  1. He isn't with all the advanced defensive metrics I have seen Weeks is ahead of Cano in all of them I believe.
  2. If the trade goes through with the Brewers and the Yankees and assuming it is a 1 for 1 swap for Melky Cabrera and Mike Cameron the Brewers would have an extra $9.5 million from the deal. I don't think it is a 1 for 1 swap though. Even if another low salary player comes in the deal like Kennedy the Brewers will still have $9 million more than they had to add to payroll. Expected payroll would be now ~$57 million before another FA signing. I believe the Brewers total payroll coming into 2009 will be around $70-75 million. That gives the Brewers about $18 million to work with in free agency. Possibly signing either Dunn or Fuentes type of players. Bill Hall is also rumored to be involved in the deal that may send Cameron to the Yankees. So that would be even more payroll cut but I don't see why you would trade Hall when Lamb was just signed it makes no sense unless the Brewers are going to go with Casey McGehee at 3rd to platoon with Lamb. I believe the Brewers would have to take on some of the salary of Hall and Cameron though if both are traded to the Yankees for low salary players like Kennedy and Cabrera.
  3. Oh but he is. http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/030110.php, http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/030127.php, and more defensive stats, some more. Abreu defensively has been declining and his offensive stats he would bring to the Brewers would off set his defensive deficiencies. Dunn would bring in more value than Abreu.
  4. I don't see a match with the Brewers and the Rangers. It is tough to really gauge what the Rangers need. They have Hamilton, Salty, Teagarden, Ramirez, Davis, Kinsler, and Young. They Rangers don't need catchers that is for sure. OF maybe a question mark with Hamilton, Cruz, and Murphy? I don't see what the Brewers could offer to the Rangers other than a relief pitcher for Millwood or Padilla. If there is a match with the Rangers I don't see it. But if there is a trade maybe the Brewers could get Murphy also and have him replace Kapler as the 4th OF. Murphy is a left handed bat and is about the equivalent to Kapler.
  5. The Brewers did look into Hoffman. Melvin probably thinks that the amount of money and number of years wouldn't be a match for the Brewers in signing Hoffman. If my memory is correct didn't Melvin say the same thing last year about this time of the year about payroll not increasing and that they were not going to be going after any free agents in the off season. Then about a couple weeks later the Brewers announce they have signed Eric Gagne to a 1 year deal worth $10 million. Don't read into what Melvin is saying you don't really know what Melvin is up to nor any of the other GM's in MLB. This might just be a ploy by Melvin so he isn't showing his whole hand. The Brewers are going to sign someone or trade for someone this off season I have a funny feeling it will be a trade and then someone being signed to replace that player.
  6. Willits would be a 4th/5th OF on the team and I feel more comfortable with Willits than I would with Gwynn. If Willits could do what he did in 2007 and have a .400 OBP and a .280-.290 average he would be a decent leadoff hitter for the Brewers. This could also help Weeks relax more when in the batters box and attack some more pitches that he can hit instead of working the count all the time.
  7. I would rather sign Dunn than even think about offering a contract to Abreu who is declining offensively and defensively. Defensively Dunn is just about the same if not a little bit better than Abreu. Offensively Dunn is better by a lot. Offering Hoffman a 2 year deal worth $9 mil per isn't something I would like to do. I would rather offer Fuentes 3 years at $8 mil per year which is what I believe will get it done unless the Cardinals come in higher and then they can have him. It won't take $9 mil per year to get Hoffman more around the $5-7 mil per year for about 2 years. I would then sign starting pitchers who would sign a 1 year deal. Pitchers like Pavano, Penny, and others. Targeting a pitcher like Johnson or Sheets for 2 or 3 years would also be a good idea. Having a rotation of Gallardo, Parra, Penny, Bush, Sonnanstine would be good enough for the wild card. Trading Hart to the Rays for Sonnanstine plus a low level prospect could happen. If the Brewers sign Dunn they would need to keep Cameron because of his defense. A lineup of 1.Weeks 2. Cameron 3. Braun 4. Fielder 5. Hardy 6. Dunn 7. Hall/Lamb 8. Kendall/Rivera Would be an improvement over last years offense. Iribarren, Rivera, Lamb/Hall, Kapler, and Nelson on the bench. Bullpen: Swindle, Riske, Suppan, Villanueva, McClung, DiFelice, Hoffman/Fuentes. The bullpen would be an improvement from last year and the starting rotation would be no worse than what we had up to the point where the Brewers traded for CC.
  8. This one actually looks interesting.? I'm hoping this one is better than #3 and isn't such a huge let down.? Maybe I should not have such high expectations for these kinds of movies and I won't be so disappointed when they don't meet my expectations.
  9. I brought this back up because it looks as though the Angels are going to lose out on Teixeira. Trading for Fielder makes a lot of sense for the Angels. But does it make a lot of sense for the Brewers? With the loss of Sabathia and more than likely the loss of Sheets where does Melvin see the Brewers heading towards? If the Brewers believe that they will not be able to compete for the Wild Card (which I believe is completely inane idea) do the Brewers send Fielder to the Angels. Possible players the Brewers could get in return from the Angels for Fielder. Howie Kendrick, Ervin Santana, Nick Adenhart, Brandon Wood, and Anthony Ortega. I wouldn't mind a deal that sends Ortega, Wood, and Trumbo/Willits. Maybe that is a little bit to much for Fielder but it would give the Brewers a CF in Willits and a 3B in Wood or a future 1B in Trumbo. Fielder could be the DH for the Angels and Morales would be their 1B. Ortega could be a good #2 behind Gallardo in 2010. I believe the Brewers would probably have to add a low level prospect in the deal though not 100% sur on that though.
