  1. If he does 4.23 for us then I'll stand corrected.
  2. Look at his splits, that's why it was silly. There is a reason his ERA was comparable to the bigger names in FA yet he signed in December for 2/15. I'm not sure I expect him to finish the year under 5. I think you could have plucked a lot of bums from anywhere to do what he's going to do for the Brewers. A guy who made his career in Petco and then you sign him to play in MP. It was silly.
  3. I don't think it's too early to be worried about Chacin because it was pretty silly at the time of the signing and a lot of people thought so. That guy isn't going to be in the rotation in September unless the team is horrible, I feel confident saying that. It was a shot in the dark value signing that I don't see working. He's just not very good. I would honestly rather see Guerra back in there than continue to watch Chacin pitch. My guess personally is that Stearns' plan is to hope they are within striking distance at the break and see what's out there. He's gambling something better will be out there than what his options were in FA.
  4. I simply don't agree. When Braun won his appeal, a lot of people had the wool over their eyes. Every discussion about it, even the ones here, seemed to be close to 50/50 with a lot of people believing his nonsense about the collector, there was no proof, the sample was invalid, etc. Most intelligent people thought it was a technicality. But the point is that he was better off being gracious and just letting it go. He won - game over. Let the thing die a slow death. But he couldn't do that. His ego wasn't capable of it. And I don't doubt that his stern denial played a role in MLB wanting to make sure they got him. He embarrassed the drug testing protocol. He had everything to lose with that speech because he knew he was lying, and essentially nothing to gain because his critics still didn't believe him.
  5. I'm not sure how he thought that would repair damage. I'm pretty sure I read that the press conference was one of his biggest personal regrets. There was no reason to do it. None. Release a one-sentence statement about being happy to move on. The rest was Braun overkill. It was an ego nuclear missile to win a war he'd already won.
  6. His crew had to stick to that story maybe. He definitely did not have to do that press conference. His ego did, but he didn't.
  7. Yes athletes are human, yes they make mistakes. What most of them don't do is take PEDs then lie about it. This whole "nobody's perfect" mantra just falls on deaf ears. Oh, and for the record, I don't accept the premise most everyone in business lies, all executives cheat on their wives, etc. And if I do run across people like that, no, I don't like or respect them either. So no different than Braun. Genuinely not sure about this. Maybe not now, but I really doubt this was true in baseball about 10 years ago. If you include the guys who juiced and still weren't good enough to make it, this number is probably a lot larger as well. Even if we don't accept that, tmw is spot-on about the culture we're in. It's about public shaming, not morality. Our entire culture is "gotcha" nonsense, people behind computers ridiculing famous people for things they do every day. Sometimes it's so benign it's a complete joke. I'm just remembering the "disgusting" stuff Ken Bone got called out for saying that was totally mundane everyday rambling. It's a never-ending blog-fest of trying to point out how morally terrible the next guy is for no other purpose besides putting oneself on a pedestal. Braun may not be a great example of this but he's still got a valid point.
  8. Hitler made it into the thread. He always does if it's long enough.
  9. Yeah, definitely getting his number retired when he's done. He'll still go down as the greatest or second greatest Brewer ever. If they win a World Series in the twilight of his career he'll be a total legend.
  10. I think the injuries have had a much larger impact for the drop off than not using PEDs. That thumb injury is no joke. Braun literally couldn't pull the ball for an entire season (not to mention his plethora of other injuries). I do wonder if his PED use was for injury prevention/recovery or if the use of PEDs has caused more soft tissue injuries later in his career. It's hard to compare this, as you suggest at the end. He's aging and getting hurt as time goes on so I don't think it's a totally even comparison. As the age increases, so does the recovery time. One injury begets another, as you're using other parts your body, often incorrectly, to compensate for the parts falling apart. That's why it's so hard to ever tell precisely how much PEDs help. Somebody would have to use them openly be allowed to compete long enough to examine it. I don't think he was using them when he came out as a rookie. Maybe he was though, I don't know.
