  1. I won’t dismiss any other opinions because there’s merit to all of them; however, I’m fairly certain the biggest driver of inequality in our economy this past century has been the relationship between the return on capital and the growth rate of wages. Automation has placed additional value on capital at the expense of labor. Returns on capital investments have far exceeded wage growth over the last 100 years, even though historical evidence dating back hundreds of years shows the two have been tightly correlated until recently. In an effort to bring this thread full circle, let me state that if you want a secure retirement, you have to focus on converting your labor returns into capital.
  2. Financial literacy education is great, but has its limits. Like many other life skills, financial acumen is cultivated at a young age by observing one’s parents.
  3. My high school required a semester-long Personal Financial Management (PFM) course, but allowed people to test out of it with a 70% or better on a preliminary exam. A lot of high-achieving students tested out of it so they could cram another AP course into their schedules. Fast forward to the present. I work with a very nice, very bright recent college grad who is 11 years my junior. We happened to go to the same high school. He was the co-valedictorian of his class. Let’s call him Michael for the sake of anonymity. Michael has been on two vacations this year, but often complains about lacking the funds for a down payment on a home. We often chat about personal finance because it’s an interest of mine. Sometimes I’m shocked by his lack of awareness. I’ll ask, ‘Michael, don’t you remember that from PFM class?’ And he’ll respond, ‘No, I tested out of it.’
  4. I wouldn’t touch McDaniels, given his history. I’d prefer John Harbough, assuming he gets let go from Baltimore. Personally, I want to be certain that the next coach is capable of winning a Super Bowl. Lincoln Riley is also on top of my wishlist, but I think Oklahoma pays up to keep him.
  5. My wife works in higher education and I often razz her about the wonderful amenities on campus and the increasing costs associated with them. Her response (which I think is mostly true) is that the students demand these amenities and if they weren’t offered at her school, the students would go somewhere else.
  6. It’s true that the dual-income house leads to extra costs (child care, extra car, etc.), but it also provides a layer of security that past generations have lacked since only 50% of household income is at risk due to job loss or disability.
  7. I’ve read The Millionaire Next Door and I’ll second that recommendation. However, you don’t need to read a book to understand that the key to building wealth is to spend less than you earn. Interestingly enough, I read a big driver of inequality post WWII has been the increasing number of women attending college. High-earning men are more likely to pair off with high-earning women they meet while in college and that leads to a small number of high-earning households.
  8. 60 with 2 kids is feasible. It just depends on how high you prioritize savings.
  9. Sadly, I’m sure that’s true. You can throw all sorts of funding into financial literacy, but most people will get their money habits from their parents.
  10. Start at 50. Add 5 years for every kid and / or divorce. That’s a realistic retirement age for most folks.
  11. Don’t write Rodgers off. When was the last time he got a shiny new toy on offense? They’ve spent their high-end draft capital on defense at a 2:1 clip since 2012. Be optimistic about 2019. New coach. 10 picks (2 firsts). $30 million in cap space. Otherwise, why tune in?
  12. This game has played out pretty much exactly how I would have expected. Green Bay plays almost well enough to win, but luck always favors Seattle in Seattle. A microcosm of the season, as well,
  13. I just don’t see how you can reverse it. Uphold a catch on the field? Maybe. But to say that’s absolutely a catch upon review? C’mon.
  14. Biegel must have been just awful in training camp if they weren’t willing to exercise the same amount of patience with him as they did with Fackrell.
  15. Again - that’s luck only the Seahawks have.
  16. Very predictable with Seattle gettting all the close calls. Always seems to be the case in Seattle (bad luck, not blaming the officiating ... this time). Adams catches that 40 yard pass inbounds if he’s not bumped by Wagner.
  17. If they lose tonight, I think there’s still a path forward for this team (but it obviously narrows). They’d almost certainly have to beat the Vikings next week, but they’d have 10 days rest. I no longer have expectations for this team and just root for them to win week-to-week. It’s almost more fun that way.
  18. Green Bay’s most ‘explosive’ return man will be back tonight!
  19. I’m not reading much into the outcome of yesterday’s game other than I was obviously impressed with Aaron Jones and the defense’s ability to keep the Dolphins out of the endzone. They beat an average, banged-up team at Lambeau. I’m happy with the win, but not ready to adjust my expectations. Thursday will be a more legitimate test.
  20. If only they could play the AFC East every other week like the Patriots
  21. So who ya got? I’ll take the Packers 27-17, but no outcome will surprise me. I no longer have any expectations for this year’s team and will just be rooting for a win week-to-week. Enjoy the game, everyone. Go Pack!
  22. If I order a pizza and there is a $3 delivery charge AND I tip 10% on the bill when I pay online, do I still need to tip the driver?
  23. Ted Thompson immediately going into the Packer HOF is a great story. He built a Super Bowl champion from scratch and deserves this honor. I’m glad they had the good sense to recognize him right away while he’s still lucid and can appreciate it.
  24. Oh, thanks, I vaguely remember that. If I recall correctly, he even knew the woman’s first name. Obviously, she was a regular at the airport.
