  1. Greinke and Harden have value, but they are both in their 4th year and have very serious injury concerns. Harden, yes, but Greinke? He has been placed on the DL once in his major league career, and that was for his depression/social issues.
  2. a package of Villanueva, Gillespie, Nelson/Gwynn, and another guy (Cain?) may be enough to pry away a Harden or Greinke. Greinke has been discussed over here. I've been a huge proponent of trying to get him. However, there is no way that that package could get Greinke. The kinda consensus is that it would take LaPorta or Gamel, then Salome (or maybe Escobar), and maybe two of the guys you mentioned- Gwynn, Cain, Nelson, etc. Greinke is a 24 year old stud with great stuff. Harden has less value on the market, but I don't think the A's are very motivated to trade him right now.
  3. I think a package would have to be centered around LaPorta. I think this, from the previous page of this thread, is pretty realistic (from Bnowell4evr): LaPorta Escobar or Salome Then 2 of any of these prospects: Gillespie, Cain, Brantley, Gwynn, Irribarren, Nelson, Lucroy, Brewer, Braddock or the Lefties in AAA and AA for Greinke and relief pitcher Except I think Brantley is regarded higher than any of the guys in the third line there, so I would exclude him.
  4. Anyone who trades for Greinke must assess his mental health status. It's a very valid concern, but I think the risk of trading for Greinke is less than the risk of trading for a permanently injured guy like Rich Harden or someone like Sabathia who's only going to be here for a few months. Greinke has the ace-like stuff, great numbers this year and last year, he's young, not ridiculously expensive, and is under control for 2 1/2 years. If we're going to give up LaPorta for a pitcher at the deadline, Greinke is the guy I want. Here's a story from Josh Kalk of THT on Greinke. He uses Pitch F/X to analyze his stuff and concludes that Greinke's stuff is ace-like.
  5. and while he probably isn't as good as CC I'm not so sure, and the age and the ability to keep him for two more years really swings it in Greinke's favor. ERA+ of 127+125 the last two years for Greinke with a WHIP of about 1.25 Sabathia was around 100 ERA+ for a while and then jumped to about 140 ERA+ for the past two years, and now he's back down to about 103 ERA+ next year. His WHIP also jumped over a tenth of a runner this year. Bottom line is, I'd be very willing to give up a few very top prospects for two and a half years of Greinke. For a half a season of Sabathia, who I don't even think is as good as Greinke, I wouldn't be willing to give up any of the Huntsville 4, whereas I'd be tempted to give up two of them for Greinke.
  6. Maybe he is being nice to the Brewers in saying 'he will test the market', instead of saying 'I'll have a better chance of making the playoffs with a different team'. Baseball Prospectus Postseason Odds as of right now, including the Brewers and other teams that Sheets has been rumored to go to after the season: Brewers 42.76930 Yankees 13.14997 Mets 18.31048 Braves 24.21300 Red Sox 86.83084 Astros 1.62817 The Brewers are second on that list, behind the Red Sox. With Yovani Gallardo back next year and every position player but Cameron under contract, I think Ben would realize that the Brewers are a very good team to try to go to the playoffs with.
  7. About John Heyman's mention of the Huntsville lineup there: -It's interesting he'd list LaPorta as a first basemen -"Salome Angel"... wow. You don't see someone just flip a guy's name around too often. If Angel saw that, he must be pretty confused.
  8. Nice to see Josh Butler finally have a decent outing- 5 2/3 innings, 2 ER, but 8 strikeouts and no walks.
  9. way to hard of a time signing free agents. What about trading? Could you imagine a deadline deal that sends Bill Hall and Tony Gwynn Jr. for a Japanese relief pitcher?
  10. Opinions on Brad Schreiber, Phil's brother? Not really important correction, bk: Phil and Brad are first cousins. The FVA finally has their 2008 stats available. Here's the hitting portion, note that it's just the regular season. Brad actually hit three more homers in the playoffs, including two at Fox Cities Stadium where the Mariner's low A Timber Rattlers play. I'm not sure on the final batting average number, but it was higher than .534 once the playoffs are factored in as well, I think it was over .600. Then, here are the FVA pitching leaders. Brad led the conference with a .93 ERA, about a half a run ahead of Phil, who was third (Bryce Bellin is second, he's only going to be a junior next year). He had a 4-1 record... the only loss was a pitcher's duel against Phil and Kaukauna, I think the final was 2-1. Brad's other numbers were 32 Ks and 11 walks in 30 innings with 22 hits allowed. He was throwing in the high 80s at the State tournament. By the way, I am a student at Kimberly and I know Brad well, so I'm obviously biased, but he's good and the numbers above will back that up. He doesn't have any college plans in store as of yet, so it should be an interesting year next year.
