    Brewers losing yet another of Uecker's #2 men? Have to assume this has legs if the VP of communications is making statements on it. This honestly wouldn't upset me much. Joe Block seems like a nice enough guy, and while he's improved over his time here I've always found his calls pretty bland and unexciting. Wouldn't hurt nearly as much as losing Jim Powell.

    If the Brewers want to rebrand themselves, they need only reference the Blue Jays 2012 rebrand. Bring back a classic with some tweaks to update it. Perfection.

    I would have the same allegiances I have for the NHL: Even though I like the sport, I don't really care about any team in particular and therefore don't watch it very often. And if you made me choose a favorite team, it would be whoever is playing Chicago.

    I've posted it before - there were some great moments from that team that I'll always remember fondly, including all of 2011. But I don't know that I'll ever experience a more magical game/atmosphere/moment as a Brewers fan than the Wild Card clincher in 2008. Even a World Series championship may not feel the same because it wouldn't have the same buildup, an entire lifetime of anticipation after expecting nothing but failure. It was absolutely surreal, an entire generation of fans (myself included) had never even been alive for a Brewers playoff berth, and could hardly remember them being even respectable. The idea of the Brewers in the playoffs was like a fantasy. It felt wrong. Unrealistic. I hung on every pitch, both in Milwaukee and in New York. The crowd was electric, the atmosphere tense, with the roof closed the stadium was as loud as I've ever heard it. I've never been so excited for a bases-loaded walk in my life. Was at a TV watching the Mets game when...Wes Helms goes deep to take the lead??? Could this actually be happening? And when the ball left Braun's bat in the 8th...I lost it. More than I ever have before or since, including Morgan's walkoff. Everyone lost it. From my vantage point you could tell the ball was gone before it left the infield. I didn't even watch it land. The Brewers are going to the PLAYOFFS?!?! I didn't think it was even possible. I still get chills thinking about that day. Awesome.

    Any player is always available for the right price... If the Angels were offered DeGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, Harvey, Nimmo and Conforto for Mike Trout, would they say no because Trout is a franchise player, and is "untouchable"? No way. Obviously the Mets would never do that, but illustrates the point that there is no such thing as untouchable, just "extremely unlikely to be traded for anything that anyone would actually offer."

    My guess is that for any of these guys, any job that doesn't have the title of "general manager" is a stepping stone job in their minds - whether it's in Milwaukee, Chicago, or New York. If these guys perform well enough to warrant a promotion to the next level, I'll be thrilled. Obviously time will tell, but a very encouraging direction being pursued by the franchise at this point.

    I've said it before about what's wrong with the college football system. This is sports, and as counter intuitive as it may sound, sports are not about which team is best. Sports are about putting a competition forth, and letting the teams compete until a winner is crowned, whether that team is the best or not. That's the beauty of it, there shouldn't be subjectivity, only results. I don't love the 1-game play-in and think this could be a bit more fair (like a 3-game series), but that's the competition set forth, and every team has known it since day one. The Cubs and Pirates both knew they had to win the division in order to avoid the wild card game, and they didn't. Tough. Should the Pirates be a #1 seed on the opposite side of the bracket than the Cardinals because they have the 2nd best record in baseball? Who's to say the Pirates would have a better record playing an AL schedule? Or than the Dodgers if they had played their schedule? Not all schedules are created equal - even if you think one is clearly tougher than another, it's still to some degree subjective. And before you say the NL Central was better than the West, remember the Pirates were 9-10 against the Brewers and 8-11 against the Reds this year... Yes, the Pirates and Cubs are probably better than a number of teams that got a better draw for the playoffs, but those are the breaks. It's not about who's better, it's about what's earned, and they earned wild card berths, nothing more and nothing less.

    1. Bring back the mug. How has this not been done? What is the reason they won't do it? Are they afraid to glorify beer at Miller Park for the team named after beer? Given where Bernie's landing is, it seems it would even be pretty easy to build one out there. 2. Something needs to be done about the shadows during day games. They are awful, makes games really difficult to watch both at the game and on TV, and I'm sure the players hate them.

    Phillips is obviously the headliner of the trade, but I feel like many are not giving Santana his due. I'm no minor league prospect expert, but he's hit at every level of the minors, this year posting a line of .320/.426/.582/1.008 at AAA. Wow. Yes he strikes out a lot, but he also clearly knows how to take a walk. Plus he's 22. This guy is no throw in, we got 2 studs out of this deal. If either of the pitchers becomes a major league contributor this could be an absolute haul.