  10. Millwood would be interesting and he does have a rather high contract. If the Brewers take on all of Millwood's contract (highly doubtful) they could get him cheap. I'm not sure who the Rangers would want back in return for Millwood though and I don't believe the Brewers and Rangers match up very well in a trade. I would rather go after Penny and trade Hart for Sonnanstine/Niemann type of pitchers. Having a rotation of Gallardo, Parra, Sonnanstine, Bush, Penny/Suppan. It isn't the best rotation in baseball but it should be enough to net at least the Wild Card. With signing Penny and trading for a Sonnanstine/Niemann type of a pitcher you have some flexibility if someone gets injured by having Suppan or Bush available. If the Brewers could sign someone like Adam Dunn the offense would be an improvement over last years and maybe even better than the 2007 offense.
  11. I'm guessing here but what really was said that CC said he isn't that interested in playing in New York and would prefer pitching somewhere else. That probably got twisted and rearranged to become CC declines Yanks offer.
  12. The Braves right now don't even know if Soriano will be able to pitch in spring training yet since he recently had surgery on his elbow. That is a big concern and I wouldn't count on Soriano being as good as he was in 2007. Cameron doesn't need to be resigned and I don't see the Brewers extending Cameron any longer than for this year which he is signed to play for the Brewers. Cain could be ready by 2009 to take over in CF for the Brewers. Adam Dunn would be a nice signing but Braun would be moved to RF and Dunn would be playing in LF.
  13. I would rather the Brewers have signed Ramon Vazquez to platoon with Hall at 3B. Vazquez would be better than Lamb at 3B defensively and their stats are about the same offensively against righties.
  14. It is an unconfirmed rumor from Andrew Baggarly the Giants beat writer. This is bad news since the Giants 1st round pick is protected and if true I don't see the Brewers having any chance in resigning CC and the picks the Brewers would have gotten from the Yankees will turn into a sandwich pick. I hope the Dodgers wake up and stop going after Manny and go after CC instead. I would rather the Dodgers, Yankees, or Angels sign CC if the Brewers can not sign him. At least the Brewers will get a 1st round pick if the Dodgers, Yankees, or Angels sign him but if the Giants get him the Brewers only receive a sandwich pick.
  15. MLB Front Office Manager Dev Diary.? It looks a little bit like Head Coach.
  16. What about a Hall for Tejada swap? I believe that would be both beneficial to the Brewers and the Astros. The Astros would get a versatile player in Hall and lose some salary in the short term with Hall and the Brewers would be taking on salary for the short term 1 yr and losing the long term financial committment to Hall. 3B defensively would improve with Tejada and you would be getting about the same amount of production as Hall and a LH bat. Tejada hit .284/.310/.724 against righties last year and .282/.326/.743 against lefties last year. It would solve the 3B issue for next year if you swap Hall for Tejada. Maybe I was over valuing Tejada's value or undervaluing Salome's value but Tejada still has life left in his bat he may not hit as many HR's as he once did but he would be that stop gap between Gamel and 3B the Brewers are looking for and would cost less than what Blalock would cost and he would be better defensively.
  17. Y. Escobar wasn't the piece holding up the Peavy deal it was the pitching prospects Atlanta didn't want to part with which was holding up the deal. What about Francoeur, and James for Hart and Dillard. The Brewers then could send Francoeur to the Royals for DeJesus and a relief pitcher thus allowing the Brewers to send Cameron for some pitching and either signing Dunn or Burrell.
  18. I don't think he is slowing down at all. He has only broken stealing 20 or more bases 3 times in his career. In each of his other full seasons he has been in the teens in stolen bases. Though I do believe Patterson was hampered with a hamstring or some kind of nagging leg injury last year. So that maybe of some concern with him.
  19. A one year stop gap at 3B with Tejada would be interesting. It would also give Gamel time to either show that he is going to be the future 3B or a corner OF. Ken Rosenthal article it is on the bottom of the page. I don't believe the Astros would trade Tejada to the Brewers though but weirder things have happened like the Cubs trading with the Pirates and stealing away Ramirez. First question what would it take to get Tejada? Second would it be worth it to send that talent to Houston? I was thinking a deal that would send Salome and Iribarren to the Astros for Tejada. The Brewers wouldn't be losing much. I don't believe Salome is going to stick at catcher and if he doesn't stick at catcher the only spot for him to play at would be DH. Since the NL doesn't have a DH Salome would be useless for the Brewers. I don't see how the Astros will get back what they traded away last year for Tejada though and the deal above would be a decent deal for the Astros and probably the best deal they will get for Tejada.
  20. I forgot to post a link to the articles about the Astros making Tejada available. Fox Sports Link and the Houston Chronicle Link.
  21. The Astros are apparently also shopping Miguel Tejada. The Dodgers and Twins have shown interest in Tejada. To me the Dodgers make more sense than the Twins.
  22. Because the last time they did that Alex Rodriguez held them for hostage threatening to sign with another team after opting out of his contract. Maybe the Yankees don't want to do something like that again and go through the pain of resigning someone who may not want to be there.
  23. Patterson right now is a 5th OF at best though I wouldn't mind having Patterson as depth in the OF in the minors or just giving him a contract to compete for a backup job in spring training. But I still wouldn't sign him because at best he would be Tony Gwynn Jr. Patterson is in decline right now and I wouldn't give him a contract. I do see Patterson signing on with another team though just not with the Brewers and if he can put up some numbers close to what he did in Baltimore he could be a decent 4th/5th OF for someone. Patterson's career stats. 24. Lawrie doesn't surprise me at all really. If he would be put at 3B instead of catcher I believe without any set backs we could see Lawrie in Milwaukee by the mid 2011 season or the start of the 2012 season.
  25. I know Joe Torre will make it in as a manager into the Hall of Fame but does his career warrant him to be in as a player also?
