  1. That wasn’t a good look for Washington, but I believe Dan Snyder even said Foster wouldn’t play until his legal issues were resolved. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe there’s a tape in Foster’s case. That’s the smoking gun, in my opinion.
  2. I would agree if it weren’t for the tape. He did that much damage with his friends restraining him. What would he have done without them there?
  3. I think he’s done. Period. Tape don’t lie. Personally, I’d like to see him get a second chance after a year’s suspension but that’s not how it works anymore.
  4. I don’t view my magic number as a stack of money that I can deplete for a certain number of years in retirement, but rather an amount that can generate enough passive income to sustain my wife and I indefinitely.
  5. Suze cracks me up. She thinks everyone needs to work until 70. I loved when Kristen Wiig used to spoof her ‘Can I afford it?’ segments on SNL.
  6. I think these subjects are poor representatives of the FIRE movement, but they are representatives nonetheless. I think the author’s intention was to highlight the subjects’ missteps, not ridicule FIRE. Either that or click bait. Probably click bait. I actually thought the young couple who saved $600,000 before burning out prior to turning to 30 and the other couple where one spouse passed away at a young age were both very legitimate examples.
  7. Here’s a good article on a few folks who tried the FIRE lifestyle and had things go poorly. I salute them for trying, but there are just so many things that can go wrong in a 40+ year retirement. Nonetheless, the key for most of them would probably have been to raise their magic numbers (hindsight is 20/20). Oh, and the woman who thought she could retire at 27 and then was back living with her parents by 29 is just foolish. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/these-people-left-their-jobs-behind-to-retire-early-then-life-got-in-the-way-heres-how-they-coped-with-fire-plans-gone-wrong-2018-11-29?siteid=yhoof2&yptr=yahoo
  8. Aside from the fact that the 49ers stadium is much closer to Palo Alto than Madison, I think this is the best draw they can realistically hope for: - Power 5 Opponent - Decent Location (for fans who enjoy travel) - Network TV - December 31 (most fans will be off work) It’s not like they deserve better.
  9. I saw a bowl prediction yesterday that had Wisconsin and Stanford in the Redbox Bowl at Levi’s Stadium on December 31 to be televised on Fox.
  10. He’d always pay his share for a meal he took part in, but he’d be the last guy to volunteer to drive or buy a round. He’d chip in just often enough to avoid being labeled a free loader. He didn’t mind being labeled as cheap. Now he’s got plenty in the bank the first guy to volunteer to cover group expenses. But yeah, he’s kind of a character. Still love the guy, though.
  11. One of my best friends is very frugal (whereas I’m just frugal). He’s the closest thing to a FIRE devotee I know. He used to avoid picking up the tab so often that it became comical and a running joke among our close group of friends. Now he’s well on his way to financial independence and one of the most generous people I know.
  12. I hope to receive a small inheritance, but I won’t plan on it - too many variables. I also hope to pay for my son’s education, but will take him off the payroll immediately after he graduates. I still see leaving an inheritance to your descendants as a point of pride; however, if I do my job as a father well enough, my son will have everything he needs to be successful by the time he finishes college. I view an inheritance as a way to sustain your descendants in the event of death or disability.
  13. Despite the cons, outdoor games help attract new fans. I had a blast at Lambeau Field when Wisconsin played Ohio State in 2005 or 2006. I’m not a big fan of either team, but I would do it again in a heart beat. It was a novelty.
  14. I think I recently read the break even age on SS was 78.5. If SS is still around in the same form, I plan on taking it early because none of my male relatives have made it to 80. I might encourage my wife to delay her benefit, provided she’s still in good health at the time.
  15. Isn't the actual recommendation these days 15% not taking into consideration a potential employer match? That is only for retirement too most times I see that thrown around. Realistically you probably want to be saving an extra 5% for emergencies. You’re probably right. The point I intended to make was that you can spend your money on whatever you like (Brewers tickets, cable TV, $5 coffees, etc.) as long as you’re spending less than you earn. If your savings goals are more ambitious, spend a lot less than you earn.
  16. Yes, my wife does. We fund to the max. Whatever is left over after a year of relatively good health is rolled to what we consider our ‘retirement health care fund.’ We continue to fund to the max, regardless of balance.
  17. You can do pretty much whatever you want with 90% of your money as long as you save the remaining 10%.
  18. It counts toward our annual out-of-pocket max of $6,000, so we just treat it like any other health care expense. We’ve been fortunate to have been able to slowly build $500 in health care expenses into our monthly budget. Obviously, that’s easier said than done for some folks. And yeah, $600 is crazy, but other families with children have drawn far worse hands than us.
  19. No matter how frugal we are, we all splurge. For some people, it’s dining. For others, it’s cable. Me personally, I just spent $600 on my kid’s epi-pen.
  20. I recognize ‘50-burger’ from the context of blowout NFL games and when I searched the term, I found an Urban Dictionary entry from 2014. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=50%20Burger
  21. Do you mean $50 dinner? Because that’s a pretty reasonable date night. Otherwise, I can see how you had trouble with the FIRE lifestyle if you enjoy $500 dinners.
  22. Homer - You’re right. 10% is a reasonable projection, provided you account for alternative (more conservative) scenarios in your planning.
  23. How can you be sure the market won’t be in a trough when you want to (or are forced to) retire? Don’t get me wrong, I like equities. I’d just prefer to diversify with my non-qualified funds in case those 10% returns don’t materialize.