  11. Good to see Matt LaPorta in the lineup after his wall collision tonight. He's playing at first base and is 2-2 with a single and double. Also, Caleb Gindl having a big day; 3-5 with two doubles.
  12. We get frustrated that bombs hit to center aren't homers but little pop-ups down the left-field line get out. The park seems to balance those out, but I think it kinda defeats the purpose of hitting the ball far to have such an awkward alignment. I think it brings luck into play more than it should and I don't think that's a good thing. So there aren't really more homers, but there are more cheap homers and more blasts to center that should be homers.
  13. Also, the Astro in-park PA man is kinda unique but tends to drive me insane. If you've ever paid attention to it, you know exactly what I'm talking about... and it's hard to write how he introduces players. That and the train whistle after every hit. The train itself is cool but that noise is annoying.
  14. Because if they had a normal CF witht hat short porch, they would give up more HRs than any other park in the league I see what you thought I meant there, but I was trying to say that a bit more balance is in order. Here's my point- the unique left field arrangement and the centerfield hill are fine by me, but the leftfield fence should be longer and centerfield should be closer in. Some people don't like the park's layout, but I just have a problem with the dimensions. Does that make sense?
  15. I don't mind the quirky parks so much- the hill in center is kinda neat- but it seems counterproductive to have those extremes. A guy can hit a 420 foot fly ball to dead center and have it caught, while Jason Kendall can serve one into the corner there like he did last night. That park would drive me crazy if I was a fan of the Astros. So, really, I don't mind the cheap homers but why have the short porch and then the huge centerfield?
  16. Too bad Jeffress couldn't finish up a nice performance, he winds up giving up 3 runs in 4 1/3 but strikes out 10. Edit: In response to Homer, it might have had to do with pitch count but he did give up 3 hits in the fifth before getting pulled.
  17. Name the next best 2B to take over for Weeks that's in the minors.... Taylor Green is playing mostly at 3rd at Brevard County, but he's considered an above-average second basemen and is learning third to increase his verstatility. He's putting up an impressive 0.316 0.404 0.465 0.869 line. And as already mentioned, Mike Bell is a big-time sleeper who gets overlooked a lot. For the record I think Weeks will be fine, but there are options in the minor league system.
  18. You can pinch hit twice in the same at bat; the only issue is emptying your bench. I recall opening day 2006, where Ned pinch-hit Gabe Gross in the seventh inning and then put in Cirillo for him when the made a pitching change. Cirillo lines a base hit that gets the eventual winning run.
  19. I like the idea being thrown around here, with one minor revision- have Hernan be the 'loose platoon' guy against tough righties at second. I've never seen anyone say that Irabarren is capable of playing short, and Ned has to get his 1 Counsell for Hardy day in there every week. I don't need 2 days of Counsell every week, thank you.
  20. Weeks OBP: .325 Kendall OBP: .324 I like what Kendall brings to the table defensively, but he's living off a hot 2 weeks to start the season. His hitting has been pretty bad- OPS+ of 72.
  21. Huntsville wins it, 8-6! Big victory to go 1 game up in the standings. Bateman gets a K to end it.
  22. You shoot the moon... This is troubling. He seems to be developing a tendency to mix up common phrases and say goofy things that don't make sense. I remember this quote from a few days ago... Mota didn't walk the ballpark. What?
  23. 30 year old LOOGY I wouldn't advocate using him as a full inning-guy all the time, but Taschner's career splits actually aren't that bad. OPS against vRH: .742 OPS against vLH: .719 For comparison's sake, here's Shouse: OPS against vRH: .843 OPS against vLH: .598
  24. I'm surprised no one pointed out this: Josh Kalk's Intentional Walk Tool It gives you a value of an intentional walk in any situation.
  25. This kinda reminds me of in baseball video games when I would have a closer and if I was up 4 runs in the eighth, I'd bring in a crappy guy to throw one down the pipe and let them hit it out so I could rack up a save with my guy in the ninth inning. Unfortunately for Ned, the Brewers, and us, this isn't video game baseball.
