  1. I'm pretty sure the opposite. More than likely they will have a clearer path to playing time in Miami than Milwaukee. We aren't talking about guys that are 29 years old and have been in Milwaukee 3 years that are being traded. The young pups just want playing time in the MLB. Plus, no state income tax in Florida, so you move residence and you are going to save $$ on all your home games.
  2. For 2018. I think after that, you have to wait and see. I kind of assumed we would drive up the price of pitching for the Cubs and Cardinals this offseason.
  3. Do you think players would get rid of the arbitration system to move to NFL type contracts? I don't see the players union ever moving to non-guaranteed contracts. It would probably take the owners guaranteeing a certain total compensation (much more than todays level), getting rid of the luxury tax, and putting a pretty high floor on a teams total compensation, so teams have to spend $75M even if they have a young team (or $150M over two years or something like that). The Suppans, Garzas of the world, would just make sure to have a very high signing and roster bonuses as part of the contract in the first place.
  4. Or Shaw really breaks out with one more season under his belt and if his child gets past health concerns.
  5. The DBacks did trade a real prospect to dump Arroyos salary in 2015. Maybe they aren't dire, but they need to watch the pennies more than most of the other owners?....
  6. If you are replying to me, I did not advocate trading Thames to make room for Choi and I don't think anyone was. But it was mentioned by someone that Aguilar would have to be gone for him to have a chance at the roster, and I think it would have to be Thames that would have to be moved for him to have a chance at the roster. Being a lefty bat.
  7. No, I highly doubt that. Unlikely we trade Thames and roll with Aguilar starting so still no way for him to make the roster as we would bring someone in to play 1B. I’d say it is way more likely we would sell high on Aguilar much like we did with Jason Rogers this opening up a spot for Choi to compete for. I doubt that is going on either though. He is a lefty bat, I assume his splits reflect that. It isn't Aguilar that has to be gone, it would have to be Thames (injured/traded).
  8. As for you will never be convinced, it sounds like you understand the concept, so you are just being old man Shawshank obtuse. First of all, it isn't always a payroll budgeting technique. Sometimes the agent/player wants the money deferred (assuming they get more of it - time value of money). Sometimes the reason to defer contracts may be cash flow reasons for another part of the team business. Just a made-up example, say the team knows they are going to pay for a concourse upgrade three years out, so instead of taking a bank loan (keeping it simple) to cash flow, they just defer some player contracts (assuming the inflation rate used on time value of money is less than the interest cost on the bank loan). The increased revenue from the concourses will then be put back in to assist in player salary in future years. It is very easy to budget your roster, it isn't like these numbers are a surprise - they are known years in advance. The Brewers knew they had to pay A. Ram $3M, KRod $2M, Lohse $2.33M, Garza $2M this year. Even an incompetent accountant can make sure these are accounted for when the front office was putting together their 2018 baseball budget.
  9. Which made no sense at the time, or now for that matter... Best we part ways, but why he didn't get a call was hard to understand. They wanted to look at Wilkerson instead, who has options. That's what you need for your 6th-8th starter types. Yeah but Carlos Torres had 9 appearances in the pen after 9/1. Those could have went to Jungmann. If he looks good in those 7-8 innings, the Brewers are at least trading him for some lottery tickets from another team, even if they don't want him for our team. Edit: I don't know how much potentially the downside cost is. If he gets injured, are the Brewers only on the hook for the 40 man roster min. wage or the 25 man roster min. wage until he is recovered? Maybe the smart thing to do is not risk bringing a guy up that you have no plans whatsoever for.
  10. 60 puts him 7 years younger than Dom Capers (without a dead creature on top of his head). Fangio is 59 so that should be young enough.
  11. I agree with your statement that I am sure if given the opportunity one or more of those options would be great. But, as someone mentioned earlier in this thread, you would also spend quite a bit of the entire season figuring out which one of those options is going to be that true #3 pitcher, which means some bad pitching before that to get there. After last season, I don't see how anyone would want to assume a lost season, going in with a plan to figure out who should be on our starting staff - at least to begin the year. Guys like Guerra and Jungmann, I assume realize that this spring training is "all in" as they won't have 25/40 man spots for all of those options.
  12. I also don't mind the starter that gets blasted every once in a while. There were times last year that every single game was within 2-3 runs for it seemed 2+ weeks straight. I was *almost* hoping to get blown out, so we could save the pen.
  13. I would attribute this more to the top 3-5 hitters in the lineup (pitches 1-15) are going to be that much better than the next hitters.
  14. At 37/38, how much more were people expecting him to get? The wheels have to come off at some point, right? Maybe he is immortal.
  15. Agreed, should have retained Hughes, and I said that before the market went "crazy". Not really "crazy", as it is predictable with all the money out there - this is the new normal. I'm sure big market teams will be forcing a huge bump to the luxury tax the next time they get the chance.
