  1. I'd still take him in a heartbeat on this team.
  2. Brewers going to get a sweep because that's just how this stuff works.
  3. This is the first year in a really long time I’ve had no strong feeling on how I think the Packers are going to do. In 2017 I thought they’d be contenders and was really excited about Martellus Bennett. Last year I thought they were going to suck and should have drastically overhauled the roster. They basically did so a year later, and at least on paper have finally addressed the glaring lack of talent on defense. Even in seasons where the consensus was that things were really up in the air, I can think of 2009 as being one, I thought they’d be pretty good. Most of the last decade I thought they were the same no-defense, 10-win team. This year though I really have no read, personally. I can see anything from the wonder boy coach getting them back to prominence with a well-coached, talented defense, to LaFleur just tanking and being fired in two years. Then of course there’s a chance they respond well but it’s still a transitional year and they win 9 or 10 games but need one more offseason to take a jump. I think any of the three are equally possible. If I had to put money on it I would do so on the last scenario.
  4. Don't underestimate the value of an ace. Guys like Chacin and Davies are much more viable options when they don't have to masquerade as one. I know they aren't growing on trees but take Greinke off the staff in 2011 and it looks much worse. I'm just saying you're not always as far away from competence as it feels.
  5. And I suspect that is where DS sits. He thinks the chips are going to fall and the team is either not good enough and therefore he doesn't want to give up real assets to improve, or maybe just good enough to squeak in and compete. You can argue that Moose and Grandal are sunk costs coming off the books, so if he holds on to both and they miss it, it's not exactly like he lost a whole lot.
  6. The NL is so bad that even just being OK the rest of the year could get WC2. Would people rather they accept they can't win a title and sell off pieces, or do nothing and fart to WC2. I'm honestly not sure of my own answer. It's so rare to get those chances I don't think it'd be the worst thing in the world.
  7. Yeah. I agree with those that want a very strong positive or negative trend. The worst position to be in, will be this same .500 ball and a game out or tied for a WC spot on July 25. You don't want to "buy" with such a mediocre team but can you sell Moose with an actual chance at the playoffs?
  8. This is disingenuous. The team has massive problems with its pitching and a troublesome lack of farm talent. Very little of which has been able to jump to the majors. Title contenders is extremely generous. They've been mediocre all year. Yeah it's reasonable that they bounce back next season, but the talk of a rebuild isn't crazy talk. Their AAA team is 22 games over .500, and the same pitchers that are carrying horrendous ERA's in the majors this year are lights out in the hitter friendly PCL. I get it's a big jump, but we've seen these guys stuff and it's major league quality. The difference just could be the quality of communication between the pitching/bullpen coach and the pitchers. Color my skeptical but I don't think Chris Hook is the reason Corbin Burnes is as effective as I would be. The win-loss record of our AAA team is about as important to me as Lorenzo Cain buying new shoes to run faster. Those teams don't exist to win games. That they are that successful and our MLB is meh would just make me think it's got a lot of AAAA players. Pumpkin Saladino was tearing the cover off the ball. Yeah some of those guys do have stuff that is MLB quality, for sure. But they're not playing like that and it's not really an uncommon thing for prospects. That's the problem for a lot of guys who never make it in the majors.
  10. Also, your last sentence is just blatantly false. Literally no one thought they were playing poorly a month ago? Huh? Even pre-nose dive they had four black holes in the lineup and a very suspect bullpen. Plenty of people thought that.
  11. Might want to chill a bit. I'd say he's pretty far from complete nonsense. This team had a good six weeks and has been the same mediocrity the rest of the way. The terrible division is the only reason anyone is still clinging to a playoff dream. He sounds a lot closer to reality than you do, tbh.
  12. The Brewers don't have the chips you'd need to get Sabathia or Greinke. It's plausible they'd have done it with an offense this supposedly good, prior to this season. As someone else said, trading Yelich that late ain't gonna do a whole lot. I'd argue you'd have to do that next season, or after next season at the latest. Problem, if you can call it that, is that they're not bad enough to ship him yet. You have to really know you can't compete before you trade him. Assume Moose and Grandal are done, Shaw has to play next year. 2B is OK. But this team absolutely needs a starting pitcher.
  13. I really can't see them buying. I'd be shocked. They'd have done it by now.
  14. https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/ I guess these guys are ignorant and flat out wrong too, since they peg both Chacin and Albers at a value of -0.6 each, or in other words, worth less than nothing. This isn't a really good comparison. You're talking about a trade vs. a waiver claim. I don't think you'd get more than potato chips for Chacin. But cutting him loose and only giving up a pretty small pile of cash, someone's going to do it. But that aside low trade value != worthless.
  15. I don't know if the Brewers can afford to lose Davies. A good starter that doesn't have electric stuff and therefore won't command that kind of money. He'd seem to be the poster boy for one they have to at least try to keep just because they can, possibly. I don't think we'll know the answer to the original question until next year. Can Shaw still play baseball? Aguilar? Was Cain just hurt and still a good player? What kind of arm does Knebel have? Is Jimmy Nelson going to pitch again?
  16. That's just it. And it sure felt like this one had the talent to do so.
  17. I don't feel too upset honestly just because I'm a Brewers fan. It was always in the back of my head this could happen this year. Even if you're optimistic you know how difficult it is to win consistently. It always feels like you're waiting for things to go wrong in a way I don't feel with the other teams I follow.
  18. I don't think they'll win 80. Not being crabby, I just really don't. I'd hate to see this pitching staff get tired. I think they'll finish 10 back of the Cubs. My rational side says it's still a tinge too early to sell, but I'm already interested in what that'll mean if they do it.
  19. I think this has to be the most disappointing of the last 25 years.
  20. I'm not overvaluing him and I was with you about him not being in the class with Grandal and Moose but SP doesn't grow on trees. In a trade I don't see him getting anything better than lottery tickets. But a guy that started a division championship game last year and served as the pseudo ace of the best record in the NL is not clearing waivers in July/August. $3 million for his track record is basically free. Someone would take that chance. I wouldn't even be surprised if our buddies to the South did.
  21. Ok, let's talk it out as a real life scenario. We place Chacin on waivers. Any team claiming Jhoulys Chacin owes him over $3.25M for the rest of 2019. Chacin has a FIP near 6 and an ERA of 5.18, and a WHIP of 1.50 for the season. Which contender is making that claim and picking up that tab? The sellers aren't going to, because that's just a waste of their money. Contenders are likely in the market for better options than that. Who is paying $3.25M for a 2 and a half month rental of that? Every team in baseball isn't going to make a decision based on his 2019 stats. A team for whom $3 million is peanuts is going to see a chance to make a claim and give up nothing for a guy who at times has been a pretty good SP and has playoff experience. I can't believe you're that serious about this. There is not a chance he'd clear waivers. I get everyone is upset how the season is going, but come on.
  22. Going to be an interesting off-season, that's for sure. I believe this season was the one most people targeted for our original rebuild taking shape a couple years ago. Suddenly feels like we have to do it again. I wouldn't even know where to start if I'm Stearns. And you loose Moose and Grandal. Yikes.
  23. I think Chacin's value is probably somewhere between Perez and Grandal. A contending team in need of an arm would claim him in a millisecond.
  24. I think you're dreaming if you think Chacin could clear waivers. A veteran SP who has shown ability to string together a lot of good baseball with decent big game experience. He's having a bad year, but there is no chance that would happen.
