  1. The pictures of Sheets and Zambrano in the Matchup section are awesome.
  2. I would guess Roberts or Randy Winn might well be picked up by the Crew in late July. As a backup? I think they're plenty happy with Gross, Gwynn and maybe Kapler when they have three starting, non-platoon outfielders. I could see Roberts coming here if an injury occurred, but if things go according to plan, I think the Brewers would be looking for a pitcher more than a backup outfielder.
  3. Any other notable new entrance songs for Brewers this year that anyone who was at the game noticed?
  4. They offered him in part of a deal to try to get Gagne last year, so they're definitely going to be keeping their options open.
  5. It's not really a big deal- it's not going to change anything in terms of runs scored but that being said, I don't get it. It seems like Ned just has to tinker and change things all the time or he feels like he isn't doing enough.
  6. Because he'll be a platoon partner, and Gross will probably get a few starts anyway, I don't think that there's enough difference in offensive production to say that it is stupid to start Gwynn. That said, I think that at best he's a solid fourth outfielder and pinch-hitter. If someone wants to give up a good pitching prospect or two for him at the deadline, I'm all for it.
  7. I think Doug is a fine general manager, but it's fair to point out that he has gotten pretty much dominated in his last two trades. Davis, Eveland, Krynzel for--> Estrada, Vargas, Acquino (Mota) Inman, Thatcher, Garrison ---> Linebrink The only way I would ever consider getting rid of Melvin is if Jack Z were to get the job.
  8. I'm pretty sure that Choate is on the DL with a broken hand. He hit it on Matt LaPorta's helmet about 2 weeks ago. EDIT I'm very sure that Choate is on the DL with a broken hand. He hit it on Matt LaPorta's helmet about 2 weeks ago. From Brewers.com: 3/20/08 Randy Choate Placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left hand.
  9. The arguement frequently used on Fire Joe Morgan is probably the best way to 'dispute' clutch hitting. Basically, a hitter is trying as hard as possible to get a hit in any particular situation. It's not like Jeter tries harder to get a hit in the late innings than A-Rod. The best "clutch hitters" are also the "best hitters". I remember an arguement in the debate between Counsell and Cirillo- who would have been better as a utility/pinch hitter last year. Someone said that Cirillo was clutch and Counsell wasn't. Cirillo 06: .319/ .369/ .414 Counsell 07: .220/ .323 /.309

  12. The Bucks 40th Anniversary Team game is tonight, and I assume they're showing that instead.
  13. I guess I am not following what you are trying to say here I think the point is that Gwynn had a VORP of basically 0 last year, and he's the one that's getting the at-bats this year over Gross. It wasn't really trying to make a point about last year's team, but about this year's team. Just to clear that up.
  14. Dempster I think the switch from a reliever to starter is more difficult than starter to reliever. The closer mind-set is just so much different. I guess Braden Looper did a good job making the switch last year- he sacrificed velocity for location and tried to keep pitch counts down- but he's more of an exception. I think they're going to get from Dempster what we got from Vargas last year, except with a slightly better ERA. He'll walk plenty and strike out plenty, and he'll probably have his share of short starts- and the increase in innings could cause him to hit the DL for a bit.
  15. They did boo him last year at Wrigley...
  16. hill is really their #3, they just put him 4th to split the lefties. Yeah, I just think Dempster and Suppan are a better comp. You could split it up any way you want.
  17. We've seen a flurry of season previews by other blogs and sites over the past few weeks. The vast majority of them pick the Cubs, which is to be expected. Most, however, cite the fact that their rotation is one of the best in the NL and dismiss the Brewer rotation without giving it any thought. So the question is, if you could swap our top 6 pitchers with their top 6 (with personal like/disliking aside), would you do it? I don't think I would. Sheets --- Zambrano Gallardo---Lilly Suppan---Dempster Villanueva---Hill Bush---Marquis Parra---Lieber I think it's a heck of a lot closer than most national observers think. While their rotation is certainly more durable, ours has plenty more potential. Factor in the probable regression from Lilly- like Bronson Arroyo last year- and we might even come out on top. If you could switch starting pitchers, would you? I wouldn't.
  18. Is the "Jenkins Jungle" sign still up in left?
  19. If you bring in a LHP to face them, you have to remove that pitcher for Braun. (As Braun kills LHP) They're still going to bring in lefties to face Fielder. Why give them two lefties to go after? It doesn't change the fact that they'll take lefties out for Braun. For the life of me I can't figure out why, if he's so set on batting Gwynn second, he wouldn't just hit Braun 3rd. Though I don't believe in the 'running more' theory, any loss in stolen bases from Braun would be made up by the fact that Cameron can steal more.
  20. Did Cappy injure himself in ST, or was the need for TJ surgery discovered due to his ineffectiveness? I think it was somewhat of a combination, if that makes any sense. He did feel something snap during spring training, but that was probably "the straw that broke the camel's back", for lack of a better figure of speech.

  22. Suppan's average innings per start was substantially better than Vargas's last year. So he taxes the bullpen less, and didn't miss any starts due to injury. Also: Vargas 2007 ERA: 5.09 ERA+: 88 Suppan 2007 ERA: 4.67 ERA+: 97 It'd be tough for me to understand an arguement that Vargas is anywhere near Suppan in value.
  23. Not sure about when it hits newsstands. I got it as well. The article is on the '05 draft, but it entirely focuses on Tulowitzki. Braun got about a page in a section that went through all the stars that came from the draft. But just when I think that a national media source is going to buck the trend and focus on a few good smaller-market guys, I find a big article on the draft battle between the Yankees and Red Sox. Oh well, at least our guy is on the cover. And, as we already know, they picked the Reds to finish second to the Cubs. *sigh*.
  24. I remember watching Floyd with the Phillies. He has a crazy-breaking curve, but he kept bouncing it on home plate.
  25. I think we all agree, but that might not have been an option. Doug + Ned, to their credit, determined that Vargas was not good enough to be in the rotation. And (speculation alert) he might have told them he didn't want to go to the pen and would rather be traded. Otherwise, they might have just realized that $3 million is plenty to pay a long reliever. I'd rather have Vargas than McClung as well, but it's possible that Vargas wasn't even an option as a reliever.