  16. That Jeffress contract is really a good value. The only downside is Counsell pitching him a lot and he earns incentives if he isn't really decent. I don't see why you don't try to keep both, Hughes wasn't going to break the bank. Get rid of Drake.
  17. This is a good point. It takes two to tango. Either the players or at least their agents knew what was going on. No way they should escape punishment. If they do, any time someone gets a PED suspension they just need to say their organization made them do it and they'll get off. I guess I wouldn't punish the players, that probably have no idea how this works and are relying on their agent. Of course if they are keeping their original bonus, I don't see that they should be able to double-dip either though. I guess I don't have the best information on how to handle that. It seems to me that MLB should be able to suspend/punish the agent in some way, shape or form. I see the players can not use the same agent when going back into the pool, but I don't see how that stops agents from continuing down the dark side.
  18. In the case of the Padres it was .250 (.687 OPS, basically same as Nottingham) in A and A-. Don't know about the defense. But yeah, similar enough. Don't know about the other cases. Will someone take him? No idea. I don't know enough about how to evaluate catcher defense, or project offensive skills, to say. But at the same time, what does a rebuilding team like the White Sox have to lose? I am going to assume that Padres catcher was at least good if not very good defensively. I can see stashing a no-hit (now), defensive catcher on the bench for a season that you can put in for the last inning or two and not worry about the defense, but I don't get that kind of impression that Nottingham is that good defensively to do that (at this time). I'm not worried about having too many catchers on the 40 man, as I want the most talent regardless of position, and Susac/Bandy will either hit or be gone anyways. But I wouldn't risk losing someone that matters for Nottingham.
  19. I would cut O.Drake to keep another minor leaguer protected. It seems like a no-brainer to me, so I wondering what I am missing that the coaches love so much. He wasn't that good against lefties that I keep him as a loogy, but if that is what they see, then it seems overkill to keep both Webb and Wang.
  20. I've seen several people pencil in Jeffress and not even suggest an alternative. May I ask why? I don't think he's earned that kind of consideration. I'm not super high on Hughes or Swarzak but I'd definitely take both of them over Jeffress. I agree on Jeffress. Not saying I don't want him, but if I have a bullpen budget, I'd rather have Hughes first. Swarzak and Neshek would be nice. I think we saw how nice it is for the pitching staff to pitch 6 innings and have Hader, Swarzak and Knebel all lined up. Which is why if I am moving Hader to the rotation, I am winning the bidding on Neshek. Here is my best case scenario 8: Knebel, Swarzak, Neshek, Hughes, Barnes, Jeffress. So you can have two of the arms have the usual bullpen implode and still have four good options. Then I can see two spots up for grabs, depending if the priority is protecting a player on the roster, having a lefty, pitching multiple innnings. So two of: Suter/Guerra/Jungmann/Wang/Webb. I can't see T.Williams sneaking into a spot since he has options, unless the other options really fall on their face.
  21. Actually a good chunk of the cost is the new clubhouse/training facilities - which is for the benefit of the major league team. That should help with current player training/injuries and a nice new plush clubhouse/locker room should also be a free agent enticement / retain tool. When you think of actual time spent somewhere, I would think spring training facilities have a bigger proportion of time then someone would give them credit for. I would also agree that the buyout of the contract probably is not too big of a deal. I have never been down to spring training, as that time of year will never work with my schedule - so I have no idea - but if the Brewers are putting this money into the project and it sounds like it includes some park land and university space that it might spark up some interest by other businesses and in a decade it is actually an above average area for economy and safety.
  22. Why? I know Pina had a better first half hitting the ball last year, but I think he can put up close to the .750 ops again. Lucroy had a good obp, but no slugging last year I think Pina is equal if not better defensively. Plus obviously cheaper than Lucroy.
  23. You can never have too many suckers, I mean pitchers willing to pitch in Colorado Springs as the non-prospect, in the clean up roles capacity - whose arm they don't have to baby in any way that won't complain.
  24. What is the word on Alex Cobb? He just turned 30. Had TJ in 2016. He pitched 179 innings this year. Pitched in AL East. Park factor for Tampa? Seems to me to be someone I would be looking at for my first choice. But maybe it is assumed he will have a bidding war?
  25. I'm not sure what you mean by released for very little in ST. The Brewers are on the hook for the full $2.4M regardless if he is on the team or not, right? Maybe you mean $2.4M is little. To me that means if he reverts to no-bat Sogard, they won't feel compelled to keep him around because of his contract. They will just eat the contract. So I don't know why anyone's undies are in a bundle regarding this signing. I guess those that are, wanted a Walker signing instead?.... I'm not even sure the Sogard signing would preempt the Brewers from signing Walker. This just gives them a little leverage in negotiations and if they sign Walker, they just trade Sogard (eat some money) or Perez. I assume Villar is on the roster no matter what to begin the year (there will not be a non-tender), unless some team comes forward to offer a decent trade.
