  1. why don't we just make torres the closer? Gagne has no value if he is not closing. Torres probably has more value, in my opinion, if he is used in important situations in the seventh or eighth inning. And in response to "it's about time for a new closer", who would you like to get? Sure, it seems simple to just trade for Francisco Rodriguez or Joe Nathan. It doesn't happen. I'd also like to have better starters and better defense and better offense. You can't reasonably expect anyone to pitch a perfect inning every time out. If there was an easy way to upgrade, It should definitely be done. But there just isn't, and I don't think you're going to find any better "closer" available right now. He's starting to sound like t-bow here. I think we trade him and see what we can get, move Stetter to the closer role and continue from there. Maybe Stetter can be a little B.J. Ryan-esque and get it done (minus the arm injury). That's a pretty knee-jerk reaction. Basing a decision on 5 innings of Stetter- who, by the way, I do like- would be terrible management. Simply put, every member of the bullpen has an important role and you can't just expect an upgrade if you think one might be needed. I think Gagne just becomes a scape-goat for those who don't want to dig deep enough to find what the problems really are.
  2. I'd just like to point out that the 2006 St. Louis Cardinals won a World Series with an 83-79 regular season record and a rotation that included Chris Carpenter, Anthony Reyes, Jeff Weaver, and Suppan. This team will face an uphill struggle to get to the playoffs, of course. But lets take it easy, folks, they're not that bad off yet.
  3. Don't jump of a building, folks. The offense is one of the top 3 or 4 in the National League and there are 3 stud prospects who should be ready to contribute in the major by next year. What if the Brewers trade for a legitimate starter like AJ Burnett or Joe Blanton at the deadline, Sheets stays healthy, Suppan, Parra, and Villanueva get hot and they make they playoffs? I'm not too optimistic, but jeepers, it is May.
  4. Yeah, it's interesting to think about, but we've gotten great production so far out of centerfield. The Kapler, Gwynn, and Gross trifectum produced a 294/342/451 line, and Cameron has 3 homers since returning. And really, adding another outfielder and $10 million in payroll would have been foolish when LaPorta is tearing up AA.
  5. I hate how Gagne is becoming such a scapegoat for people who don't follow the Brewers too closely. The results haven't been great, but he's been fine in my opinion. People act like they willingly chose Gagne over Cordero. And besides, who would they rather have right now? Octavio Dotel? And, in response to the original question, he is getting squeezed a bit.
  6. MLB doesn't allow trading of draft picks. The post was referring to letting him walk and picking up the compensation draft picks.
  7. Compare the Brewers to the Phillies for a second. Both offenses have plenty of power. Howard's production is comparable to Fielder's, and Utley's is similar to Braun's, and Burrel's is similar to Hart's . The Phillies might have a slight edge in offensive production this year overall, but it should be pretty close. Hamels--- Sheets Myers--- Suppan Kendrick--- Villanueva Moyer--- Parra Eaton--- Bush Brad Lidge, Tom Gordon, JC Romero, and Ryan Madson are their primary bullpen guys. Even without Gallardo, I'd say the Brewers are pretty close to the Phillies. Would you write the Phillies off right now? I'm not trying to say the Brewers are going to win 100 games here, but lets keep things in perspective.
  8. Trading Turnbow for Capellan would make me smile. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Ben's in the Indy Racing League now? I don't think that necessarily means we have to sign Sheets to an extension, but there is zero chance our starting rotation next year is better than our rotation this year (had Gallardo not been injured). That, to me is why the Gallardo injury stings as bad as it does. Gallardo's injury obviously sucks. However, I disagree that there is 0 chance the rotation is better. By the end of the year, LaPorta, Gamel, and Escobar will likely be ready to play in the majors, and considering there will probably only be one position available, I think a trade of at least one of the three or one of our regulars is likely. Say a trade like that brought back a #2 starter... and then there is the possibility of re-signing Sheets. So I don't think it's guaranteed next year's rotation will be worse.
  10. AJ Burnett could be available as a 1-year rental, and Joe Blanton has obviously been available. Either could be potential targets in a trade involving a few young hitters like Mat Gamel.
  11. Would he be someone who could be bumped to AAA to see how he pitches up there? That rotation is getting pretty packed now. Bush, Narveson, Jackson, DeFelice, Gardner occasionally, and then Weaver once he is ready.
  12. I am curious if anybody has an update on how his defense has progressed. Errors are about the only thing I can use to measure that because I can't watch him play every day, and he had 5 errors in their first 20 games or so- a little better- before he imploded the other night for three errors, all fielding I think.
  13. Moneyball Part of which, coincidentally, focuses on finding players that don't have physical attributes that are considered prototypical but evaluating a player based on his statistics. Ramlow's seem to be pretty good.
  14. I guess the question now become if sheets does pitch against the cubs do you limit his pitch count or innings? Sheets threw over 110 pitches in the two starts before his injury. I think it's irresponsible to be running him out there that long, and the extended outings almost certainly contributed to his arm soreness. I'd prefer that they not let him go over about 105.
  15. I think Braun might be a guy that does have the green light though. This means that Ned directly allows him to try to steal third with two outs.
  16. 3. Trade for a veteran 3B I heavily doubt that you can find a third basemen who is capable of putting up better numbers than Branyan without giving up anything of value. And Branyan is almost certainly more valuable than Nunez.
  17. For those who wonder, Riske was being saved for the 10th inning, according to Yost after the game.
  18. In his post-game press conference, Ned said the following things: -Riske was being saved for the 10th inning -Turnbow needed to pitch in a close game to get confidence -Turnbow also needed to pitch because everyone was tired -Gagne was going to pitch in a save situation Why do we put up with this?
  19. Again, pitching Gagne four days in a row- especially when the Reds have seen him twice already- is not putting the team or player in a position to succeed.
  20. http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/04/20/brewers-send-dillon-down.aspx Joe Dillon has been optioned to AAA, giving the Brewers... 14 pitchers? Wow.
  21. So it less than 4 hours till game time. What the heck is going on? Perhaps waiting to see how Ben feels this morning? In their defense, it would probably be beneficial to not let the Reds know who is starting until as late as possible. Regardless, everything I've read lists the matchup as Gallardo against Harang.
  22. I kind of like it, and it definitely has occurred to me that a six-man rotation might be a good idea for a little while at least. I was kinda upset with Ned for overextending Sheets in back-to-back starts with over 110 pitches. As you mentioned, it would hurt to get less days of Sheets but I'm always a proponent of new ideas that seem a little crazy at first. There are 13 pitchers on the staff now, so with Gallardo activated there will still be 13, which would keep right number of pitchers, and as previously mentioned, a starter could be used in relief like the Yankees did a few times last year. It's just a thought that is a decent idea. Not a slam dunk or anything, just something to throw out there.
  23. Does anyone remember on opening day when Zambrano left with forearm cramps? Because of his "tough" reputation, it's fine. It occurred to me while watching that game that if that had been Sheets coming out of the game with cramps, there would have been outrage and probably rioting. When Sheets has to come out of a game, people jump to conclusions so fast. It's obviously not good news, but stuff like this happens.
