  1. Not sure why you'd use older data and assume it's more accurate than recent data.
  2. I agree. Bush has been one of our biggest contributors over the past several years and gets nothing but criticism. 13 wins wouldn't surprise me a bit as his bad stretches seem to be getting shorter and he's consistantly healthy.
  3. I agree that Fielder is the biggest defensive problem but Hall was leading the league in errors before being platooned. That has to count for something. How many above average fielders have led the league in errors? Not many I'm betting. I think we're splitting hairs as we both agree Hall needs to go. I'm all for a Prince trade now while his value is still high. That should yield us some pitching and improve our defensive options.
  4. Criticizing JJ's defense is really a reach regardless of what numbers you use. How about a common sense approach? Which Brewers infielders don't make you cringe when the ball is hit in their general direction. Pitchers - mostly cringing, Kendall - no cringe, Prince - serious cringing, Weeks - ditto, JJ - no cringing whatsoever, Hall - major cringing especially when he cocks his arm to throw. Simple isn't it?
  5. Has Giles been associated with steroid use? Not an excuse but it could be a possible contributor. I don't care how much time has gone by. A guy that would beat up his girlfriend (especially in public) is way far gone and needs serious intervention to turn him around.
  6. Miles has solid defensive numbers and a decent OBP. Looks like a prototypical utility infielder to me. I'd rather have him than Counsell plus he does seem to kill the Brewers. If he's being signed as a back up then it's a good signing. Didn't we pay Counsell $3 mil a year? I'd take this deal over that anytime.
  7. I only saw a small sampling but he does have a sweet swing. For those of you who are Minor League experts, how much defensive work does a guy like Gamel get during the offseason? Seems like if someone worked on their defense daily and year round he could improve in a hurry. It certainly would solve allot of problems for us if he could play 3B this year but most posters indicate his defense is still too much of a liability. Last year Hall was leading the league in errors before being relegated to a platoon. If Gamel can post similar numbers to Hall his upside would be worth it. If Escobar is ready we'd have the option of moving JJ to 2nd. Trade Prince for some AL pitching and our defense should be better all around. Lastly, I saw Rivera play one game at 1B last year and he handled several tough chances very well. Was that an anomoly or could he be an option? Of course his lower power numbers might make it a bad move.
  8. Would you sign Derrek Lowe for 3/50? Yes definitely, if I can use Attanasio's money. Seriously that's too much for Lowe. I'd rather have Sheets 13 wins and hope against hope that this is the year he doesn't have a late season injury. I have high hopes for McClung & Bush this year but Parra & Suppan rocked my confidence last year. Hopefully we don't keep Soup in the rotation just to justify his inflated contract. If we can get Lowe for 3/36 lets do it. It would buy time until we can build up the pitching in our minor league system. Nobody appears close to ready yet.
  9. I agree with your statement about our defensive improvement by replacing Prince. Failure to dig out bad throws plus being a poor fielder (no pun intended) and a small target certainly hurt us. I can't agree with you about Hall's defense. He was leading the league in errors before being platooned. He once again finished with a fielding average below the league average. Billy is athletic and occasionally makes a highlight film but his failure to make the basic plays kills us. Throw in his attrocious hitting & baserunning and it's obvious we need to make a change. I'd say 2 1/2 seasons of bad play looks like the norm rather than a bad stretch.
  10. Griffey's bat is slowing down every year. He reminds me of Yount or Aaron late in their careers. That's fine if you want to sell a few tickets but not so good if you want to win. I'd prefer to fill in gaps by trading Fielder to an AL Club. If Escobar is ready then move Hardy to 3B. An infield without Hall & Fielder should yield us 5 to 10 wins from improved defense alone.
  11. I was a young kid on a Wisconsin dairy farm when the Brewers got started. Brewer radio was a terrific diversion. Evening milking ran from 5 to 7:30PM so the East coast trip start times were ideal. I moved to Milwaukee in late 81 until 93 so I was around for a World Series and free George Webb burgers. Amazing to see folks stand in line for an hour to get a 39 cent burger but I guess we wanted to say we were there. It's a tough thing to be a fan of a small market team like the Brewers. We have to be perfect in everything we do plus we need some luck. I'm a fan for life regardless. Thanks for asking!
