  1. I don't know how much help he'd be this year (meaning I'm not sure he'd be enough to get us to the playoffs), but he would definitely be a nice addition to the team. He would certainly help solidify the rotation in the future and would be a good player to take a chance on if the asking price isn't too high.
  2. I would think the Brewers would have to give too much to get Sherrill. It would probably prevent them from aquiring another starter. With that said, let's speculate. For just Sherrill, what do you think they give up? Does Hart, Villy and a top 20 prospect get us Sherrill and Scott? Does anyone know what kind of contract Sherrill has?
  3. If this move is taken at face value I think it's a decent move that won't hurt the team. Lopez brings consistency to the lineup and strengthens the bench slightly with Counsell and McGehee as regular pinch hitting options. I strongly believe, though, that Melvin has another deal for pitching in the works. I don't see him making this move thinking it will give us the needed push to make the playoffs on its own. I think Hardy and Gamel will be pieces in a trade that brings Halladay to the Brewers. Escobar gets called up and Lopez can always play SS if he struggles to contribute. If another trade for a pitcher is not made, I wonder why Melvin would make this deal as it is probably a neutral move by itself.
  4. Wells' contract would be crippling to a team like the Brewers even if they did take Hall in return. To have that amount of money on the books through 2014 would prevent the Brewers from making any serious moves until the contract expired or Wells was traded. Toronto would have to be willing to eat a large portion of his salary for it to be a worthwhile move for the Brewers.
  5. McClung throws a pitch before Macha can take him out. I wonder how Macha, or the team, will handle his insubordination? McClung has no reason to be angry with Macha for trying to pull the plug on his horrible showing.
  6. How about Hardy, Hart and Dillard for Bedard, Morrow and The Muscle?
  7. As the Brewers don't have any high level pitching prospects to offer, I think it would take Escobar and Gamel to get the deal done. The Blue Jays are going to want a lot in return for Halladay, and they'll likely get it, or just hang on to him. It's an extreme sellers market for pitching right now and teams are going to be willing to one up the competition for a pitcher like Halladay. If traded, he will provide a CC like push to the playoffs for two years instead of one for the lucky team that gets him.
  8. I would think going to a contender may fix some of his lazy habits. Plus, if he's hitting .300 now, I wonder how some motivation, like winning, will help him? I'm not worried about the Brewers signing him after this year as they have Weeks and McGehee. They would just need a half season of his current production, or better, to shore up the lead off spot and 2nd base. If he's a type B free agent after the season, they also get a draft pick.
  9. http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=19541 Well now the Brewers have the space to add Lopez if they can make this deal happen.
  10. So if the Brewers are unable to trade Hall, and decide to DFA him, he will either be claimed by another team at League minimum, accept an assignment to go down to AAA, or sit around and get paid, but have no team to play with because the team released him. Is this correct? If it is, I would have to think Hall would be a fool to turn down a AAA assignment if no other team claims him. He could at least work on his hitting and improve his status from dead weight to bench player.
  11. So automatic loss wasn't the best description. But with Burns, McClung and Parra's last month, the team was in a hole before the games ever started. The offense helped out a lot, and Burns had a nice start his last time out, but a smart gambler would have bet against the Brewers every time in those games and would have made some nice money. Macha's managing today would not make a difference either. Pitching around Fontenot, Fox and even Lee may have saved a couple runs, but poor pitching would have caught up to him with a different batter anyway. I like Burns and McClung and think they can definitely help this team, but as relievers and not starters.
  12. Assuming we lose today, the Brewers will have gone (I believe) 2-3 with the fill-in starters. I'm not saying that's ideal or the Brewers shouldn't deal for another arm (if they can for the right deal), I'm just not tearing my hair out yet. That record is deceiving, though. Besides the last start by Burns, the pitching has been horrible and has killed the bullpen. If it wasn't for the offense scoring a ton of runs, they would be 1-4, and that doesn't even count Parra's last string of starts.
  13. I'm getting real tired of having these automatic losses with the likes of Parra and fill-in starters. The Dodgers and Cardinals are going to eat this team up if Melvin doesn't make a serious change. Parra should not be back up until he's proved he has fixed himself. Bush is back after the break, but that is too long to wait. Also, it would be nice to have a five man rotation with the off day and give everyone an extra days rest (especially Yo).
