  1. Too much just went wrong. Knebel was the first thing and it just kept coming. This just hasn't been a case of needing Kimbrel or a SP. You can pretty much pick a spot and there's a problem. There aren't those one or or two things that I wish went differently, there are like 12. It's hard for me say fire this guy when that happens. I don't even feel very passionate about Stearns lack of action because I suspect he saw too many problems to give up anything substantial to fix one or two.
  2. We could have both and would still be pretty bad. In hindsight I'm glad we didn't bother.
  3. Of all the posts that get really old, the idea Mark Attanasio is laughing from his golden throne and throwing cash in the air tops the list.
  4. Cain has looked pretty good recently. That could be huge.
  5. I had people beating down doors to use my tickets last year and this year I am nearly having to go to some of these solo. Kids are too young to hang in the heat/night games. Just kind of funny as I remember a time when a .500 team in July would've been a godsend.
  6. One decent starter missing did not cause the rest of the pitching staff to collapse. Burnes having a 8+ ERA and Barnes and Williams being gas cans this year has nothing to do with Miley. Miley wasn't even pitching for the first half of last season. Literally has nothing to do with what I said nor did I insinuate any of those things. I am simply saying not bringing him back was stupid. It was stupid. A lot of people thought it was stupid, even at the time it was not done. I've said, one page ago, that this team has far more problems than would be fixed by signing one guy or doing one trade. But the Miley thing was still stupid.
  7. I don't buy into the DJ thing. Letting Miley walk for $4.5 million blew my mind at the time and now. I don't know what the hell he was thinking.
  8. If you're a wild card winner you can be a world series winner. It's baseball. Personally don't think this team gets even close. They are gassed, with a bunch of mediocre horses fighting like hell, but they just aren't good enough. I don't think they'll win 80 games by the time fatigue sets in.
  9. He was but there is just so much going wrong this year. Like everything besides Yelich and Moose. It's honestly a bit shocking they are still above .500. It feels like they should be a lot worse than that.
  10. I mentioned this in the preseason thread on the "off chance" we were bad this year. But it has to be asked. At what point is Yelich for sale? If we're bad, we're bad, and the dude is not gonna re-sign here. That's the kind of chip that you can really re-stock with. A couple years of control as opposed to a rental. I'm not saying we're at that point yet, but let's say we're 10 games under, or at the winter meetings with a team that finished with 75 wins. He's on the table, right?
  11. I don't disagree, but the only time this team has ever had a stud in my lifetime, is when they traded for one who was already a Cy Young caliber guy, and Ben Sheets. That's it. Our restocking and drafting has gotten basically nowhere. Atrocious track record.
  12. They don't and that's why that was so devastating for me. I didn't know this would happen, but when you're a fan of this team it's what you expect. 2011 and 2018 look awfully similar.
  13. Like what? There are problems all over the place. This was not getting fixed by a trade or two. I'm not in his head, but honestly, I'm guessing that he figured out the team was far enough away from good that it wasn't worth giving up anything substantial to salvage a season going nowhere.
  14. This is pretty much how I feel. This team has no horses. If they stay in until 9/30 it is because the division sucks. It is time to sell.
  15. Not so sure about that. A cap and revenue sharing would almost certainly mean less money for the upper echelon players. You would not see any more 10-year, $400mm deals. Mid-range, and the good but not great players would benefit the most. As is what you see in the NBA. Where guys like Middleton basically get max money. Without a cap the LeBrons of the world would be making absolutely insane dollars. With the marketing tied to individuals like it is in the NBA I don't think it's a stretch that you could see a billion dollar contract in the NBA, or something close to it. And that is another problem for the players union. Making a deal that benefits a higher number of players but compromises those monster contracts.
  16. This is what I think is best. Arbitration is one thing baseball does mostly right. Sort of merit based raises. It just seems that it takes way too long. If you're a late-pick that ends up being really good, you can already be old enough that teams might view age as a concern by the time you hit FA for the first time. Or at the very least, your best stuff is behind you already.
  17. Hard to disagree. What I do have an issue with is how long it takes stellar players to get what they deserve. And yes, I understand the minimums are a generous salary to the average person, but the fact is that these aren't average people, and if the owner is able to start you on a major league squad and you smash 40 homers, then yes, I do believe he should have to pay you what is fair. And fair to me at that level is not 500k.
  18. The Springsteen one, from what I gathered, wasn't quite the same ilk. It was more Borat going to find Pamela Anderson type thing than really being about Bruce Springsteen. But yeah, probably, since their budgets aren't terribly high and they draw decently well.
  19. That trade is going to be a disaster. Both teams will be worse. Not that the Thunder care.
  20. I don't see Shaw going anywhere. Who didn't want Albers off the team last year? He's been a big part of the team this season. Shaw has played too well for prolonged periods for a team like the Brewers to lose. At his salary I'll be pretty surprised if they don't give him a fresh start next year with Moose almost definitely gone. But I don't want to take this too far off the rails.
  21. BA is good. I'm calling BS on that "one eye on the clock" thing. When BA signed his extension with FSN he made it pretty public that he felt he owed them for hiring him in the first place. They also do allow him to leave as was noted. But I've never, ever gotten the sense he doesn't want to be there and he has great chemistry with Schroeder. All the things that have been said against him here are pretty much true, the back in my day stuff, etc., and I just take it for the nonsense it is. Their banter back and forth is pretty good and Schroeder is just the uncle who's had too many and tells exaggerated stories. He's not the greatest ever but he is harmless and they do well together. But hating broadcasters is more of a past time than this game.
  22. Out. It happens. They wanted to be sustainably competitive, and I would rather have a sort of dud year like this where they're ok, but interesting, if it means they're going to continue giving me hope every year. I don't really like the every 8 years then fire sale thing. Too much went wrong. Bad SP, and too much regression on offense. If they come out of the gates playing poorly it may be time to think about getting some lottery tickets for Grandal.
