot at the Majors.
  15. ....... Shouldn't the question be how do we position ourselves so this scenario (which could have happened last year as well) doesn't happen again, not how can I watch meaningful baseball for as long as possible? This isn't about what we would do between the lines if we had the talent, it's about how to properly manage the situation to move the organization forward. At this point this is my feeling as well. I'm all about making a run at a championship when it presents itself. I'd do the past trades for CC, Greinke, and Marcum over again. They made a run and it and didn't get there. It was fun and worth while. Now there's a real opportunity, as you stated, to improve the franchise in a year where they're not in a very good position to make the playoffs. The extra wild card should actually help teams looking to sell. The Brewers have had some bad luck this year and plenty of under-performers so why not build up the system a bit. The do have a strong enough nucleus I believe to turn things back around in short time, maybe even next season. As for Hart, I'd be open to trade most anybody for the appropriate return. He should be able to net a very nice prospect as a top 15-25 outfielder. He should be able to return two prospects in the top 100. With Greinke, Hart, Weeks, Marcum and maybe K-Rod they could do a nice job or restocking the system.
  16. I agree that they don't really match up well with Baltimore. Marcum for Shoop would be solid and a possibility if Marcum could come back strong. I still think Texas or Detroit match up better in level of prospect and/or type of player Melvin is likely to target.
  17. I like the idea of Pastronicky for either or both of Wolf and K-Rod. I think somebody will pony up for Greinke. I'd offer him to Detroit for Turner and Smyly and see where it goes.
  18. I don't know. I like the trade for a starting C. There was really 0 difference picking at 12 or 14. They actually do need a shot blocker that can come off the week side considering the level of D Jennings and Monte play. I actually think their roster is somewhat interesting.. more interesting if they can keep Ersan. Between Jennings and Ellis that will me more than 50 percent of all the shots taken so they really only need some guys that can rebound anyway.
  19. I too would much rather pony up to keep him. Pay Greinke and Gallardo and hope to fill out the rest of the rotation with our young guys on the cheap. The thing about investing in premium talent during prime years is that the value of that player never really goes down should they need to move him in the future. If they are able to extend him I'm cool with overpaying as long as there are 0 no trade clauses. The Brewers need to hold the leverage with being able to move players.
  20. I can't speak to whether Law is a clown or not but I will say I think it's gotten to the point where prospects are being over valued. You can't (or shouldn't IMO) always live for tomorrow. Sometimes you just say it's time to take a shot at winning the whole thing. I mean that's the goal, right? The Brewers need to hold out for elite level talent in return. Greinke can and will make a difference to the team that gets him. His value will be magnified in the playoffs.
  21. Yeah, I don't see Texas parting with Profar but speculating is entertaining at least. I probably like Holland more than most so I'd be OK with getting him back. He's young, throws hard, and is under control through 2018 with the team options. I think he compares quite well with Gallardo. I've been a Melvin supporter/defender but I could really see him pulling something along the lines of Matt Harrison, Ogando, and Moreland... and yes, then he would lose my support.
  22. I'd rather Have Olt/Perez/+ prospect. Either would be a nice return. If either were on the table right now I'd take it. We'll see how Melvin is at playing on the other end of the trade game. I'm disappointed they're not in position to make a run at the post-season but this is part of my attraction to MLB over other sports. The opportunity to rebuild/restock at will. For another discussion, but my tune has changed on wanting a salary cap as that would likely come with a salary floor. Nothing would ruin baseball more for me than a salary floor.
  23. I think Detroit makes a good match as well. I'd shoot for Turner and Smyly. I know there's a real split on how people view Melvin on this board but some of you are really over the top. Referring to him as a clown? Really? I will agree that I'm a little concerned on getting proper value back for Greinke. Melvin does have a history of being, I guess, conservative when it comes to drafting, and trading players. There's a real opportunity here to improve the franchise as opposed to improving the team. If they choose to move Greinke I hope we also take the opportunity to move some other parts to build for the near future. Corey Hart would still have strong value...different topic though.
  24. Interesting topic. As long as he's not in it will live on forever. To me a lifetime ban means he's not allowed to be employed by the league. I would let him in and not have a ceremony for him. He's the greatest hitter to have played the game. To have him not in doesn't seem right considering some of the rest that are in. Just because there's a rule doesn't mean that rule should live on forever. Rules are meant to be challenged at some point. I'm not saying you want to allow gambling that can alter games but you need to take into consideration what has gone on in the game and kind of see the big picture. Why is gambling on baseball wrong? It could alter the outcome of a game and brings into question the integrity of the game. To me what Rose did really isn't much different than those who took/take steroids, doctor baseballs, or have played with a corked/illegal bat. Any of those offenses likely altered the outcome of at least 1 game yet offending players are given suspensions that amount to a few missed weeks. Putting him in the Hall doesn't lessen the transgression in my view and won't make him a better person but he was one of the best ever between the lines.
