  1. Not even close? Seriously? Who would it be then? Lucroy? He's gone... Sabathia is probably up there, but Braun has been a fan favorite since he became a Brewer, PED scandal and all. If not Braun, who would it be? I don't think anyone will disagree that Braun is the current player that the fans best know (may be the only player that casual fans could name of the top of their head). Before the PEDs scandal, yes, probably the fan favorite overall. I don't think after the PED scandal, that he is the fan favorite - just best known as I mentioned. That is my take when talking baseball with buddies.
  2. Yes. In fact racking my brain for who #2 would even be. Would have been Peralta, but he has turned things around. Jimmy maybe should have had a stint in the minors too... I still think that Peralta's play is a disappointment. I guess it all depends where you pegged them to begin with. I was hoping for basically 3.75 era type of play from Nelson and Peralta if this team was going to compete sooner than later. Good enough we could trade for a good package or retain and build around. My other disappointment would have been that Santana didn't play a full season. We would have known how he fits in the future puzzle. I don't think you can say how a guy is going to hit longterm until the league has a chance to find your weaknesses, and I don't think 400 career at bats over two partial seasons gets us there.
  3. I assume the scoreboard would have been the most expensive project to date?.... If so, that was $10M five years ago I believe. So whatever it is would be more than $10M of cost.
  4. I found it very interesting that Attanasio mentioned the Dodgers by name when on TV last night. Maybe he spoke out of turn, but I assume he is more savvy than that, and I assume the trade is all but finalized at this point. Which makes it that much weirder that they couldn't get the trade done at the last hour.
  5. Even if the Brewers knew what Broxton would do and knew they were going to be trading for Brinson, I don't think that should change much on the draft pick. Either you like Ray or you don't. The probability is still that Ray is two years behind Brinson. Neither have seen major league pitching yet, I wouldn't assume both will make it. If they do, there is always two other outfield positions to fill. And finding trades to move outfielders is probably a little easier than any other positional trades to accomplish.
  6. I think if someone offered a trade where they valued Guerra like someone that has two more ultracheap good (~3.75era for 175 innings) seasons left in the tank, he would be gone in a second. I don't think other teams would value him like that, so he will be back. But if you are a team that has to count the pennies, he would be awfully enticing.
  7. I remember the Blanco and Moeller years and the years when Kendall would catch every game no matter what, when he wasn't hitting anything more than seeing eye singles. I would still rather spend assets on increasing the production of other positions first, assuming a level of defensive competency for the catcher, as you get more games played out of other positions for your contract dollar.
  8. Your #1 catcher is going to play 70% of the games, whereas when you have a solid positional starter he is going to start 90% of the games, right? That is ~32 games or 28% more games played. Also the catcher position has more injuries than other positions (no stats, just assuming ). They are involved in each and every play, so you want to make sure you have a decent defensive catcher regarding past balls and framing. So, to me, my quick "moneyball" calculation is to not spend assets on the catching position. Give me someone like Maldy and I would be happy. A catcher for $2M that will be at least league average defensively and not be one of the worst 20% of the hitters at catcher. If Susac and/or Pina can be close to average defensively and we can save even more $, with a chance for a better bat - all the better.
  9. Braun will have no-trade protection for all teams May 2017. I assume he might want a little something to give that up, even if it was to someone on the west coast or the Marlins.
  10. I guess I don't get too riled up about strikeouts. Is a player better if he gets conservative with 2 strikes and grounds out instead? Not if there is someone on first.
  11. Considering that this year was his first year strictly out of the pen, I think other teams would want to see more before given him any credit towards being a very good 8/9 guy in the pen. So trading deadline. Plus another half a season of healthy play, I would assume that any 2014 elbow concerns would be gone.
  12. My thought exactly. Between Maldy, Pina, Susac, Pinto, Nottingham I wouldn't even be looking for a catcher in a trade. When we are trading and the best player available happens to be a catcher, fine. Otherwise, I am looking for other positions to fill. You can always find the Zaun, Miller, Kendall for a year or two when we get back to competing and we have a weakness at catcher. As it is, Maldy's batting (using OPS) is better than what 7-8 clubs are sending out there for the most part every night and he has to be at least the middle of the pack for defense.
