  1. Jeff Bianchi career OPS: 578 The love affair over Jeff Bianchi is, well, hysterical. Giving a bench spot to a guy like that would be a move for mediocrity.
  2. Agreed. This would be the equivalent of us having brought back Nyjer Morgan to be our 5th OF, while we already have a Nyjer clone in Schafer. I don't see anything that Overbay will bring to the team that Gamel doesn't already bring. I get what you're trying to say but it's not the same situation once Corey Hart got hurt. People forget that when Hart got hurt we indirectly lost our top pinch hitter / DH in interleague play by promoting Gamel from within. That's why I view the interest in Overbay as more of an indictment on Taylor Green, Jeff Bianchi, Bobby Crosby and Daniel Murphy than anything on Gamel. The more I think about adding Overbay the more I like it. Originally I wanted RH bat to platoon with Gamel but adding Gonzalez could indirectly shore that up. Then my biggest concern was the lack of OF depth on the bench if Overbay and Green ended up getting the last two spots. However that isn't even an issue as long as we get a backup at 1B to allow Gamel to roam around *IF* needed. I hate even thinking about Braun or Aoki getting hurt but if either went down you could move Gamel to the corner outfield spot and start Overbay at 1st. IMO the biggest loser in this situation would be Taylor Green with his dreaded options as he would have a limited time on the roster until Hart returned. Edit: Just realized Overbay signed with the Redsox so replace Overbay with Thome
  3. I remembered Aoki as soon as I hit post. Let me rephrase that. Best backup middle infielder? (Sorry Craig Counsell)
  4. Segura can't play every day and injuries happen so it's AWESOME getting someone as talented as Alex Gonzalez to come off our bench. Dare I say this is the best bench player Melvin has signed in his time in Milwaukee?
  5. I really like the idea of signing Alex Gonzalez and another backup 1B. I think I'd lean more towards a RH bat that can play 1st like Juan Rivera or Carlos Lee over another lefty bat like Lyle Overbay. Between Gamel, Green and even Morris we have enough LH bats to cover at 1st but could use a platoon partner for em. I just can't imagine Carlos Lee taking a small enough contract to play here which makes Rivera much more likely. Gonzalez would fit in nicely as the backup to both Weeks and Segura. I just wonder who would play 2B on the days Weeks takes off? Gonzalez has such a great reputation defensively at SS that you have to figure he would be the better option on those days but would starting Segura a few times at 2B stunt his growth defensively? Either way it's a great problem to have.
  6. I like the idea of making Badenhop the long reliever and getting another 7th/8th inning guy. I'm not really sold on the Kintzler / Henderson combo. I'd prefer someone more experienced in a high leverage situation.
  7. Dempster is right handed.
  8. Losing Heckathorn is my main concern as well. I'm still bitter about losing Luetge a year ago...
  9. The Braves save about $4 mill with the trade. Hanson is entering his first year of arbitration and Walden is still pre arb for 2013.
  10. MLB.com had a nice list of the better players available in this years draft - http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/?partnerId=aw-5555321754083630907-996#list=rule5 Anyone appeal to you guys? Josh Fields and a couple of the RH bats caught my eye.
  11. Ditto. I really have no interest in dealing what may actually be our best pitching prospect for a 7th or 8th inning guy. I would struggle trading him even if Walden were to be our closer. Walden was traded to Atlanta, but what about the year Jungmann had in A+ ball last year was so impressive, especially given he was a 22 year old, not a kid out of high school? I asked Jim Callis about Jungmann earlier today. Here's what he said. Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisBA Came on in second half, still think he can be a No. 3. @wiscosportsnut: Thoughts on Taylor Jungmann after his debut in A+ ball? #Brewers
  12. He's getting that over the next 2 years. $5.5M in 2013 and an option for $6M in 2014.
  13. I'd be all for a Floyd trade if it included Matt Thornton.
  14. No way I trade Taylor Jungmann for Jordan Walden. I realize some people are down on Jungmann for the lack of K's but this is going overboard. Giving up a potential 200 inning horse for a guy who maybe pitches 70 innings in a year is the definition of trading backwards in value.
  15. Dempster like Suppan feasted on a RH heavy lineup. All you had to do was walk prince and tear the rest of the team apart with sliders.
  16. I hope we pass on giving Dempster 3 years. That's a disaster waiting to happen. You can't justify that move with the dip in velocity and how he performed in the 2nd half. I hope Melvin turns his attention to Brandon McCarthy, Dan Haren or Shaun Marcum if we must acquire our SP through free agency. If you're gonna give out 3 or 4 years to a pitcher the only guy I might consider is Edwin Jackson but I'm far from sold on making that move as well.
