  1. Of the MLB first timers, Escobar is probably more likely than Gamel to get a start considering his defense isn't a liability. Probably won't happen for any of them until wins/losses don't matter any more.
  2. I was also thinking about signing up for the Cub's playoff ticket lottery. If they end up playing the brewers (NLCS), I can go to the game. If they end up playing someone else, I can sell them for a hefty profit to some sap cubs fan. Anyone else with me on this? Lets make a presence at Wrigley in October. Update I just registered for the Cubs playoff ticket lottery... It'll feel good if I'm selected, thereby leaving one less cubs fan out of the stadium to watch the game at home.
  3. If only we were able to get 6 expansion teams to have 6 divisions of 6 teams. Then you have 18 games against each division opponent (90 games) and 6 games against each non-division opponent in the league (72 games) which comes to 162 games without any inter-league games. If you really want interleague games, you can take away 6 games from each division opponent and instead have 3 games against 10 interleague teams (30 games). Trouble is trying to find 6 teams to join the league... which cities don't have baseball... New Orleans, Charlotte, Portland, Salt Lake City, Buffalo, Dallas.
  4. anyone know if 9-pack holders can enter?
  5. Do you know if this will be done immediately before the game, during warmups/batting practice? I'm going to the game, so I'm wondering if fans can watch part of his sim game after the gates open.
  6. If they're worried about delays with checking people, I saw a pretty good system when I went the series in Denver last June. They had an express lane for fans with no carry-ins. The normal line was backed up, and the express lane had no one in it. Seemed to work well.
  7. I'm looking for 4 tickets to the Sept 7th game against the Padres. I have some family members coming into town and we were hoping to go to the game which only has standing room and single seat tickets available. I thought I'd try bf.net before going to ebay. I'd could even kick a Corey Hart bobblehead or two your way if desired.
  8. Ahhhh I see. You are right, that would force interleague all year long then. I suppose that also explains why expansion teams are always added in pairs. I meant to type 15 teams BTW, just didn't realize that they need an even number to all play at the same time..... duh. (edit: long nested quote --1992)
  9. Maybe I'm missing something, but why couldn't you still have interleague games all in May and June like it is now only with 16 teams in each league? I don't care all that much if we play more games in wrigley (or wherever) because we'll still always have 81 games at home no matter what. What bugs me most is that we're competing against 5 other teams for the division instead of 4 like everyone else (or 3 in the AL West). This is not as big a deal as it used to be before the wildcard, but it means that there are 25% more teams that we have to have a better record than to win the divison. If having two Texas teams in the AL is a problem, you could instead send San Diego, Colorado or Arizona to the AL West and Houston to the NL West.
  10. Because someone thought it'd be a good idea to have 4 divisions with 5 teams, 1 with 6 teams and 1 with 4 teams. Most teams play the other teams in their division 18 times (9 home & 9 away) but the brewers play a few less games against each team in the division to make up for the extra team and in this case they play the cubs 2 fewer games at miller park. I'm not sure how they determine which team gets more home games though. I think the system needs to be fixed by moving an NL central team to the AL west (the Astros make the most sense). Then there would be balance between the leagues, each team can play all the division opponents the same number of games with equal home/away, and each team can play the same number of interleague games.
  11. I agree. 20 wins or more is definitely doable. If the cubs keep up the pace they have now, the division will be out of reach obviously, but with the tough schedule the cubs have coming up, its not unreasonable for the cubs to be sub-500 for the remainder of the schedule. Though of course the best way for the brewers to ensure a cubs collapse is to beat them head to head in mid & late september.
  12. The cubs play only 9 more games (out of 35) against losing teams. The brewers play 19 more games (out of 34) against losing teams.
  13. It was Sveum's fault. Not sure if you could see on TV, but I was specifically watching Sveum (from left field diamond box) and saw him wave Hardy around 2nd.
  14. wow, the ever exciting 1-2-3 double play. Don't see one of those everyday.
  15. I'm guessing you're watching on mlb gameday? Just a hunch.
  16. whew.... been 1 hour since I've exhaled!
