  1. That stinks. I guess you are just forced to watch and support Brewers baseball then. My condolences.
  2. Sorry, I appreciate Doug Melvin bringing some wins back to this franchise, but I would really prefer the current pragmatic approach rather than the Fantasy Football game I felt like Melvin was playing whenever he smelled a short-term chance for success. I am really not all that interested in all-out years followed by six years of suckage because that's six years of terrible baseball I have to watch. I for one appreciate the attempt at building a team that's sustainably competitive. Sustainably competitive means what it means. There will be years where you didn't get Kimbrel and won 87 games and just missed out. I accept that.
  3. I can't really fathom how anyone expects the Brewers to have better infrastructure year over year than the Dodgers. If that's the standard you're setting you will be disappointed forever. And I'm afraid Craig Kimbrel wouldn't close that gap. What you can hope for in baseball is a team that fights and stays in it and is good enough and hot enough at the right moment to beat them four times. But you can't do that without getting there. By that reasonable measure I am pretty satisfied with how the team is operating.
  4. Seems like paying Grandal $18 million would hurt profit. You won't address that, gee, I wonder why.
  5. Making the playoffs is really hard. You're essentially talking about making the conference semis in a comparable sport. Still should probably happen consecutively in 40 years, but very, very hard in a no-cap league. I think they will break that streak this season though.
  6. Those don't count because they don't support the decision he's already made that Mark A is hoarding dollar bills.
  7. Why is that in quotation’s? Yes, he’s not a bad owner. There are much much worse owners> Nutting comes to mind immediately But when you say you will bank money and spend when extremely competitive, we’ll then do it. Have you considered for even a millisecond the possibility that they may not feel he is worth a certain amount due to their own scouting of him/risk of age/decline? Why is it immediately penny pinching every time they don't get a player you want?
  8. Of course they got better, and I wish we'd gotten him, but this isn't like, throw in the towel material. I remember people calling into Chicago radio proclaiming the season over when we got CC Sabathia. It's just so over the top.
  9. Some people are talking about 30-40 inning relief pitcher like they just acquired early 2000s Barry Bonds. It's insane.
  10. Seriously. The "owner is taking us for a ride" schtick has to end. It's incorrect, dumb, and embarrassing. We have one of the best owners in sports. What he's trying to do is extremely difficult.
  11. I'm on my phone a lot at games and much of that time is researching players and looking up stats. Those complaints are very old man shakes fist at sky-ish.
  12. What do these guys do that people can't already find out through other sources anyway? Are you really being any kind of a journalist if your post game questions are "Tough game, looks like you struggled to score runs" or "Good win, seemed like the pitcher threw a good game today." The majority of clickbait web material is sourced by real reporters. They lift stories from actual journalists and offer click baity hot takes. Just for example, some reporter asks a question and gets Randy Moss to say "I play when I wanna play." Colin Cowherd takes that and churns it into 2 hours of material with GMs and agents and retired ex players sounding off. But it still all starts with a reporter asking the question. On a smaller scale, BrewCrewBall or some other place like that takes Counsell defending his use of Hader and turns it into a 1500-word analysis of whether he is right or wrong. Same type of content development, but it still all starts with a reporter asking a seemingly stupid question.
  13. Likely because 80% of his emails and mentions on Twitter are from people demanding explanations for things the team does. For most of his writing to be presented this way makes sense to me.
  14. Fans have ~ diddly understanding of the grind of that job. It's amazing sometimes to read comments and see how little they grasp about it. It's a constant balance of asking difficult but fair questions of people with mostly very delicate egos. You can't simply grill them all the time if you want any kind of access. They're under no obligation at all to speak with you and most of them find you annoying right out of the starting block. If they stop talking to you, you will be the one blamed by editors. It's a relationship that most working people don't have to deal with because co-workers are usually forced to interact with each other whether or not they get along. Most people seem to think that reporters should be "tough" at all times and the players/coaches just have to "suck it up!"
