  2. Yes but he is also cheaper and would demand less years than both Burnett and Sheets. Penny is also a better option than Garland and Byrd and other FA options out there for the price. I don't trust Dempster enough to give him a long contract and whoever does that is going to regret it in a couple of years. Penny is the best option for the Brewers to stick into the #3 spot in the rotation of the available free agents.
  3. He isn't a FA yet but it looks like the Dodgers are going to be buying out Penny's contract. The decision is going to be today which I believe is the deadline the Dodgers have to make a decision on Penny.
  4. Brad Penny would be a cheaper option than both Sheets and Burnett and for about the same years or less.
  5. Interesting you bring this up Durham did get hurt a couple of times near the end of the season.
  6. It isn't a fluke when you look at how Weeks has been improving every year at 2B. If he continues to improve I believe he will be an average 2B.
  7. Then there is this funny tidbit coming from Boras. "Speaking to reporters at the General Manager's Meetings in Dana Point, Calif., agent Scott Boras said the Jason Varitek deserved a contract comprable to Yankees catcher Jorge Posada, who signed a four-year, $52.4 million deal last offseason." If Varitek can get a 4 year $52.4 million deal I might just dust off the old catchers glove and see what I could get.
  8. That is what I thought. But if they are why not let them and steal Martin from them?
  9. According to Peter Gammons Russel Martin maybe available on the trade market. "Some Dodger officials have spread the word that Martin will either be traded or moved to third base, with a Jason Varitek signing a possibility." Salome, Periard, and TGJ (assuming Pierre or Jones or both are traded) would that be a fair deal? If the Dodgers sign Varitek they would have Salome in the minors and be ready by 2010 or 2011 or he could be their back up catcher in 2009 I doubt that though. Would this even be enough for Martin? Martin would take over at catcher in 2009 splitting time with Kendall and when there is a tough lefty that Hall or whoever the other 3B option is you could always play Martin there instead or have him play against certain righties.
  10. Even though it is interesting to talk about trading for Peavy it looks as though Melvin is not going to be trading for Peavy. Trade talk: Melvin said reports that he is engaged in trade talks with San Diego about right-hander Jake Peavy are incorrect. "They're looking for young pitching," said Melvin. "That's one thing I can't do. I'm not going to trade a (Yovani) Gallardo or (Manny) Parra." From the MJS.
  11. 1. Trade Fielder to the Yankees for Hughes, Jackson, and Kennedy. Probably to much for Fielder or maybe to little. 2. Sign Adam Dunn to play 1B 5/$65 mil with the 5th year being a team option with a buyout. 3. Sign Brad Penny. 1/$15 mil and a team option for a second year at $18 mil. 4. Trade Hall and Suppan to the Tigers for Willis and Polanco. 5. Trade Weeks, Villanueva, and Nelson to the Mariners for Putz and Beltre. Probably not enough to get that trade done but if the Brewers take on all of the salary for Beltre it shouldn't be a problem. 6. Trade Cameron and a low prospect to the Rays for Jackson. Lineup: 1. Polanco 2B 2. Hardy SS 3. Braun LF 4. Dunn 1B 5. Beltre 3B 6. Hart RF 7. Jackson CF 8. Kendall/Rivera C Pitching: Yo Parra Penny Bush Hughes/Jackson Bullpen: Shouse Torres Putz McClung Kennedy Jackson/Hughes Dillard/DiFelice Bench: Lamb/Branyan 1B/3B Kapler 4th OF Rottino C/1B/3B Rivera C/1B Iribarren 5th OF/2B/3B/SS? I don't like the bench but the pitching rotation would be set for the next couple of years at least. I believe this would put us above $90 million for the team salary though so I don't see this as a possibility at all though.
  12. I'm sorry but this is not at all true. Greene is not a good SS in any sense. Decrease in OBP, Average, and Walks. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/1826_SS_season_full_1_20080930.png http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/1826_SS_season_full_0_20080930.png http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/1826_SS_season_full_3_20080930.png http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs/1826_SS_season_full_5_20080930.png
  13. That is interesting. I'm wondering if Melvin is moving forward in anticipation that CC is not going to sign with the Brewers. I don't see Peavy getting traded until the winter meetings though. I believe that Towers is going to wait for Sabathia to sign and then go from there.
  14. I'm not sure if trading for Atkins would be a wise decision especially with the kind of prospects that would be needed to be traded to the Rockies. Atkins would be under control for 2009 and 2010. I believe the Rockies would be looking for pitching just under what they asking for in return of trading Holliday. According to the Denver Post Holliday, Atkins, and Taveras are available. The Rocky Mountain News also have an article on this. I'm guessing it would take a #3 or #4 type of a pitcher plus someone like Green and Cain to get Atkins. I would rather put that package together to get Holliday over Atkins even with only having Holliday for one year.
  15. Does this really matter? How many times does a manager really have to light the fire under the players. I'm more interested in his managing of the bullpen and other more important things than this. To me this is very low along with a manager who is good with the media. It really isn't necessary.
  16. The same video from a different spot.
  17. Yuck! Plus Cordero is now a free agent that shows you how much the Nationals have faith in him. Chad Cordero.
  18. That link is very confusing and it doesn't say much of anything. I just assumed he was released when I read that. It is very vague in its wording and leaves more questions than answers really. I'm guessing this means he gets to choose where he goes and I don't think he would want to go to the Knicks.
  19. I'm not sure but here is an article from ESPN on Damon Jones.
  20. I believe the Brewers and Capuano were working out a minor league deal. At least that is what Capuano was hinting towards when he was interviewed in Arizona earlier in the year.
  21. It is probably from the notion that big market clubs get more media exposure. Which for the life of me I can't figure out. This shouldn't be true anymore. With the internet and other advancements in technology this shouldn't be as big of deal as some people make it out to be anymore. With how baseball is being run now you can watch your team from no matter where you live you can also listen to your teams broadcast no matter where you are in the country with XM radio. Now you can catch highlights on your cell phone and get updates on your cell phone. Is the media coverage really that big of a difference any more between a small market team and a large market team. Maybe I'm missing something here.
  22. Damon Jones is not on the team though he was released awhile back.
  23. Neither Florida or Kansas City were ever a real possible destination for Fielder.
  24. I feel bad for the Twins fans with their new stadium. Building a stadium in Minnesota without a roof for a baseball team was just plain stupid.
  25. Didn't the Indians also offer CC the same contract? Or was it 5 years $100 million. I can't remember what it was but I know the Indians offered CC something close to 4 or 5 years near the $100 million mark and he didn't accept that offer.