  17. I really really really hope they keep Villy in to bat and stay in for the 8th inning.
  18. good time for the pitcher to come to the plate. Let hope that walk doesn't hurt them.
  19. I don't think it was planned strategy in this case. I think it was simply Hardy/Svuem thinking he could get to 3rd on the throw home. But with that said, I think it was a bad choice to take a chance in that situation... 1st inning with no outs and a 1 run lead. If he holds at 2nd, Durham probably still scores, and they have 3 chances to hit Hardy home from 2nd base. According to BP, the expected run difference between being on 2nd with 0 outs and being on 3rd with 0 outs is small (1.15 to 1.46) compared to the difference between man on 2nd with 0 outs and noone on with 1 out (1.15 to 0.28). So if Hardy gets to 3rd he gains the equivalent of 0.31 runs, but if he's thrown out, he loses the equivalent of 0.87 runs. That means he should have a success rate of stretching it into a triple of about 3 out of 4 to make it worth trying for the extra base. Of course if Durham would have been thrown out otherwise, then it was also a bad decision to send him home. As far was sacrificing runs for baserunners, I really don't like the idea unless you're pretty sure that the runner going home will get thrown out if you don't. Also depends on the situation. If its mid/late in the game with a lead, I don't have a problem with taking a few chances on the basepaths to add insurance runs, but if you're behind, those baserunners (and outs) are too valuable to lose haphazardly.
  20. I had a similar situation once. I had tickets in the first row of section 101 right above the visitor's bullpen. Joe Beimel of the Dodgers was nice enough to hook me up with a bag of sunflower seeds, which my friends and I proceeded to consume. Some were spit onto the ground in front of us, some went to the floor of the bullpen. I didn't think it was an issue because 1. there is the security guy (not an usher) in the bullpen that is constantly watching the crowd and didn't seem to care when a small mess of sunflower shells started to build up on the floor of the bullpen and 2. the area around the player benches were already littered with sunflower shells from the players. Finally toward the end of the game an usher politely told me to stop spitting shells into the bullpen, for which I apologized and stopped spitting shells into the bullpen. Not quite the same situation, but thought I'd share.
  21. You're not being fair to Ned Yost here. His philosophy isn't 2B-SS-LF-1B-RF-3B-CF-C no matter what. He built the lineup to be Weeks-Hardy-Braun-Fielder-Hart-Hall-Cameron-Kendall and when one of those guys is out of the line-up he will bat the replacement at the same spot. If Nix had to start for an extended period of time, Ned would probably switch the lineup around to move Nix down. Not that I condone his philosophy... I think Ned should change the lineup a bit when a replacement steps in, but its way better than the excessive tinkering he did last year... in fact I wouldn't doubt if the line-up by position strategy is a reaction to the criticism he received for the excessive tinkering he did last year.
  22. Really tough decision. The percentages some of you are throwing out about the chance of winning going down from 95% to 98.8% don't take into account the batters that are being faced. I could be wrong, but I think fangraphs simply looks at run differential combined with game situation, so their computer just saw that it was 9th inning with 2 outs and bases loaded, but not that it was Hamilton at the plate and Byrd on deck, with Balfour on the mound. In the ninth inning with a lead, the runners that are already on base really don't have an impact on the game if they're not the winning or tying run (unless they give you a chance at a double play, or if they're so slow that they keep the tying run from advancing around the bases). So intentionally walking a guy in with the bases loaded, 2 outs, and a 4-run lead really isn't all that different than intentionally walking a guy with the bases empty, 2 outs, and a 1-run lead. I don't think anyone would question the decision to put Hamilton on base in the 2nd situation (bases empty, 2 outs, 1-run lead). I think the Rays did what gave them the best chance of winning the game because if Hamilton either doubled or homered, the Rangers would have kept the momentum and would have needed only a single to tie the game if Hamilton doubled. Although if it was my decision, I probably would have pitched to Hamilton bacause of the media firestorm that would have ensued if we lost after I put the tying run on base.
  23. YES... way to go, CAM-ER-ON. Way to end the stalemate!
  24. nice call... how bout you now ask for a nice 5-run inning here?
