  1. I think this is the most likely scenario. Maybe Gamel starts the season in AAA but I think he plays the Inglett role, too. As it stands now the Brewers once again have only one starter who bats lefty in Fielder (unless Dickerson platoons in Center and Counsell starts alot vs righties, both of which wouldn't come as a shock) No way would I trade Gamel with Prince being 99% likely to leave
  2. Which does nothing but prove how faulty defensive stats are. I suppose Prince Fielder's defensive stats equal out to "not horrible", too?
  3. Surprised anyone is suggesting that Gallardo be our #1 starter on Opening Day. Greinke is clearly now our ace. I'm not even convinced that Yo is better than Marcum!
  4. Gomez appears to be a player who can steal 70-80 bases in a season if he can up his on-base percentage. That and Gold Glove capable defensive ability will get you plenty of chance in MLB
  5. I've been a very big critic of Doug Melvin and have called numerous times here and elsewhere for his firing and I am completely thrilled to be proven wrong. So: yes, all is cool
  6. Chapman is the wildcard in this discussion. He could be poised to be on a level of Randy Johnson (or not, but he does have filthy stuff). If Chapman becomes one of the best in baseball like I think he might become, then its tough to say. The Cardinals staff is maybe more proven than the Brewers staff. On potential alone the Brewers staff is likely the #3 staff in the NL behind the Phillies & Giants (I think Lincecum is the best player in baseball, stats be damned, the Freak is a freak in the clutch) but potential doesn't win you Championships. I think Marcum will likely surprise many (but not me) and post an ERA around 2.87 ... If Gallardo can pitch like we all know he is capable of, for a full season, and if Greinke pitches like the Cy Young type ace he's capable of, the Brewers will go very far (still alot of "ifs") The thing is, the Brewers have more hitting than just about anyone. We don't actually even need all of our pitchers to have career years to go deep into the playoffs
  7. Priorities change in a blink of an eye, while I'm all for extending Fielder & Weeks, first you try to extend Greinke & Marcum
  8. I am absolutely thrilled with this trade and I suspect Brewers ticket sales will skyrocket in 2011. I'm a huge Alcides Escobar fan, maybe one of Escobar's biggest fans here, and I will miss him, but I think this was an incredibly great trade for the Brewers. Can't wait to hear over 40,000 people in Miller Park chanting "ZACK, ZACK, ZACK!!!!"
  9. The Red Sox overpaid bigtime. Last I checked it was the Giants vs the Rangers in the World Series ... not ready to panic The Red Sox will be stuck with that contract for 7 years with a guy who relies on his speed. When Crawford is 34-35-36 years old he will not be much more valuable than a Mike Cameron type. I say let teams like the Nationals & Red Sox overpay for corner outfielders. Pitching wins championships anyways.
  10. with Marcum on board I say we send a bunch of prospects to the Royals for Greinke! (Not likely, but wow that would be a huge upgrade in our rotation). Then we keep Fielder and go for it '11
  11. I'm very happy with this trade. I think the Blue Jays got fleeced. Their #1 pitcher for an unproven prospect with serious defensive problems? Thank you Mr Melvin... Marcum's ERA & WHIP in '10 & '08 (he missed '09) were superior to Gallardo's ERA & WHIP in '10 & '09 and Marcum was pitching in much much tougher division... (Gallardo did have a better K/9 in both years) While I think Yovanni has a higher ceiling, Marcum just might be our ace in 2011. The Brewers got much better today
  12. I suppose I'm one of the few people outside of Reds fans who really likes Joe Morgan as a broadcaster
  13. The more I read about Roenicke from various sources the more thrilled I am with this hire. A brilliant mind, sees things before they happen, great rapport with players, a quality person, I like hearing that... I'm ever the optimist but perhaps the Brewers just hired their version of Mike Holmgren
  14. I think this is a sign that the new manager is in place and Sedar isn't part of the plans
  15. After watching the San Francisco Giants dominate the post-season, I am all for giving up young hitting prospects for great pitching. Granted the Giants' staff are all home-grown, but the bottom line is you need great pitching to compete in MLB. Even the Rangers with as great of hitting as they have would have gotten nowhere without Cliff Lee I would, for the same reason, be hesitant to give up Odorizzi, Rivas, Jeffress, or Rogers however...
  16. I think he is a very smart baseball man but I won't miss the cheesy handshakes at first base when a Brewer player got on base. There, I said it...
  17. I think this is a horrible idea and I genuinely think Bud Selig is one of the worst commisioners in any sport ever (the All-Star game deciding home field advantage in the World Series, his handling of the steroid era, etc). I hope Bud Selig retires soon and enjoys a wonderful retirement surrounded by friends & family. I wish him no personal ills, I just think he is terrible for MLB. Part of what makes MLB special as compared to other major sports is that there are less playoff teams! The regular season means more!
  18. I think the Brewers will name Bobby Valentine their new manager within the next 48 hours
  19. I'd move Braun to 1B to make room for Nelson Cruz! oh.... whoooops (!) I don't envision Hart as being very agile in getting after ground balls, although we are pretty used to a below average fielding Fielder at 1st base these last few year (and please don't quote me fielding stats, where is the fielding stat for "grounder that any major leaguuer should have that never touched the glove") Casey & Gamel don't really have the power you'd want from a 1B. I say we trade for Greinke, sign Cliff Lee, hire Bobby V, keep Fielder & Weeks and go for it in 2011 with Yovanni as arguably the best #3 starting pitcher in MLB ...and then the alarm clock goes off and I have to wake up and go to work, so I'd say: if you don't keep Fielder, just sign a power hitting free agent like a Dunn. They are fairly easy to find
  20. With his talent he is a buy-low candidate most definitely. His free swinging ways will likely scare down his trade value among most MLB GM's...that and the eating, yes...
  21. Gamel has been a "streak" hitter quite a bit in the minors. I think those numbers will get better with regular playing time
  22. Wolf was the exception and a good signing, as was Hoffman. But then there is Suppan, Doug Davis, Gagne, L Hawkins etc etc
  23. thank God that Jack Z is not the Brewers GM
  24. thebruce44 : so we're banking on Rogers being a significant part of the 2017 Brewers and don't care as much about the start the Brewers have in 2011? Isn't Rogers already clearly better than Narveson/Capuano/Parra?
  25. thanks... OK, so essentially it is about service time, and I get that. However, what if Fielder isn't traded? (I see that scenario as possible considering his trade value might not be as high as the Brewers wish). What if they bring back Fielder for 2011, one more year to "go for it" as the PR will be spun in the fans direction. Seems to me that you want to start out with the best rotation possible in April/May, get off to a fast start, not be essentially "out of it" all season like the 2010 Brewers were. I realize alot of all that depends on what other moves are made. Alot can and likely will happen between now and late March Manipulating innings in AAA is easier, good point....
