  1. I'm in Scottsdale today and caught the Giants - Japan game. It really was an excellent brand of baseball. About 6000 fans.
  2. I believe Fetters implemented his "Whatchoo talkin bout Willis" stare-down after he left the Brewers so I don't think he qualifies.
  3. My Mexican in-laws were visiting so I watched the Mexico/Australia game last night while flipping back & forth with the USA/Ven game. The two games were quite a contrast as both Mexico & Australia have limited pitching while the USA & Venezuela have rosters of All Stars. Still I found both entertaining and overall feel it's worthwhile. As pure entertainment the games are much better than spring training games. As long as the participants and managers don't get stupid and overdo it I think it's a good thing. Those that point out the poor timing are correct but I doubt the ratings would be high enough at any other time of year to justify doing it. At this time of year we're craving baseball and in my opinion this isn't a bad entertainment option.
  4. TheCrew07, That was the most insightful, well thought out and superbly documented post I've seen on this topic. I agree completely. Boy, are you gonna get hammered!
  5. Apparently I didn't say the same thing in posts 65 & 67 since I received considerable pushback. Maybe I'm writing in code without realizing it.
  6. I didn't see this coming. Guess he threw me a change up.
  7. "Hall did seem to improve as the year went on". "Seem", did someone use the word "seem"? Seems like an opinion based on watching Brewer baseball. Interesting, I can respect that even if I don't agree with it.
  8. OK Gang, you win. Billy Hall is a Gold Glover who just hasn't been getting his due. The next time he gets an error I'll chalk it up to a vast right wing conspiracy and disregard what my eyes record as Miller Lite induced.
  9. Again, visual evidence is a helpful compliment to stats. Either alone gives an incomplete picture.
  10. I'd have to say Higuera. Didn't he get injured almost immediately after getting his big contract?
  11. Not to try and offend you or anything, but this is not a good mindset. You should always be willing to consider an argument. Objective analysis certainly has its merits, and to completely dismiss it based upon subjective observation is willful ignorance.I'm not basing it on subjective observation. I'm basing it on the fact that he led the league in errors before being platooned. That evidence is supplemented by visual evidence which stats can't completely capture. Example: Weeks defensive stats look deceptively good because failing to turn double plays isn't reflected. However those that watched the games last year understood it was a weakness (no pun intended). Perhaps "you'll never convince me" was a poor choice of words on my part but I find it hard to watch long stretches of poor play only to have it described as above average. If you read back you'll see Ennder clarified that he was describing "above replacement level" and not "above the major league average". I can stretch enough to buy that.
  12. I agree that observation alone would not be a good metric. My point is that if you watch the vast majority of games you should have a meaningful sample size so that observation can be included along with hard data as one of your metrics. In the case of Hall hard metrics alone would not tell you that he stands at home plate admiring every ball he hits near the warning track or beyond. As far as viewing other 3B for comparison if I'm watching Hall at 3B I'm also watching his counterpart at 3B. Some players are bad (or good) enough where observation can tell you quite a bit. Again, sample size is important and hard data to avoid complete bias is also. Good discussion!
  13. Thanks for the elaboration kramnoj & Ennder. I get it, I really do but behind the Nth degree of stats you cite is a player playing the game. I watched almost every game Hall played last year and before. You'll never convince me this guy is above average defensively. In this case this simplest of stats (errors, fielding %) are right. He was below average defensively in 2008 as he's consistantly been from the start of his career.
  14. Apparently errors mean absolutely nothing. He was leading the league in them before being platooned. I realize it's not the only stat out there but it's hard to believe the player leading the league in errors is above average defensively.
  15. Hey, we could have used Carlos Lee the last couple years. The guy is an RBI machine. His stats with RISP beat anything we've seen from Braun & Prince. Sure he might fall off as he gets older but so far he's continued to be one of the best run producers in baseball. We should be so lucky as to have his so-called terrible contract. As for Hall, his poor baserunning and lack of hustle cancel out the rare great defensive play. He has a slow first step and doesn't react well to balls hit slowly in front of him. His range was overrated when he was in centerfield and it still is now that he's in the infield.
  16. I expect to be in Phoenix March 11th and if it works out will attend a game. Are tickets readily available for Spring Training games? I didn't want to buy in advance in case my plans change. Thanks.
  17. Ann Carroll was so nervous that she made me nervous for her. I think she was born for a different occupation.
  18. Hall's injury reminds me of when Bartholomew Bump Bailey ran into the wall and Roy Hobbs got his chance to lead his team to the championship. OK, maybe it doesn't but I'm still pulling hard for Gamel to take advantage of this opportunity.
  19. I'm a real baseball fan and I'm not buying this one bit. The average talent of players in baseball in those eras was nowhere near as strong as it is now. I agree that players are better. I was referring to the increase in the number of Home Runs. It's much easier now so comparing old records with big parks, etc vs modern era conditions is impossible. Guys are hitting more home runs in one season than Aaron hit in two.
  20. Gee, I don't remember much loyalty in the mid 80's when we went from first to last. It didn't take long at all for the stands to empty. Maybe it's better now but 6th seems a bit high.
  21. Plus smaller parks, a more lively ball, diluted pitching and now steroids. Real baseball fans understand that the old home run records were more meaningful. Let them stand. Put Pete Rose in the HOF while you're at it too.
  22. Quite a few pitchers that have had success sometime in the past. Many are potentially damaged goods now though. Bring em in and let the medical staff check them out.

  24. I'd agree except that I've watched him coast into second for two seasons now. A sample size of two years seems reasonably significant. If you watched him closely this year he started busting hard out of the box once Branyan came up. After that I knew it was a matter of time before Hall broke his no triple streak. Sure enough he finally legged one out.
  25. We currently have little to no protection in the lineup after Braun/Prince. Hart has served well in that role at times. Unless the crew can fill the #5 spot with an alternative that breaths RBIs (ala Carlos Lee) I don't see how we can afford to let Hart go. I agree he's been inconsistant but unless we can identify a replacement what choice do we have but to hope the good Corey Hart returns?
