Better Year So far: Josh Hamilton or Chase Utley?
nate82 replied to bobbledude25's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I'm going to have to go with Utley on this one. Because of his home and away splits are not that far apart compared to Hamilton's. Utley is batting .047 pts higher at home and Hamilton is batting .107 pts higher at home compared to his away average. But to be fair both are taking advantage of their home parks launching pads. Utley and Hamilton are both in a hitter friendly ball park. I believe the Phillies and Rangers ball park for hitting is better than the Rockies home park. Utley By Breakdown AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Home 120 28 41 6 1 16 35 13 3 19 5 0 .342 .413 .808 1.221 Away 105 20 31 10 0 5 17 14 4 15 1 0 .295 .392 .533 .925 Hamilton By Breakdown AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Home 108 27 42 8 2 10 39 9 0 9 0 0 .389 .421 .778 1.199 Away 131 15 37 8 1 6 26 11 1 27 2 0 .282 .336 .496 .832 -
Rivera will get more starts this month and in July. He hasn't gotten that many starts because there have been off days after night and then day games. From the last week of June until the All Star break the Brewers don't have a day off. That is a 17 game stretch where they don't get a day off until the All Star break. Kendall will get a couple of games off during that stretch of games. Then there is another stretch where the Brewers don't get a day off until the 7th of August after the All Star game. So Rivera will get plenty of starts in July and some more this month. Probably 1 or 2 more starts this month and about 3 or 4 in July.

I don't have a problem with players speaking up about their playing time, wanting to be traded, wanting to be released, wanting a new contract, etc. I don't see why the main stream media makes a big deal over these situations. Maybe its because there is nothing to talk about and this keeps them on the air every day. Chad Johnson, Brian Urlacher, add another infinite amount of players who have complained about one thing or another. If the player is not hurting the team I don't really care what they are saying. It is obvious that Hall is not hurting the Brewers and is still being a team player while he is being disgruntled with his current playing time. The fans have the right to boo and a player has the right to air out their concerns. It doesn't matter if you like it or not they have the same right to complain as you do as a fan.

Now if we could only get this great announcing for baseball games. Fox and ESPN suck. I wish they would get some new and better commentators for the games on Fox and ESPN. It was a great game I can't believe the Pens came back and won that game. I thought for sure Detroit was going to win during the first over time. I'm definitely going to watch the hockey game over the NBA finals tonight.

