  1. Even before Thornburg got hurt it was PTBNL or $100. That alone should tell you about the quality of the player coming back. The reason the amount was set at $100 was because they were so sure the Brewers would choose a player, because the players list is quality. The Thornburg deal will likely go down as highway robbery. I wouldn't assume the players list is quality just because the GMs are both confident they will be able to pick a player. The assumption is that list is plenty big enough to account for injuries and poor development from the players on that list. But the list easily could have been 10 rookie league scrubs.
  2. Anyone think his hamstring issue was because the Brewers had him running on Braun's full count with one out and Braun kept fouling off pitches so Thames ran to second base about 7 times? Eventually Braun struck out and Thames thrown out.
  3. Hard to come up with one Stearns trade that hasn't made him look good. I guess Khris Davis but even that one isn't really that big of a deal. The Adam Lind deal was a bit surprising, but we wont be able to grade that one for at least a couple more years. Well Carter had a better season for less money, so without knowing if there was any interest in the league in a trade, hard to say it was a bad trade even if none of three prospects get to the majors.
  4. Close to a wash, but if you told me I could have a #3/#4 pitcher or an average OF, I would take the starter. Not that Davies has settled out to whatever he is to be yet. Last year when you just look at NL, he would have to be in the ballpark of 23-26 best starter over the course of the season, which would make him a solid #2. But, obviously the long-term jury is still out.
  5. A good start - Bandy 30AB 1.085OPS Pina 35AB 1.083OPS Lucroy 47AB .501OPS
  6. I agree if those two players were Kershaw and Scherzer. I don't see how we can really think we are a playoff team with our starting staff.
  7. You think someone would put them on their 25 man roster? Probably someone else churning their bottom of the bullpen. If not, then I assume the Brewers could tell him we are going to pay you more than the going rate to stay in the system. You know at some point during the year the Brewers will go with a 13 man bullpen. Adding in injuries and performance issues, you would think he would have every chance to get back to the majors with the Brewers.
  8. Much of this also comes down to the schedule. People talk about spring training being too long, but pitchers still aren't 100% ready when the season opens. That's why teams usually get extra days off early in the season. For some reason, the schedule-makers decided to stick it to the Brewers a bit this year and not give them much rest for the first month while facing the best offenses in the league. That mixed with some injuries and under-performance could end up costing us Magnifico. I'm pretty sure the extra days off is because of the unpredictable weather to allow teams to reschedule games early instead of forcing double headers later in the season and the Brewers first 7 games are indoors. They only play 2 outdoor series the whole month. Yeah, I don't think the schedule makers "stuck it" to the Brewers. Most teams would rather have the days off later in the season, and to have that you need to play them in April. If Guerra doesn't get hurt and pitches 12 innings so far this year, it wouldn't even be an issue.
  9. Even if the pitcher is not great, you still save plenty of money by watching the clock for any major leaguers. You have not only the savings from min. wage to arby, but also the savings each year they are in arby. Plus they are more valuable as a trade asset the more years left of control. Even if the pitcher is at the bottom of the pen, that is value. You could have started the clock on player A later and he has one more year of min. wage left. At that price the team would keep him on the roster. But if he started his clock earlier, arby says he is going to get $1.8M - for that price you decide he is not worth it and cut ties. Isn't as big a deal if you have a deep fringe bullpen roster, but even the last year we were paying a Boyer and Capuano to fill out the bullpen.
  10. The Brewers still had to have actually spent $20M (or whatever the project was) before you can depreciate it. It isn't like they actually spent $5M on concourse/restaurant uplifts and are going to depreciate $20M. Unless you are saying they bought a bunch of $15,000 toilets to launder that money to Area 51.
  11. http://www.mlbstream.me/baseball/465283/4/milwaukee-brewers-vs-colorado-rockies-live-stream-online.html That link above has been working for me great at school. Is this a beginning of the year freebie or is this something that would be available all year long or is it a Rockies thing?
  12. I would assume it will be Milone/Jungmann combo effort for the Cubs on the 8th until Garza is off the DL. As for who will be brought up to add to the pen, I assume Cravy, but would be very interesting if they brought up Suter, with the very valid reason that he would be the only lefty in the pen if Milone goes to rotation.
  13. I think we have more depth than many years. Depth that is maybe a half year too young if they are needed to be called up, but it is there if needed. Now if H Perez got hurt then you would be walking on eggshells about the next injury and maybe having problems.
  14. It will be interesting to see how often Thames is used as a corner OF. If they like Thames in the OF/Aguilar at 1B more than Perez in the OF/Thames at 1B, then Aguilar could see a decent number of PAs this year. Otherwise, Aguilar isn't going to see many PAs as "primary power bat off the bench" with the occasional start at first. I would like to see Thames/Aguilar splitting games 50/50 for the first three weeks at least. Aguilar all the lefties and a few righties. That should be enough games played for both to stay/get on track. I could see if Thames and Aguilar are both hot, that Thames could take some Santana and Braun games started when a righty is pitching. I would be hesitant to take too many of Santana's games, time to see what he can be. But Braun needs to be given days off.
  15. Would not surprise me one bit. I attended Sundays game and watched him pitch. He got tattooed as usual. I sat down the right field line by the bullpen. After his start he came down that way sulking. The bullpen coach lit into him about throwing more off speed pitches. Instead of listening Garza gave it right back to the bullpen coach and the two went up the tunnel to the clubhouse. 5 minutes later the bullpen coach came back and Garza didnt. That said, just eating the 12mil would look really bad for the organization. Why would that look bad? First Garza was signed by Melvin. Second, it's 12 million not 20 million. ...... Garza hasn't performed and he's not the best clubhouse guy around. That would seem to be my first thought too.
  16. When not in Miller Park. bluish?
  17. Yeah, but back then, he also pitched quite a few 1+ innings to get those saves. Fingers had quite a few clean up the mess and then stay in for the next inning stints.
  18. Garza is more secure for a rotation spot than Peralta, Nelson and maybe Anderson in my mind. You have to see if he can produce enough to get something for him in July. But once he sucks enough that he will have no value at the trading deadline, it is probably time to cut him outright (I don't know if he would be a good teammate down in the pen). But by then, there may be injuries or other bad play that keep him in the rotation even if he is not great.
  19. Holt? I must have missed something, who is he? Or do you mean Shaw?
  20. At first it may seem like spending money on a closer when we aren't going to win anyways. But I don't think we should just push a young guy into the spot. They need to pitch the 7/8 innings first and prove themselves. And this keeps them from building up saves stat for when arby rolls around. Plus losing in the 9th is a pretty demoralizing, so it would be nice to keep the back of the bullpen somewhat decent.
  21. I don't have any issue with bringing in a bullpen guy to close. It isn't like a current youngster has earned the spot. Plenty of innings to go around next year to earn the spot for the future. I think all the naysayers are really just hoping to get KRod back to close.
  22. I don't think he has enough value "now" that there is a tough call to make. The tough call will be if Nelson performs pretty good up to the trading deadline, how much to absolutely hold out for versus keeping through end of the year.
  23. I assume ESPN is still in their drastic cost cutting mode (losing tons of subscribers), so assuming they are just going cheaper.
