  1. Other than turning double plays I thought Rickie showed steady improvement last year also. He seems to have fixed the double play problem this year.
  2. Logan, wouldn't you expect to see a better walk to K ratio from guys you don't consider free swingers? I agree with you on Kendall plus some of the other guys will at least run up the count (Cameron, Weeks) but other guys like Hall average over 3 K's per BB.
  3. Point taken Ennder. I'm not saying we'll set the record but I am looking for signs that our guys are taking a more disciplined approach at the plate. The pitching in our division looks better this year with guys like Harden (full year) and Carpenter looking like his old self.
  4. The Brewers set the MLB record for strikeouts in 2001 with 1,399 K's. They would have to average about 8.64 K's per game to break their record. We're averaging 9 through the first 3 games and have 9 already today. I realize we're a team of free swingers but since mid last season we seem to be taking it to the extreme. In Spring it appeared some of the guys (Hart, Braun) might have found some plate discipline but it's not looking that way now.
  5. Last year I was concerned about our relief pitching & catching but both turned out to be decent. This year I'm concerned about starting pitching & plate discipline. Hopefully Macha will have a positive influence on plate discipline by holding players more accountable. Predictions: 87 Wins (will take 91+ for Wild Card) Player of the Year: Prince Runner Up : JJ Most Improved Position Player: Weeks (his work ethic pays off and new management appears to have him playing more loosely) Pitcher of the Year: Gallardo - the guys been a stud whenever he's been healthy. This is his year. Most Improved Pitcher: Parra - at times last year it started to click. He has the talent. As others have mentioned we have little room for error, especially with our pitching as help isn't quite there in the minors. We need Gamel to have an epiphany at 3B defense and Braun, Hart, Hall & Cameron to show at least a bit of plate discipline. So far, so good with Macha. Go Crew!
  6. My son & I saw Zambrano's no hitter at Miller Park last year. In the post game interviews he made several comments about how it was special to do it in such a nice ballpark. I thought it was a clear shot at Wrigley then and his comments now are consistant with that. Zambrano obviously isn't sentimental about Wrigley, but I'd hate to see it go. Other than the fans I love the experience. I'm sure the financials will yield the ultimate decision especially with an ownership change.
  7. "Honestly, the smug way you just say all this wouldn't bother me if the facts weren't lined up against you on this one. " "That game was televised on my satellite package. I remember the play you are referring to. The Texas telecast replayed that hit. Hall was shading toward the hole on that play and couldn't have flagged that one down with a broom not could any 3rd baseman alive or dead." Gang, I'm going to respond to your points and then let it go since I seem to be pushing this discussion in a negative and non-productive direction. I apologize if I appear smug in my postings. I respect your views and understand where you're coming from. My intention was only to illustrate what TheCrew07 did an excellent job (much better than I) of illustrating. Stats are imperfect as is pure observation. I don't believe stats such as UZR can capture much of what happens in a game. Granted my example was subjective but I was sitting with my son directly in behind home plate and thought with a dive he could have potentially gotten a glove on it. The paid employees charting pitches behind me thought the same thing and they likely see many more games than we ever will. Another example is Rickie Weeks issues with turning the DP last year. It's an area that stats don't generally capture. Sorry if I offended anyone. I appreciate the insights you bring and inciting a good back & forth was all I intended. Guess I better be more careful about what I wish for. Play Ball!
  8. "Except that you only haven't been eating crow because of the point JBriggs makes If everyone spent all year watching 90% of the 3rd basemen, they'd realize that Hall's more than adequate defensively. " The other 90% didn't LEAD the league in errors. I'm talking ALL players and not just 3B. Again, I'll let Billy's play speak for me. Catch you back in a couple months or so. One final item which I think illustrates my point. The stat guru's on this board love to point out how Hall's range offset's his errors. I went to the game last Friday night. Hall's playing 3B. Texas has a runner on 2b with one out. The hitter hits a hard two hopper about 2 feet inside the 3B line. Hall made no effort to get to the ball. Even if he couldn't make the play at 1B, if he would have gotten a glove on the ball it would have kept the runner from scoring. Do plays like that (which are the norm for Hall) show up in UZR? It's not an error but it potentially cost us a run.
  9. I'll be the first to admit I was wrong if that happens. I'm sticking with my story that Hall is a liability at 3B but let's all watch and learn together. Hopefully I'll be eating crow but I haven't for the last two years. I'll check in from time to time to see how we're doing. I'm sure you'll all do the same.
