  1. I'm rooting for Valentine, with Cora as my second choice. Cora would be a real shocker though considering D Melvin's preference for experience. The smart money is on B Melvin
  2. Mark Rogers looked very impressive at the end of the season. I'm wondering what the logic is of pitching him in Nashville next year? If the problem is innings, can't his innings just be limited in Milwaukee? i.e. have him skip some starts utilizing off days early in the season so it doesn't mess with the other pitchers in the rotation, or have a long reliever make a few spot starts against lesser opponents? I want the Brewers to start out 2011 with the best possible rotation, and starting Rogers in AAA seems like a waste. I don't get the whole "injury risk" thing either as a logical argument if his innings are limited. Isn't pitching in AAA just as hard on the arm as MLB? If anything, his health will be better taken care of in Milwaukee in terms of better facilities, better training staff, easier modes of travel etc If the Brewers see 2011 as a rebuilding year and they want to limit Rogers' service time, well thats an entirely different scenario, otherwise I just don't get it Clue me in here
  3. No stats to back it up unfortunately, but I do believe Josh Gibson was the greatest catcher ever
  4. Rank Player (age) Adjusted OPS+ Bats 1. Babe Ruth+ 207 L 2. Ted Williams+ 190 L 3. Barry Bonds 181 L 4. Lou Gehrig+ 179 L 5. Rogers Hornsby+ 175 R 6. Mickey Mantle+ 172 B 7. Albert Pujols (30) 171 R Looking at that list, only Mantle and Pujols played their entire careers in an integrated league (again Barry Bonds does not exist in my hypothetical all-star team world). Pujols definitely deserves big consideration as one of the all-time greatest
  5. While I love Ted Williams, he probably wasn't even the best player of his decade due to his defense. He even admitted such. Williams would likely have to be a DH on this hypothetical All-Star team (though I spose Ruth might be a DH, too). Having a Willie Mays or Ty Cobb in CF might protect the weak fielding Williams, though While going through some stats on Baseball Reference I noticed Tony Gwynn on the top 20 all-time for career Batting Average, not saying he's the greatest or anything but found that interesting
  6. How much do you downgrade Braun based on his OPS way down to near .800 so far this year?
  7. Well, theoretically A-Rod should get some consideration at 3B over Schmidt, though I personally would downgrade the steroid guys pretty considerably (in my "imaginary league" Barry Bonds has been banned) I like the mention of Rickey Henderson. Players like Rickey and Ty Cobb could do serious damage on the basepaths hitting ahead of the likes of Ruth, Mays etc ... and I do think players from segregated eras can and should be *slightly* downgraded, though I do think Ruth would be a monster in any era, and would completely tear up 5th starters (as just an example) A little suprised that Ken Griffey, Jr hasn't been mentioned much. OK, he's not the greatest of all-time, but I think of Griffey, Jr and Mickey Mantle as 2 guys you would really want on your team if you couldn't get Mays I personally agree with some of the old-timers who say (stats be damned) that Willie Mays was indeed the greatest ever when you consider the complete game he brought to the table And personally, I'd probably have to go with Brooks Robinson at 3B
  8. One of the big advantages with Ruth, if you completely buy into the notion that you are forming a "team", is that Ruth was an incredible pitcher, too. Theoretically he'd be a guy you could bring in to pitch a few innings in relief or even start occasionally
  9. Theoretical question: you are forming an All-Star team of the greatest baseball players to ever live. Who do you pick? And more importantly, why? If you are in a "draft" situation, picking second, and team #1 takes Willie Mays, who is your pick? Ruth? Ted Williams? Pujols? Ty Cobb Or maybe instead you pick a pitcher, in which case who? Where does Ken Griffey, Jr rank in the conversation?
  10. I'd like to see wholesale changes in the coaching staff. Seriously I'd like the whole bunch replaced and none of them hired as the next manager. That said, I think Willie Randolph will be the next manager of the Milwaukee Brewers
  11. Joe Inglett = Magruder
  12. the Crew needs to go 29-19 the rest of the way to get to 82 wins. Not out of the realm of possibilities but not likely. We'll see...
  13. yeah, ideal location for a AAA team when they sell out every game of every season for years... Cardinals-Reds, don't like either of those teams. The best case scanario for the outcome of that psuedo brawl would have been 4 or 5 both of those teams' best players getting suspended for an extended time, but alas When the Reds play the Cardinals I root for an 18 inning game so that both teams wear out their bullpen
  14. Thrilled to see Edmonds gone. It'd be different is the Brewers were an AL team and Edmonds could DH, but Edmonds has no business starting in CF with an injured achilles.
  15. I wonder, if this had happened a week before the trade deadline, if they would have been desperate enough to overpay for Prince?
  16. Sincerely I think you have a better grasp on stats and how they effect baseball than I do. And I can't argue with the above in regards to the NL teams mentioned. However I would point to Tampa Bay and the White Sox as 2 teams who are in the playoff race in part specifically because of how well they steal bases and utilize speed on the bases (along with pitching and defense of course) It is a heckuva lot easier to score from 2nd on a single than to score from first. It is also decidedly impossible to score from 2nd by tagging up on a fly ball. The Brewers have players like Escobar and Gomez who are elite baserunners being completely underutilized (plus Braun, Hart & Weeks). I believe that that the Brewers would score more runs if they ran alot more
  17. Yep, that's the whole egg in a nutshell right there. Fire Ken Macha = problem solved
  18. In 212 PA. Yipee. 99.99999% of the population couldn't do what Arod did with any amount of drugs. Hundreds of players likely juiced and the vast majority didn't come close to 600 HRs. If you want to say it's horribly tainted, I'm with ya. But if you want to say Vizquel's accomplishment was more impressive, not even close, IMO. How many humans have batted .290 + at the age of 43 in MLB history? Probably 0.001% of the population, right? Now, how many have done it with 10 Gold Gloves sitting at home? hmmmm I'm more impressed with Mike Schmidtt hitting 548 than a Juicer hitting 600
  19. I think today illustrated perfectly why Manny Parra would most effectively be used as a relief pitcher
  20. I think Parra would be much better utilized in the bullpen
  21. Juicer I'm more impressed with Omar Vizquel batting .293 at the age of 43
  22. I'm optimistic, as well, especially about 2012-2014, but my optimism is more in regards to having Gallardo, Amaury Rivas and Jake Odorizzi in the rotation with Jeffress, Braddock and Axford in the bullpen.... I'm not (yet) convinced that Weeks will sign an extension, though it'd be cool to see. I'm also not convinced that we will get a great young pitcher for Prince. Maybe/maybe not
  23. He'll get it together. He needs to listen to what Dale is inevitably telling him: to stop chasing pitches out of the zone and take his walks. It would probably help him to sit for a day or two. I wouldn't sit him in Wrigley though, that stadium is a slump-buster for a hitter like Braun Maybe this will end up being a down year for him, but I think he'll finish strong in these last 2 months
  24. Considering that Gamel displayed great range at 3B and his main problem was throwing errors, I think Gamel could be an elite level fielding first-baseman (as long as you can live with a few errant relay throws home). I think range and glove-work like Gamel is capable of would be wasted in the outfield (where his arm could be more of a liability too)