  15. The more I mull it over the more it just makes sense. You are sitting in first place in a division that will be competitive probably all year, you don't need to make moves like this out of desperation. Let the veteran get his ABs and send Hiura somewhere he gets to play all the time.
  16. Reporters don't write headlines or captions. It happens a variety of ways: 1) Image is placed/captioned by someone who doesn't watch baseball 2) Image is placed by someone building layout who jumps the gun trying to fill the white space, moves on to something else, forgets to go back and change it. 3) Old photo is loaded with a caption from another time the thing in the caption happened, and they forget to change it
  17. Bleh. Hate it. But still understand. You can't just keep Shaw in San Antonio for the rest of the year. You have to see if he can salvage this season.
  18. He's worth it if he gets one and stupid if he doesn't take it. I don't hate Middleton by any stretch but if we're prioritizing for me it's Brogdon, Lopez, Hill, Middleton. I'd like them all to come back but that's really how I see it.
  19. Honestly it just sounds like you think every pro athlete is a fast-twitch guy who will look like Corey Maggette with a better diet. It doesn't work like that. Lots of great athletes have pretty blah bodies. There was probably no more blah athletic back than Marshall Faulk.
  20. I don't feel the same about Bostick because he disobeyed his assignment to catch a ball that was landing right in Jordy Nelson's lap. But he still doesn't owe me an apology. His teammates, yeah, he probably does.
  21. What a stupid requirement. I took Latin to fulfill it in high school. Yeah if you're expecting your blue chip basketball recruit from Compton to study Latin for two years, lol, maybe that is WI's problem.
  22. I secretly wished he'd separate from that organization forever. When they had him come back after they won it and all the fans "forgave" him was stupid and funny. Who are they to forgive him? I think I remember saying he wasn't sorry, but I'd have never given those fans a lick of satisfaction. He was too classy I guess.
  23. If I can get on UW for anything, it's the failure to parlay back to back Final Four appearances into anything substantial. Dekker and Kaminsky both got drafted and the team was a power for two seasons and immediately fizzled out. You just can't do that.
  24. I'm sure it is more than elite programs and staying warm. But those are factors and shouldn't just be cast aside. UW is a great school that has to sell itself as a great place to be in spite of a lot of things. Other places don't have that problem. If people can't agree that it's hard to sell teenagers on the upper Midwest we'll just have to agree to disagree. They need to dominate among their peer group like Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and snag guys that are overlooked by power schools or guys that miss out simply because those schools run out of space. The list that you made is 16% of the talent pool you picked. I'm not sure it advocates super strongly for what you're saying.
  25. I don't know if you're talking about me but I never said or thought recruits wouldn't come to WI based on fans on Twitter. I'm sure it is far, far worse in SEC country than it is here. But what I am saying as far as recruiting goes, is that I don't think many fans of any school are realistic about where their school fits in the NCAA food chain. WI is not a top tier athletics school. That may not alarm anyone here, but there are people hell bent on convincing themselves that it is. If we're talking about only the big dog schools, I would put WI in Tier 3 or Tier 2/3. You have the pro farm schools, your Alabamas, Kentuckys, UNCs etc., depending on sport, and then you have schools like Michigan, OSU, etc., that still have a decent advantage on Madison. Losing someone like Diamond Stone isn't alarming to me. The alarm should be going off when you're missing on mid level guys to places like Iowa or Indiana. WI survives on those recruits, but any blue chip type going to UW should be seen as a very fortunate situation. I just can't pin it on coaches when somebody picks a perennial powerhouse school or one that's farming pros over UW. I think that's just fans going for a scapegoat. Things like State Street and the Camp Randall experience are very cool, but you cannot reasonably expect that to actually sway most kids from being 10 minutes from Venice or South Beach, or playing hoops at Jordan's alma mater. The JP Tokotos are usually not coming to UW regardless of what is pitched to them by a coach. If the academic thing matters, which maybe it does, I wouldn't know what goes on behind closed doors. Well, good. We don't need our state university to turn into a revolving door for rental players.