  14. Doug needs to do something quickly. I know he was hoping to wait to see what teams would be sellers closer to the break, but this McClung/Burns experiment will put us out of contention too quick to explore those opportunities. I know Burns has pitched well, but he won't hold up for the rest of the season as a starter. Davis/Lopez is a solid trade for this team that will help on so many fronts. Davis will pitch his 6 innings and help to save the bullpen for the rest of the season. McClung would go back to his strength of pitching one, maybe two, innings out of the pen. Then when Bush is healthy, he comes in to replace Burns and it's like the Brewers made another trade. Burns can go back to the bullpen and still help the team. Lopez will be a nice answer to the lead off problem and provide some more stability for the offense and defense. McGehee goes back to third (his natural position) and Gamel gets some more reps in AAA until September. If Salome gets it done, I say great as long as it's Davis and Lopez. This team would go from having two nearly automatic losses in their rotation to having more of an average pitching staff after the All Star break. And with the offense showing it can still score runs, a little spark at lead off spot won't hurt either. Please make this happen Doug! Edit: This also adds depth to the starting rotation and bullpen. The Brewers could absorb another injury better as they would have Parra/Burns/Cody waiting in the wings for the rotation and Smith/Narveson/Dillard/Swindle for the pen.
  15. Right before the pitch, I asked my wife what the outcome would be, walk in a run or grand slam? She picked walk in a run and I picked grand slam. I guess I won.
  16. He did have an ERA below 3 (or right around there) before he was moved to the rotation. There's such a thing as being played out of position. Exactly. McClung can be a very good reliever when used one, maybe two innings at a time. I don't know why the Brewers, and many on this site, have been fooled into thinking he can be a serviceable starter. Pitching as a starter, he loses some of his velocity and much of his effectiveness. Put in back in the bullpen as a 6th or 7th inning guy where he is most effective.
  17. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=4301451 He couldn't be worse than Gerut, could he? May be worth a shot to get some right handed power off the bench.
  18. Well that's just as good as a grand slam. Another great 2 strike hit for Braun.
  19. Along with Milton Bradley throwing the 2nd out into the stands, that play is tied for the most hilarious play of the year.
  20. I like this proposal the more I think about it. The Brewers can get two nice pieces without mortgaging their future. Davis would be the 2nd best starter on the team and Lopez would solve the lead off problem. McGehee would still get plenty of playing time as a super sub, and either Gamel would be sent down or Hall (hopefully) would be DFA'd or traded (for tacos). The question is, what type of prospects do the Brewers have to give up in order to make this deal? Also, what type of free agents are Davis and Lopez this off season if they continue their play?
  21. The problem is these rants should not be in this thread. I agree with much of what you say, but this thread should be about Jeffress and not the politics of weed. I think a new thread should be started in the Off Topic section as we are talking way too much about drug laws here, and not enough about Jeffress and his future with the team.
  22. I think a lot of you need to get past the politics of weed on this one. Many employers in this country test for marijuana, along with other controlled substances. The consequences for failing these tests are known to employees up front. Whether the tests are right or wrong is irrelevant. Jeffress knew that by smoking grass, he risked losing his job. I can accept the first mistake, but the second time around is just plain stupidity. Is weed really worth giving up millions of dollars for? Make your millions first man, and then get high all you want.
  23. The only addiction Jeffress has is immaturity. I'm not one to think weed is the evil drug that many make it out to be, but after his first suspension, Jeffress knew the consequences for getting high and he still did it. Why risk everything you've worked so hard to achieve in order to enjoy some temporary, fleeting pleasure? I would say he and the South Carolina governor fall into the same boat. A combination of feeling they are above everyone else, and complete irresponsibility. It's sad to see so much talent go to waste over a few moronic choices.
  24. A hitter wouldn't hurt, but this team needs to focus all its energy and resources on improving the starting pitching. The offense is struggling and still putting up 3-4 runs per game. They are frustrating as hell to watch sometimes, but it's still one of better offenses in the National League. An almost complete lack of consistent starting pitching is ruining this team, and it's starting to trickle down to the bullpen (getting worn down from overuse) and offense (pressing too hard knowing they have to score a lot). The offense, as it's constructed now, is more than sufficient if this team could procure some reliable starting pitching.
  25. http://insider.espn.go.co...e=brandonjennings-090609 I feel much better about the Jennings pick after reading this Chad Ford article. Seems that the people who've seen him play the most in Europe, have the highest praise for his overall game and development. It's a long read, but a good one. With Skiles as his coach, this kid could become something really special for the Bucks.