  11. IMO Uecker's stories aren't just "I was bad at baseball." He has a window to hundreds of baseball players and executives that nobody else does. He tells amazing, often funny stories about these people. It's worth listening to him just for that. Like I said, I can google the box score as he's talking. I never need the game details from him other than what's actively happening, this instant during a play. But in a vacuum, I don't think he's a very good announcer as he doesn't seem in-tune with the fact that most of his viewers aren't listening from start to finish. They're jumping in at random spots and he isn't aware he hasn't said the score in 30 minutes.
  12. All the SP has looked about how I thought so far. Didn't expect much from Davies in the early going, but Chacin and Suter are about what I thought they'd be as starters. I think Chacin can settle in a little bit better but my main thought on the rotation is what it was before the season: The Brewers need Chase Anderson to be the Chase Anderson he was last season at least until Jimmy Nelson comes back. There's a lot on his shoulders right now.
  13. Undergoing teats?! What exactly are they running in NY these days?
  14. So we hold judgement on our pitchers but make them now for pitchers on other teams? Zoooooooooooooom
  15. Looks like Darvish wouldn't have helped anyway, his ERA is over 10 this year.
  16. Yes I'm sure Stearns plan was to go through the rotation once, then make the necessary trades.
  17. I'd rather just lose this one 14-2 than go through 8 pitchers again to lose 8-7. Just get the ball to Chase and move on.
  18. Sorta. That bullpen has already blown a save, Anderson's start was perfect, Suter was about what you expect from a back-end guy. Chacin was roughed up a little and Davies has been what he is, inconsistent. I'm not a big Davies fan personally, he does this way too often to be an ace...which he isn't, but we sorta pretend he is.
  19. Symbolism of being "opening day starter." Players would probably not like it if one of the horses didn't get to start this game. Counsell can't start Suter here no matter how much sense it makes. It's a sign of respect.
  20. They don't exist. You can't stream WTMJ during Brewers/Packers. http://www.sportshd.me/mlb/529467/h Use that link for a video stream though, if you want.
  21. This is news to me. He's 'beloved' as an analyst?! OK. Yes, he's extremely popular, has taken on sort of the lovable silly uncle role in the booth.
  22. Was that ever substantiated? I could swear it was said by him in a published interview. I might have even seen him say it. I guess I'm not 100% sure, but I think the exact quote was something like "why he would leave the sample sit so long, I don't know - maybe it's because he's a Cub fan, maybe he's an anti-semite, whatever - but it does appear pretty suspicious". ETA: Could also be it was in a report of what people say he told them, as opposed to Braun saying it publicly himself. In any case, I vaguely remember a quote like that being attributed to Braun. There were lots of reports on that from mainstream sources: https://www.si.com/si-wire/2013/08/19/ryan-braun-discredit-urine-collector More ETA: So he brought up race and religion, and then made the statement that I paraphrased above. The implication that Laurenzi was an anti-semite was not as direct as I made it out to be, at least in the sense that race and religion was in the previous paragraph of Braun's statement. Pathetic. I'm fine with hating Braun, but you're REALLY reaching here. I think if you're going to say something like that, make sure you have a concrete source on it and not a vague memory. Braun never got anywhere close to that specific about things.
  23. I actually think the markets play a role in that. SF and NY are both much more forgiving to this type of thing. More used to it. Lots of transplants in both, very liberal areas, lots of celebrity, etc. In a place like Milwaukee you have "midwestern values" at play and more people who think they're Braun's friend on some level. A lot of those people felt betrayed and like he was just another LA phony. I really do think it's a factor.
  24. But not everybody else would have cheated in the first place, and people are totally justified in despising anyone who does. I'm glad some people still have a moral compass that's not made of Jell-o. Cheaters deserve all the scorn they get and then some. Hey, I get that you've never sped on the freeway, played hooky from work, cheated on an exam, your taxes or a significant other. Unlike you and like 99.999% of human beings on earth, I admit guilt on some of the above. Holier than thou. Thanks, I feel much less "slimy" for coming clean like Ryan Braun did. These are not equivalent things to what Braun did, but at the same time, most people are never looking at the potential reward that Braun was. Joe Schmoe criticizing an athlete for taking performance enhancers will always get an LOL from me. They don't have a clue what they'd do. Anybody who says they wouldn't take PEDs for a shot at $100 million is somebody I'm skeptical of right off the bat. The only people who really have a moral leg to stand on are his peers who never used them.