  13. i don't buy that two or three extra good starts by guys like Garza or Guerra are going to have any positive affect on their trade value. People know what those pitchers are. Three good starts isn't going to change that. I disagree. Those two pitchers still are adjusting their value with each start because of their circumstances. Someone like Nelson or Anderson isn't going to move the needle as much with their last couple of starts. How Garza and Guerra finish the season, would effect their offseason value if the Brewers were to look to trade them. If Garza pitches well to the end, I could see some team (I wouldn't, but there are 29 other GMs) rolling the dice and taking him off our hands for free. If he has a couple of stinkers, I don't see anyone taking him without the Brewers kicking in on his contract. For Guerra, it is just a matter of having enough starts under his belt that you don't have to worry that he is a product of only seeing teams once or twice. And the longer he goes healthy, that eliminates that concern also. I still don't see how the Brewers would get as much value from him as he is worth to the Brewers until trading deadline 2017. If he is healthy and pitches well through then, we should get full value. Making minimum, means every team in baseball would be interested.
  14. http://www.todaysknuckleball.com/inside-baseball-with-jon-heyman/heyman-20-best-trades-last-two-seasons/
  15. I'm torn. I would rather move Garza to open up another spot on the roster for someone to start the season as a starter. If Garza is back, then someone is in the pen like Peralta (maybe that is for the best) or AAA. But, if someone gets hurt or underperforms you may have a big rough patch until you stretch out or get someone like Jungmann, Suter, Cravy and Burgos (if he is retained) ready. If you get to midseason, you could potentially have Hader, Lopez, Wang, or Woodruff ready. So, I am inclined to move Garza now, even if it costs a few bucks to do it, and risk the rough patch as we aren't going to win yet next year anyways. That is unless someone else is moved to free up spots, like Anderson or Nelson.
  16. He's a pointless veteran taking away at bats from two young outfielders. It'd be one thing if it's a situation like Carter where it's a pointless veteran signed because we had no one else there (even though I would've preferred giving Pinto a shot at 1B instead of signing Carter.) Anyone consider maybe the youngsters haven't EARNED that playing time yet? And Arcia earned his playing time? We are playing for the future, we should be finding out more about Santana.
  17. I don't see Brinson starting the year in the majors. He only has basically one month of AAA under his belt total. My guess is that Santana/Broxton/Braun will be opening day starters.
  18. That's fine as long as he's the backup. If he's the starter, it means that offensively he's probably the worst starting catcher in the league. You need to check out what some teams trot out there as there starting catcher sometime. Even some very good teams have had catchers that are having an awful offensive season, Cleveland this year and the Dodgers in years past... There are at least six catchers that have more than 200 ab's this season that are hitting worse than Maldy.
  19. I don't think fall instructional league means Arizona Fall League. Is he even eligible? I don't know the rules on eligibility. But I figured if they went out of there way to mention it, that it was the Arizona Fall League. If it wasn't that, and it was just hitting balls off whatever pitchers are around, why bother mentioning it?
  20. Liriano. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/08/nl-central-notes-bell-peraza-senzel-capuano-nolin.html?fv-home=0&post-id=71006 Milwaukee outfielder Rymer Liriano, meanwhile, has faced slow going after being struck by a pitch in the face this spring. Though he has now begun baseball activities, Liriano won’t be able to make it to the majors this year. Instead, says Stearns, he may be able to participate in fall instructional league action.
  21. Well if he lost a chunk on bad investments or was Madoff'd and has the rest tied up in real estate, whether personal or investment - he may not be very liquid. So instead of selling something before the time is right, he probably sold his stuff, to get some cold hard cash.
  22. Boy is Clancy going to be mad at me now. When they called up Suter, I went back to see how high I exactly had him on my prospect list. I had totally forgotten him and I was going to slot him at 15.
  23. In the end, he might not make a major league starting staff, but he is a real prospect. Take a look, he has been the best pitcher in CS the last season plus and did very well in AA in 2015 before moving up. At some point production can't be ignored and he needed a shot, just thought it would be September.
  24. I would hate to ruin a young guys confidence by jumping a level and starting out in a pitchers league. Let him play half a season in Appleton (not that the early spring cold is much better I suppose), then move up. I would think Erceg would get put in BC to start the year and Gatewood can switch back to 3B again when that happens.