  12. Offense isn't the major issue with Prince. I expect last year is indicative of what we can expect simply because it's rare anyone hits 50 homers. Defense however is a big issue because he's losing mobility as we speak. Also he's a small target at 1st base to begin with. Regarding large athletes, pro football players have a 10 year shorter lifespan than the average male. I don't know what that has to do with player values but I thought I'd pass it along.
  13. When Maddux came over he was quickly able to take some diamonds in the rough like Davis, Turnbow & Capuano and turn them into solid performers. More recently we haven't seen many examples of that (maybe McClung), plus we've seen many pitchers regress back to their old lame form. Whatever he came with he seems to have lost it. A change of scenery might be just what he needs since he isn't helping us much lately.
  14. Right on TwoBrewers, nobody, including women appreciate it when a woman is given a broadcasting job just to balance out a cast of men. Trenni really knew her stuff. You could tell during her post game radio show that she had a genuine enthusiasm and cared about the team's success. When you're filling that much air time you can't fake it. Trenni was a pro and it will be tough to find someone as popular and likable.
  15. "Yes, the impact of hitting coaches is over-rated, but I think they are important in shaping the individual and team approaches to situational hitting; i.e., convincing guys to hit the other way to advance runners, taking more pitches or being more aggressive, shortening your swing with two strikes. Don't care who the coach is as long as he gets them to believe and think about their approach at the plate." Silver, if you're right, which I think you are, then we haven't been getting our money's worth from our recent hitting coaches. I can count on one hand the number of times someone hit to the right side (on purpose) to advance a runner to 3rd. Hopefully Sveum will demand accountability or we'll jettison the biggest offenders to send a message.
  16. If we offered a world class free agent enough to sign him it would be the first time. We could have used Carlos Lee's RBI production last year as well as Cordero's closing ability. Of course we did make Cordero a decent offer but botched the negotiation. Until baseball has a salary cap a signing like this just isn't going to happen.
  17. Overall the return value seems a tad light but I'd consider the deal because of defense. Young & Blalock both have decent numbers which would address two of our worst defensive areas (1st & 3rd) last year. Salty looks like a backup until he can pick up his numbers throwing out baserunners. I'd like to see some pitching in return but better defense could accomplish the same thing.
  18. I've never been a crack addict but I feel like one when I see trades that would involve moving Hall. Since I can't think clearly I'll let a day pass and get back to you.
  19. At least he can play defense which is more than we're getting now. Sorry to see Joe go but he wasn't successful playing part time and it didn't look like any full time gigs would become available. Too bad they couldn't just cut Hall loose instead but perhaps they can still get a bag of balls for him.
  20. I can't see the Royals trading for a below average SS just because he's slightly better than their well below average SS. Hall has no upside on offense, defense, baserunning or any of the intangeables. We can hope they'd be crazy enough to take him off our hands but I see negative value.
  21. Prince's destiny is as a DH. He just can't bend over and it's only getting worse. Trade him to an AL team NOW while he still has some value left. If he packs on another 25 lbs of tofu in the offseason his value will be cut in half.
  22. Hall has a slow first step which hurts him when he needs to charge balls. We saw that at 3rd and last year in CF. He's one of the least disciplined players in baseball. His baserunning, K's and defense have actually gotten progressively worse as his career has progressed. Let's eat what we have to of his salary and move him. He sets a bad example for the younger players. Hopefully at least one team will think like you do piccione and take a flyer on him. He's too frustrating to watch.
  23. Hall has had below average defensive stats at every position he has played. If a team is going to take a flyer on Billy finding his stick then they need to hide him somewhere and shortstop isn't a place where you hide a bad defensive player.
  24. For the most part I thought the ratings were directionally right. I would have given Hall an F and Branyan at least a C plus but I'm sure everyone has a few they would tweak. That being said Brawndo is right. Kendall was only a clutch player when compared to most other Brewers. The only consistent clutch hitter we had this year was Kapler and he's a bench player. It's amazing how far power and pitching will get you.
  25. I'm seeing way too many posts where Hall is penciled in as a starter or platooned 3rd baseman. Even with his higher avg vs lefties his defense kills us. Also we saw many times this year that once the starter is pulled we're either stuck with Hall flailing against a righty or we're forced to use a pinch hitter earlier in the game than we would like. Let's take our lumps with Billy's remaining two years, eat whatever $$ we have to and get someone in that can at least play defense. If Escobar is ready then I'm confident JJ could play 3rd. It may be a more natural spot for him considering his range is limited but he does a good job coming in on balls in front of him.