  10. I recall he had a weak arm and couldn't go back on balls hit over his head. That forced him to play deep and balls landed in front of him. I don't like Gwynn but I don't see how Podsednik is much better. I'd have to go with Duffy if those are our 3 choices.
  11. I see some other posters beat me to the punch. I respect your knowledge of stats but sometimes things are so blatantly obvious that we can overanalyze them. If you watch Hall for even half a season you'll do what I and the others do and cringe whenever a ball is hit in his direction. Hall was leading the league in errors last season before being platooned. I know errors don't seem to impress you but are we to believe the player leading the league in errors is above average defensively? Hall would have to have the range of a grey whale to make him above average. Can't buy it.
  12. We need some defensive stability while our young guys continue to develop. Some like Weeks & Hall may never be average defensively so a solid defensive outfielder like Cameron helps both in games and as a role model. The guy's a pro. Cameron, Hardy, Kendall and maybe Braun are about the only regular players I'd consider above average defensively. Considering we don't have pitchers that garner a lot of Ks that seems more critical now than ever.
  13. I went to the games last Fri/Sat and watched McGehee play the games and interact with the fans. He seems like a down to earth kid that's done the work and is ready for the bigs. I think the Brewers made the right choice. There aren't 100 Mike Lambs out there but there generally are a few. Casey's upside is better and his defense looked solid. On Friday night he played 1st and Hall played 3rd. Hall made a couple throws that Casey had to scoop. Would have had the potential for some conspiracy theorists on this blog if he would have missed them.
  14. Bill Hall is a good third baseman.I thought we weren't supposed to joke around on Brewerfan.net. I'm cool with it but you owe me one.
  15. I agree Logan. When Hall stands at the plate and admires balls that land on the warning track turning doubles into singles or triples into doubles I consider it a lack of effort. Others had similar examples but I never saw anyone pulled the next game. Poor plate discipline led to zero apparent consequences also. I wasn't looking for Yost to call out his players in public but it would have been nice to see a sign that they were being held to some kind of standard.
  16. Thanks for the insight TooLiveBrew. I'm grasping at straws hoping we can finally have solid defense at 3B. Seems like we haven't had it since Molly had to move to 2B/DH. Does Don Money have a kid?
  17. Considering we've been conditioned to Yost's style of treating players like they are made of glass, a new manager who holds players accountable is going to seem over the top. Yost had the excuse that the team was young and their confidence couldn't recover from a sit down or a lecture. The team isn't quite so young any more and Macca doesn't appear to believe in giving guys a pass and hoping they will come around. He'll pay for that with some fans but for others it will be a breath of fresh air. Different strokes for different folks.
  18. All this tells us is that we don't have a prototypical lead off man. Guys that work the count, bunt and have more BB's than K's just haven't been the type of guys we've been running through our organization.
  19. So far they're quite good although their 30 Clubs in 30 Days analysis of the Brewers was a bit shakey. Liked seeing Plesac & Trenni again though. The only downside is that their Packer coverage is lacking.
  20. I agree McGehee is a question mark but so far I like the upside. I assume the biggest concern with a young guy with limited MLB experience is his defense. Last year he played a handful (13) of games in the bigs without an error. His minor league stats look fairly solid but I'd like to get some input from the board stat gurus on that. Is it fair to compare minor league defensive stats straight up with MLB stats or are minor league defensive stats deflated because of poorer field conditions, less saves by the 1B, etc.? Appreciate any insight.
  21. DeFelice is supposedly working on developing a change up to go with his excellent cut fastball. Last year I saw one cut fastball after another. If he can develop other pitches he could be a nice option. If not I'd take McClung over Suppan. McClung proved late last year that he can perform relatively well in the clutch. It seems questionable as to whether Suppan can hold up for an entire season anymore.
  22. I'm in Phoenix and thought I'd drive over to Maryvale Park today. I have to catch my flight before game time though. Do you think I'll see much or be able to get close to the players a few hours before game time? Just thought I'd check it out since I'm 10 miles away.
  23. It surprised me also but being at the game I could see the terrific turnout by Asian fans from both the Giants & Japan. It certainly was a nice PR move for both teams. I thought Japan would save their pitching and get hammered but they won 6-4. Perhaps they just have more depth since they're more of a true national team than most. Very solid defensively also.
  24. Does it seem like the first sign of Spring every year is Counsell lighting it up at the plate?
