  1. Yovani Gallardo pitched 110 innings in '07 and 46 innings in '08 between AAA and the Majors (playoffs included). There are many that feel you need to gradually increase a young pitcher's innings pitched in order to avoid injuries and keep them effective in the future. The theory is that a large jump in IP from one year to the next during a pitcher's developmental years can have a negative effect on health and performance. I agree, but how do the Brewers avoid this with Yo? Do they limit him to 140 IP this year and hope the rest of the pitching staff fills the void? What if he's dealing all year long? Do they just let him pitch and risk his future effectiveness? If the Brewers are out of contention towards the end of the year, it will be much easier to rest Yo and save him for next season. But if they are still in the playoff race, and Yo is pitching well, it will be very difficult to justify resting their best pitcher. I think a possible resolution would be to skip a start (maybe two) per month, but still use him out of the bullpen in key situations in order to keep him fresh while still helping the team. Any thoughts?
  2. I like the clip where he knocks Geovany Soto on his arse.
  3. Since you said you consider her boss a friend, have you spent time with him socially before? We have quite a few times and enjoy hanging out with him. He's even come to a few Brewer games with us. I just take issue with it being Opening Day as want to enjoy it to the fullest. It's hard enough that they're playing the Cubs. To answer your question Yount, does your wife know this may also be YOUR funeral? Exactly. The last thing I want is stress at the tailgate party from Brewer fans giving us gruff. There's enough gruff from Cubs fans once you get inside. I think my wife has come to understand my frustration. We're going to just have them meet us down there instead of driving there and back together all the way from Madison. This way I'll save a murder as I was tempted to take Invader3K's advice. At least we're not sitting together at the game.
  4. Ok, here's the situation. My friends and I have all been going to Opening Day together for as long as I can remember. We are all die hard Brewer fans and think of Opening Day as a religious holiday. This year, my wife said that her boss (who we consider a friend), and his brother, would like to come to Opening Day with all of us. The issue is that they are Cubs fans and will of course be decked out in Cubs gear. I said no because it will interfere with our enjoyment of the day. Any other day I can handle it, but Opening Day is once a year and a day that we all look forward to. My wife worries that if we tell them no, her boss will be offended and take it personally. She also can't understand what the big deal is if a couple of Cubs fans join our festivities. Am I out of line?
  5. What a complete lack of effort by Nady getting thrown out rounding third by too much. Instead of trying to make Baltimore throw it home in a rundown, he just stopped and slowly walked into the tag. Nice way to end the inning. We need more of this throughout the year from Yankee players.
  6. I'm a big C.C. fan as well and will always have a soft spot in my heart for him since he got us to the playoffs. But he's a Yankee now and that trumps my fondness for him as a Brewer. I think it's great that the Yankees are getting pounded with their new ace on the mound. I'm sure he'll be the dominant pitcher he's always been as the season goes on, though. It's just fun watching Yankee fans be disappointed.
  7. I was just looking at the runs scored and runs scored against stats for the Crew this spring. What surprised me was they were 10th out of 14 teams for runs scored and 2nd out of 14 teams for runs scored against. I know it's just spring training, but the RA numbers have to be a positive sign for the pitching and defense going into opening day............... right?
  8. I remember reading an earlier spring training blog about Riske and his struggles. They interviewed Riske and he was disappointed in his performance as well, but said he actually felt good while pitching and felt no pain. I took that as a positive as it appears he may have just messed up his mechanics while pitching injured last year. I would imagine it may take a few weeks to get comfortable throwing without having to make adjustments for an injury. Hopefully he he can right the ship soon, but at least his elbow appears to be healthy.
  9. I agree with the move as well. I just hope McGehee doesn't turn his Lyle Mouton-like spring into a Lyle Mouton-like regular season.
  10. It sounds minor, and missing 4 games is not a huge deal. The main disappointment is we all miss out on Hell's Bells opening day if it's a save situation for the Crew. Hopefully Hoffman will be ok to pitch on Sunday as I'll be a that game as well. Is it a sacrilege to cheer when Hell's Bells plays on Easter?...........................Oh well.
  11. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think at this point all it means that with Hoffman on the shelf and likely headed to the DL that both DiFelice and Julio will make the team to begin the seasonLooks like you're right, but I would still hope that the team sticks with DiFelice when Hoffman comes back. I hope Julio pitches well in the the games he's in, but I just feel he's too much of a risk over DiFelice.
  12. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/42089292.html According to Tom Haudricourt's Brewers Blog, DiFelice has won a bullpen job with his latest performance. I assume if this is true, Jorge Julio is the odd man out. That would be a good thing as the Brewers need to focus more on consistency instead of potential at this point. I would also like to see DiFelice become the long man out of the pen, allowing McClung to be groomed as the future set up man/closer for the team.