You are still guessing that the pitcher is going to be throwing that pitch you are sitting on. Guessing is guessing no matter which way you spin it. So if you strike out or get an out because you didn't get the pitch you were sitting on that is different than guessing? Sitting on a pitch is just another term in baseball for guessing. It just makes it sound better than the hitter guessing at the pitch.
-
Ehhh. Everyone on the team is a guess hitter. Everyone in the MLB is a guess hitter. As a hitter they are guessing what the pitch is and where it will be. If you are not thinking about that then you are probably not a good hitter. Example of Hardy being a guess hitter last night. He swung at a low inside slider he was probably looking for that high fastball and looked real foolish when swinging at that slider. Every hitter in the MLB guesses with hitting.
-
No but after two years on the big league club he should be performing better than he has. Dillon is nothing but a bench player nothing more nothing less. He has shown little to no power to get extra base hits. He is slower than Hall, defensively he can't get to all the plays that a MLB 3B is asked to get to. He has a noodle for an arm. Offensively Hall is better than Dillon and brings more to the plate than Dillon does. Hall's ability to hit for power to get extra base hits far out weighs what Dillon brings to you offensively. We already have a couple of guys who can do the high OBP. We have a catcher in Kendall who is exactly like Dillon. Hall brings more production in the lineup than Dillon does. If you have Dillon in the lineup you are losing production. Dillon can fill two holes in the lineup while leaving another hole in the place of Hall. Dillon can be put in the lead off spot Weeks is better there though or you can put him in the 8th spot in the lineup. Kendall already plays that spot in the lineup better than him. Now you either have to put him in the 7th spot and if he is getting on he will just be a double play candidate with Kendall batting in the 8th spot. Dillon causes no threat for a stolen base he doesn't have the speed to even challenge a pitcher. Hall at least can swipe a base if needed. There is more than just the hitting that will cause a loss in production for the team.
-
If you have Dillon in the lineup where do you put him? Do you put him in the 7th spot? With a career 4 extra base hits yeah thats some real production versus left handed pitching. That is J.J. Hardy like against RHP. The production in the lineup significantly decreases with Dillon in the lineup against LHP than it does with Hall. Again what has Dillon done in the MLB? Answer is nothing. He has done absolutely nothing to deserve to be in a lineup as a starter. No one has yet to prove that Dillon is a good player in the MLB he doesn't even have enough PA's to justify even starting him. Dillon is a Jeffrey Hammonds like player and we all know how well that turned out. Just because you have good stats in one spot in your career doesn't make you good. Hammonds was good in Colorado and Dillon was good in the minors both are not good MLB type players.
-
Good grief I was hoping you weren't basing your argument off just this season's PA. I hope that you aren't just being stubborn. Not at all but he still doesn't have any power to speak of against MLB type pitchers in the past 2 years. If his minor league numbers were that good wouldn't you see the same against MLB type pitchers? We are not seeing these numbers he is not what he is in the minors. There were players in the past for the Brewers who were great at spring training does that make them a great player? I will take the stats from a guy who has been producing at the MLB level over the one who has been producing at AAA. Again Dillon is nothing more than a AAAA type of a player. Now that's just arbitrary. Hall's made some crazy plays over the course of his time in Milwaukee, and that's earned him a free pass to some extent. Imho it's relatively plain to see that when he plays D, he has the unfortunate tendency to play grounders off to his side (as opposed to getting in front of them), leading to misplays & errors. Dillon is every bit as reliable at 3B as Hall, although Joe won't be able to make certain (few & far between) plays that Hall can. Dillon can't make any of the plays Hall makes and most of them are the ones that 3B are expected to make. Dillon can not make those plays. He doesn't have the arm for it.
-
So Dillon's 1 double against lefties so far this season is good enough? The power numbers for Dillon is horrible flat out horrible. He has no power when hitting off MLB type pitchers. He has yet to even show any power at all that he showed in the minors. It has been 2 years of this. On the other hand you have a proven player in Bill Hall who can hit lefties and with power. That is a huge drop off. I don't care what someone does in the minors. Dillon has not shown that he is capable of doing what he did in the minors. Not to mention that Hall is better on defense at 3B than Dillon. Hall has a better arm and has more range than Dillon. These same arguments have come up when talking about Brady Clark, Podsednik, and other former Brewers that were just like Dillon. He is nothing but a AAAA type of a player. Going from Hall to Dillon is a huge drop off in production.
-
But if Branyan is struggling at the plate you don't have a player who can put in against a RHP where you would be confident in getting some success from them. Putting Dillon in place of Branyan is a huge drop off in production compared to Hall replacing Branyan. There is more than just seeing LHP for the platoon. Branyan is going to struggle at some point in the season. Plus I would rather have Hall around to take AB's from Prince, Weeks, Hardy, or Branyan in case anyone of them get injured. I would rather take my chances with Hall than with Dillon.
-
Nearly every player on this team regularly swings at pitches nowhere near the strike zone Dillon included. Hall is a better hitter against left handed pitchers than Dillon is. Hall has been making contact it is evident in his batting average rising. Hall also had a 7 game hitting streak before Sunday's game. Except that he hit LHP well in the minors & has continued to have success in the majors. Sometimes you have to trust the scouting when there's no large sample. Dillon is yet another RHP that fares much better v. LHP... just like Hall. I don't agree here. Hall is above and beyond Dillon against LHP I will take Hall's power and ability to get extra base hits over Dillon's ability to get extra base hits.
-
Trade Hardy and move Hall to SS. Escobar will be about ready when Hall's contract is about to be up and will be a cheaper option at SS than Hardy will be. This will be Hardy's second arbitration year correct? So his value will increase this year and since Hall signed a few years ago so he will be cheaper compared to if the Brewers would sign Hardy to an extension. Escobar can do everything that Hardy is doing now I don't see why the Brewers would even sign Hardy to an extension at all.
-
Professional at-bats? Define professional at-bats. Dillon doesn't have enough plate appearances against LHP to even get an accurate look at how well Dillon does against LHP. Hall has more AB's this year against LHP than Dillon does in the last 3 years that he has played. There is no proof to back up this claim.
-
Dillon and Branyan yuck. I like Branyan and Dillon is OK if he gets a start 2-4 times a month. I don't like the idea of trading Hall at all. Not because I'm a big fan of Hall but because if Weeks, Fielder, or Hardy goes down we don't have anything to replace any of them. At least nothing that is ready for MLB. No Gamel and LaPorta are not ready for MLB. Both of their defense is horrible and they are not ready yet. I don't see Iribarren as a possible replacement either. Nor do I see Crabe a good replacement either. I still don't see why a lot of people have this love affair with Dillon.
-
Would a Gillespie, Hardy or Hall (Hall would be under control longer than Hardy), Brad Nelson to get Greinke and a low level prospect? I don't know the Royals farm system of who would be available for us to get with this trade. For the Royals with Hall or Hardy you can put them at SS and get more production than Tony Pena Jr. is currently giving them. With Gillespie they have a future corner outfielder. I'm not sure what the situation is with the Royals and their farm system so maybe a deal like this would replenish it for them. Maybe remove Hall or Hardy and Gillespie and trade LaPorta, Iribarren, and Crabe for Greinke and a low level prospect. Any other thoughts?