    Have seen a few people post this, and if you truly believe it to be true, I have a hard time seeing how you can't be happy with the trade. TJ surgery is a much smaller deal than it once was, and it's a classic buy low/sell high scenario. I love Carlos, but his value is at an all time high (actually last year would've been higher), and you've traded him for a guy with upside that would've been too high for Gomez to net in a trade without a bit of injury risk. And oh yeah, another once-top-prospect who is still young with much potential. Is it a risk? Of course. But there's reasonable potential for a big return. I'm no expert on prospects, but seems like a pretty solid deal to me.

    This. My biggest beef with DM (or maybe I should say MA) over the years has been their inability to sell high on players, leaving us with numerous instances of veterans on the roster with declining performance to go with large contracts. I understand people wanting to keep Gomez, Lucroy, or even Parra because they have value. But you can't look at them in a vacuum - as it seem the Brewers always do. You also have to consider their likely decline as they age (particularly Lucroy, an almost 30-year old catcher), and the context of the major league team as a whole. Are Parra, Gomez, or Lucroy going to be significant contributors to a World Series, or even solid playoff caliber Milwaukee Brewers team? Unless you think the team as currently constructed fits that bill in the next 1-2 years, the answer is likely no. So why keep them? I love Lucroy and Gomez, but the prospects they could return have greater value to the franchise than their future contributions/contracts, IMHO. That's why I hope the Brewers sell and sell big.

    Or his numbers slowly decline as a near-30 catcher...as most do. Lucroy's value will almost certainly not be higher in the future than it is right now. That's why you trade him now, maybe in the offseason, but no later than that unless you think we're one of the best 4-5 teams in the NL next year, not just "we can make the playoffs if everything goes right." Part of the reason the Brewers are in their current situation is they are unwilling to trade players at their peak value, and instead hold on to them until they get less, and often little to nothing in return (McGehee, Ramirez, Lohse, Gallardo, etc)

    This. Making trades to put your club over the top does not have to mean years of futility to follow. The Brewers have been poorly managed SINCE the CC/Greinke/Marcum trades, not as a result of them. They have run valuable pieces into the ground until any value they once had is decreased or gone, including signing marginal free agents to big deals and holding on to them until those deals made them untradeable. When they traded Greinke away in 2012, it was clear the team was no longer an elite club like they were in 2011 and they were downtrending. That was the time to decide to restock, and if they had we may have had a year or two of mediocrity and been on the upswing by now. Instead we've slapped lipstick on a pig for years and the franchise is now an utter mess, a terrible product on the field and a poor farm system behind it. But, like the above poster said, even the best strategies are probably for naught if you can't draft and develop players.

    This. There is not a single player on this team that will be a part of a World Series Champion Milwaukee Brewers team. And outside of the young ones just coming up and under team control for years at an affordable rate, very few will realistically be a part of a good Brewers team ever again. Seriously, can you picture a way to retool the roster such that Lucroy will ever play on another good Brewers team before his talents inevitably deteriorate? That said, it is this team's management style to hold on to players until they are devoid of most value they once had and get little to nothing in return, so I'm not holding my breath.

    Glad we held on to Ramirez until he has completely lost any trade value he ever had. But who could've seen this coming from an aging, frequently injured, 36 year-old player who's OPS has dropped each of the past 3 seasons?

    "New" standard unless you're referring to the NFL replay system. Or NBA. Or NCAA basketball. Or NCAA football. Or...MLB after the first month of replay. Instant replay would be great if the whole "indisputable" thing actually meant anything. But it doesn't. In any sport. Much like the "time limit" to review the replay. Would love to see some kind of study that could compare how many games, actual wins and losses over an entire season, are changed with replay. My guess is the reality of "getting it right" isn't worth the time they spend trying to do it. Plus, that assumes instant replay always gets it right, which it doesn't.

    By selling earlier, the team who receives our player get more starts, more at bats, more innings pitched, essentially more wins (or WAR). Because of this, the Brewers could and should be able to demand more of a return. Also gives them leverage to wait if they aren't getting a worthy offer as the deadline isn't forcing their feet to the fire.

    This is why many here have bemoaned the team's strategy of "reload" year after year. It's not just about bad contracts for aging veterans and giving up draft picks. It's also about not selling high on the trade value of your decent players. After 2012 went to crap and we traded Greinke, the organization should've realized the window was closed and it was time to move on. The rebuild would've been much less painful then than it will be now.