  13. Good point about Gamel, I completely spaced that. I would think the team would have to have some kind of plan in place if McGehee gets sent down. Maybe they play him at second most of the time while putting some time in at third and first. Anything to get him as many plate appearances as possible to keep his bat fresh. McGehee could also be a backup plan to Weeks if he gets injured. As for Gamel over McGehee, I would rather have Gamel work out his defensive flaws in AAA until he can at least be serviceable in majors with his glove.
  14. Although I would prefer Duffy and McGehee make the team over Gwynn and Lamb, I would not be too concerned if the team decides to go the other way for the following reasons: 1. The difference between Duffy being on the team vs. Gwynn will likely not make a difference as they would bring similar production as back ups. So why not let Duffy get his licks in down in AAA? He barely played pro ball last year and could use the at bats instead of wasting away on the Brewer bench. If he lights it up in AAA and Gwynn continues to struggle, then call him up and either release Gwynn or trade him. If they both are productive, then one of the two is trade bait. 2. Lamb is struggling, but if he improves at all, he would be a better platoon option at third then Counsell, if Hall struggles again, and he would be a good pinch hit option due to his experience (preparation makes a good pinch hitter and he some experience with that). 3. McGehee would be the best option to take over third full time this year if Hall is injured, traded, or struggles like he did last year. Lamb and Counsell can be productive as bench players, but not full time. McGehee at least has the potential to be productive full time at third, and he is a good fielder (from what I've read). So like Duffy, let him get his licks down in AAA as a full time player, so if/when he's needed, he can hit the ground running in the majors. Feel free to rip these thoughts to shreds if you must. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. I'm in the same boat as you are Marc. I just got my tickets today and it's Loge Bleachers instead of Terrace Box. I was bumming at first, but then I saw row 1 seats 1&2 so I think I got very lucky. Normally I would avoid the bleachers during a Brewers/Cubs game, but since it's Opening Day, I think there will be a lot fewer Cubs fans there trying to ruin it for us all. It's always rowdy in the bleachers, but there should be less tension if fewer Cubs fans get in. Please don't sell your tickets to this one. We need as many Brewer fans there as we can get. Plus Opening Day is always a blast no matter where you sit.
  16. So if Suppan starts the season opener, then isn't he set to start the home opener as well? Are we just assuming Macha will skip starts on the off days to have Looper pitch the home opener? If this is the case, then I'm ok with the decision (even though Bush is a better option). If Suppan starts the home opener, Macha is on crack.
  17. The big kicker is his strikeouts. He's almost doubled up Roberts and Hudson. If he could just figure out a way to cut down on the K's by even 20%, imagine how much better his numbers would be after making that much more contact.
  18. Awesome. I would rather have Gagne in the bullpen instead of Julio. If he makes the team, would his salary be only $400,000 then?
  19. Before reading the article, I was going to make a smart remark about Boyd thinking he's Satchel Paige. Then I read the article and Boyd commented on how Paige was his idol and big inspiration for this comeback. Paige was able to pitch into his 60's because he was considered by many who observed him to be the best pitcher to ever pitch a game. Boyd was a decent pitcher in his day, but no Paige. As far fetched as this comeback is, I'll actually be rooting for Boyd to succeed. How cool would it be if he made a team's bullpen out of spring training and wound up pitching some quality innings in the Majors again? Good luck!
  20. If Macha does decide to match Rivera up with a pitcher, Parra is the logical choice given the nice little history the two have together.
  21. Thank you for making me chuckle. ********* As for Gamel's defense. Are there any scouting reports that indicate he has the ability to become at least an average defensive third baseman? I am warming up to the idea of giving him a shot this year over Hall, as long as he continues to show improvement on D and can hit well enough. If he's reaching his limits at third, than I would say absolutely not given the rest of the infield (except Hardy), as well as the pitching staff.
  22. When I first read the headline in JSOnline, I though it would be for Cubs fans coming to Milwaukee. I'm very glad they are encouraging Brewer fans to go to Wrigley. I hope they do more of this in years to come as both teams compete for the playoffs.
  23. I'm liking the rotation a lot more today than I was yesterday. I'm curious to hear how you all think the Brewers will order the rotation to start the season if there are no injures. I'm thinking it will be Yo, Bush, Suppan, Parra and Looper. This is not an indication of who is a better, just how I think they will start the season.
  24. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3894968 $400,000 could be cheap insurance for the Brewers if Weeks struggles again.
  25. Actually, I think he's 4-0 in the postseason: EDIT: Take that back ....2-0 http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/L/Ploopb001.htm You're right. His team has won all six games he pitched, so at worst, he's a good luck charm.