Your 2008 NL All Star Team through June 1
nate82 replied to PrimeTime955's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I filled it out quickly and I thought I missed the Nationals one player. Not really looking over what I had on there and I noticed I didn't have enough players and threw in Zimmerman at 3B since he was the first name that popped into my head. Wright is probably the right (no pun intended) choice to put into the 3B slot as a reserve. -
Players starting to undress before they reach the dugout!
nate82 replied to 2hoophead's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
The baggy uniforms is actually a throw back thing. Once teams started doing the throwback uniforms the players started wearing more like that. If you look at pictures of players for a long ago you will notice that the uniforms were baggier because it was one size fits all uniform. Are they becoming excessively too baggy? Is the real question at hand I don't really care what the uniforms look like. If they want to go with the baggy pants or shirts whatever I don't really care. If they are playing baseball it doesn't really matter what they are wearing as long as they are wearing something. I don't want the MLB to become like the NFL where all the players are regulated to wearing their uniforms exactly the same. I believe the NFL has gone to far with their image and makes none of the players stand out. I like how the MLB has a loose policy on the uniforms unlike the NFL which has gotten to the point of being overly ridiculous. -

The Official Get Braun to the all star game thread
nate82 replied to BREWCREW5's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
1. Soriano, A. 2. Fukudome, K. 3. Griffey, K. 4. Beltran, C. 5. Holliday, M. 6. Burrell, P. 7. Lee, C. 8. Ankiel, R. These players are all in front of Braun. If you were voting of the top 10 players Pence is behind Braun in the voting the last time they put out the results. Of the OF for BA Braun, Fukudome, and Holliday are in the top 10. For OBP Fukudome, Holliday, and Burrell are in the top 10. For SLG Braun, Burrell, Holliday, and Soriano are in the top 10. For OPS Braun, Holliday, and Burrell are in the top 10. So by your logic Braun should be voted for right? He is in the top 10 for OF in 3 of the 4. Other notables that I would vote for and have been voting for are Nate McClouth and Ryan Ludwick who are in the top 10 for OF in those stats as much as Braun is. Soriano, Griffey, Ankiel, and Beltran have no right to be even in the top 10 for voting. Again the fans disappoint. -

Gamel hitting wise will be ready to play 3B everyday but defensively yuck. I don't want to have another year of a Braun type of a player at 3B. I don't like the Branyan/Dillon platoon at 3B yuck that is almost as bad as the Graff/Counsel platoon last year. I would rather just trade Gwynn and Crabbe to the Padres for Wolf and a B/C type of a prospect. Plus moving Hall is not as easy as it would be moving Gwynn and another player. I'm not sure there are any teams looking for a player like Hall that are willing to give up some pitching. I love Bill Hall but if the right trade came around I would take it but I'm not sure trading him would be a good thing. I would rather continue the Branyan and Hall platoon. With the Hall and Branyan platoon you are not losing a lot of production as you are with a Branyan and Dillon platoon. If Prince gets hurt or needs a day off I would rather have Hall around than Dillon. Dillon playing everyday or the possibility of playing a lot of games makes me sick. I would rather trade Gwynn, Gillespie, and Crabbe for Greinke. I'm not sure that would be enough for Greinke we would probably have to add another player in there probably a low level pitching prospect.

If Ben keeps on pitching the way he has will he be a finalist for the Cy Yong award? I think he is with the most complete games in the NL and only Brandon Webb who is a Cy Young Candidate is the only other player with a complete game. I know there are other things to look at than complete games and shut outs. But I believe complete games have become rare for starting pitchers there was only about 70 pitchers last year with a complete game and only a couple with multiple complete games. You can't fault Sheets record it is at 6-1 right now and his ERA is close to Webb's and Zambranos. So is Ben Sheets a Cy Young Candidate?

Fixing the Milwaukee Bucks -- Latest: Mo Williams traded (reply #290)
nate82 replied to twobrewers's topic in Off-Topic Forum
As of right now I'm not even sure trading Redd or keeping Redd or even trading or keeping Williams would help the Bucks out. Even if the Bucks got Carmello I'm not sure the Bucks would even be a top team in the East with that trade. I'm not even sure the Bucks could get a PG at the spot they are at right now in the draft that will be able to help this team next year. For the Bucks to be even competitive next year they would have had to of gotten the #1 pick and drafted Rose with that pick. He is the only PG that would be able to help lead the Bucks and to be the QB of the team.