  17. Those splits aren't bad for a backup SS and the 246 AB's he had a year ago were the most he's had in his career by a very wide margin. He showed he has legitimate power against LHP knocking out 6 HRs in 89 ABs a year ago. I'm all for finding a LH or switch hitting backup middle infielder but the market isn't exactly flush with those options. You have Cesar Izturis and Stephen Drew who's looking for a starting job. I can understand the rationale behind the moves you want but the problem with finding another Corner IF/OF backup RH bat is that they would be in direct competition with Gamel and would be buried behind 3 of the best RH bats in the league. Gamel would have the 1st crack at playing simply because of being a LH hitter so It doesn't seem like a situation that many guys would be signing up for.
  18. Ransom was so terrible: quite respectable in the field but completely worthless with the bat outside of a bit of pop. Striking out nearly 50% of his Brewers ABs and batting well below .200 = a good idea? I'm not sure it's a good idea at all even if 10 better/affordable options sign elsewhere. Heck, I'd still take Bianchi over Ransom every day of the week and I'm NOT in love with Bianchi being on the 2013 roster. I'm not saying send him up there and play everyday but when you compare him to our previous backup SS's (Izturiz and a broken down Counsell) he isn't that bad of an option. He at least has some redeeming qualities with his ability to hit LHP. .195/.297/.327/.624 vs RHP .264/.340/.563/.903 vs LHP I struggle to find anything Bianchi brings to the table besides playing for cheap.
  19. Bringing back Ransom as the backup SS is a really good idea JB. He's pretty much useless against RHP but he can provide some thunder against LHP off the bench. His numbers in Milwaukee weren't that great but it was mainly because we were forced to play him almost everyday with the limited options we had. If Aoki struggled against LHP the Brewers could get creative getting Ransoms bat into the lineup by moving Ramirez to 1st and Hart back to RF. Plus they would still have the flexibility to go out and get someone decent against RHP to back Weeks up.
  20. Ok? Is there some sort of Sabermetrics equation here that makes you see a sub 4.00 ERA coming from this guy? Let's see, he was drafted in the 30th round 10 years ago. He was 6-11 with a 5+ ERA on a very good Texas team. His last win came on August 4th. Career record of 39-44 with a 4.81 ERA and 1.4178 Whip. This signing makes the Cubs GM look smart?!? I'm not seeing it. Theres no sabermetrics equation involved. The way Feldman pitched a year ago suggested he should have had an ERA in the 3.8's instead of the low 5's. Its highly doubtful he continues to have a 61% strand rate going forward so his ERA should come back down alot closer to what his peripherals suggest. Greinke had a similar problem in 2011 and last year the luck evened out and his ERA was much more reflective of how he really pitched. Lohse - 3.51 FIP 3.96 xFIP Sanchez - 3.53 FIP 3.60 xFIP Dempster - 3.69 FIP 3.77 xFIP McCarthy - 3.76 FIP 4.23 xFIP Feldman - 3.81 FIP 3.87 xFIP Jackson - 3.85 FIP 3.79 xFIP Kuroda - 3.86 FIP 3.67 xFIP Saunders - 4.08 FIP 4.25 xFIP Marcum - 4.10 FIP 4.21 xFIP Haren - 4.24 FIP 4.00 xFIP Liriano - 4.34 FIP 4.14 xFIP Guthrie - 5.10 FIP 4.75 xFIP
  21. Link please. I would like to know the source of the quote saying that the Brewers will triple their local TV revenue. With all the back and forth over the last couple years I want to know who the information was attributed to. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/01/sports/baseball/mark-attanasio-goes-all-in-on-the-brewers.html?pagewanted=all
  22. Very underrated pickup by the Cubs. I wouldn't be shocked if he put up a sub 4.00 ERA like Paul Maholm did a year ago. I can't stand the Cubs having a smart GM. It's bad news for Milwaukee going forward.
  23. I wouldn't consider that move unless we decided to go into all out rebuilding mode. I just can't see how you would give up your best SP on a team that is a contender for a prospect who would be blocked. To make room for Myers you would have to make other trades and soon or later you've killed any chance you have of competing this year.
  24. I love the versatility and insurance Wigginton would bring to the team but the only problem seems to be that he plays the same positions as Gamel which would prevent us from getting a better backup for Rickie Weeks. People are concerned about Aoki against LHP (and I understand that reasoning) but is Aoki's .322 OBP vs LHP more concerning than Weeks's .309 OBP against RHP? If you can trust Wigginton to start at 2B if Weeks struggles again then this is a perfect move. However if you don't have that faith in Wigginton's defense then it elevates Bianchi's role which is something I would be very concerned about. My ideal scenario would be trade Gamel for a setup reliever and replace him with Wigginton and then compliment that move with signing Adam Kennedy who had a .361 OBP vs RHP a year ago. Those two signings would alleviate my two biggest concerns for our bench (other than Segura's backup) and our bullpen would even improve in the process.
