  1. This is true. I think the Brewers would be smart to trade Randy Wolf at the deadline this year... He might bring in even more than Prince... who knows, if Davis turns things around we might even be able to get something for him
  2. I tend to be an optimist which is a valuable commodity because being a Brewer fan ain't easy I think in some ways the organization might have already changed "formats" in emphasizing pitching in the farm system, we aren't seeing it yet at the major league level because those pitchers are still a few years away Melvin has made some brutal mistakes with Suppan and selling low on the 3 H's (Hardy, Hall, Hart)... *well technically he hasn't "sold low" on Hart yet, I'm saying that dealing Hart after his all-star appearance would have been a stroke of genius. Of course, hindsight is 20/20 I think Mark A influences trade & signing decisions based on attendance, which gets in the way of "big picture" long term development As for trading Fielder: His value is going down this season as people are beginning to question his talent level as he's great one year and then just "pretty good" the next. Fielder is also ironically not much of a fielder either. Look at Mark Teixeira's trade value in recent years, and realize that while Teixeira has similar hitting stats as Prince (remarkably similar career numbers actually) he is a gold glove fielder and he didn't bring all that much (relatively speaking) in trade value and I think some Brewers fans (including myself recently until I started researching this stuff more) are a little unrealistic in what they think the Brewers can get for Prince... Melvin's genius signing of Ryan Braun keeps me from calling him a terrible GM
  3. Well at least we're done with playing at San Diego until the playoffs (hows that for delusional optimism!!?) My thanks to you all for helping me stay at least somewhat entertained during a brutally terrible baseball game...
  4. "we're just 2 grand slams away from tieing this baby up!" get well soon, Bob Uecker
  5. Well yeah, probably. As I joked earlier, our Racing Sausages are by far better than any other franchise's between inning gimmicks On a serious note, at least we have much more potential than the Nationals, Pirates, Atsros etc ... we're playing that poorly now, but we have more elite players or potentially elite players than those franchises do hopefully... maybe
  6. My concern is management and ownership will fear that precise reaction from fans and won't explore the possibilities. Could Casey bring a good solid A ball or AA pitching prospect? Or, could he be added to a Prince trade to insure bringing in an elite prospect or three?
  7. Since I've railed so much about the mistakes of selling low on players like Hardy, Hall and now Hart (i.e. not trading replaceable players at the peak of their value), I would advocate that this year's trade deadline or at the latest in the off-season after this season would be the perfect time to try to trade Casey for prospects... But what would his trade value be (if he continues to hit at a .300 + clip with good power and stays healthy)? We need more pitching in the future more than we need Casey right now, especially with Gamel as a prospect
  8. You really think Attanasio was behind all those moves?Generally speaking, yes. I think Mark A sets a certain tone and direction for this team, and while he wants to win he doesn't seem willing to build for a few years to do so. It seems as though he operates under a fear that certain moves will cause the fans to say "same old Brewers" like they did back when the Brewers would trade a Sexson for prospects. If the Brewers had traded Hall & Hardy when their values were high it would have affected attendance. When Turnbow faltered, I bet Mark A said "get us a closer"
  9. The only thing that will make Mark A change his approach is revenue. i.e. if the fans stop showing up. He is by his very nature a money manager and tigers don't change their stripes. We've seen this again and again, selling low on Hardy and Hall, completely unnessesary trades like aquiring Co Co Cordero (that team wasn't headed to the playoffs, we didn't need to trade Carlos Lee for a closer), giving one year fan favorites big contracts (Hall, Turnbow), etc
  10. I sincerely believe that is exactly what happened in '06, '07, '09 and this year so far, too ... how else do you explain some of these crazy trades and signings that have gone down?
  11. Nope because Mark A is scared it will effect attendance.
  12. I agree. I predicted 79-83 before the season, but on another board I mentioned that I thought 79 wins might be too optimistic. yeah, if this team keeps looking like this we might need to include some Spring Training W's to get to 79 on the plus side, if this keeps up, Macha will be gone (searching for silver linings)
  13. Because the Sausage Race is better than any other franchise's between innings gimmick? Struggling for answers here...
  14. I apologize, I haven't been up on Sheets' most recent games. We're talking about a very small sample here, he was a good solid pitcher in his first 4 starts, including giving up just 2 earned runs in 6 innings vs the Yankees, and the game before that where he gave up 0 earned runs in 6 innings vs the Orioles... gives me reason to believe that the possibilities of Ben Sheets pitching like the old all-star pitcher he was, are still high. He'll turn 32 in July But anyways, yes I'd have much rathered they gave Suppan and Gagne and Hall's money to Ben Sheets. Or Prince Fielder. The point being, those were horrendous signing that coupled with selling low on Hardy and Hall have handcuffed this organization for a few seasons and wasted much of the Prince Fielder window I do give Melvin credit for the Ryan Braun signing, that was arguably his greatest move as a Brewers GM
  15. Yes every team has a 4.50 ERA guy in the #4 or #5 spot in the rotation but not every team spends $10 million a year on a veteran 4.50 ERA guy like Suppan and puts him as the # 2 or #3 spot in the rotation, especially a small market team Bottom line is the money spent on Suppan, Gagne, and Hall could have been much more wisely spent (like on Ben Sheets!) and that along with hiring Ken Macha is plenty enough reason to fire Melvin. Throw in giving away Nelson Cruz in a trade that made little sense, misjudging Nelson Cruz vs Corey Hart, selling low on Hall, Hardy, De La Rosa and others, and the reasons start piling up
  16. For the record, I'm a bigger Salome fan than a Lucroy fan and mentioned that earlier in the thread. Lucroy is hitting very well for average this year (and OPS at least in this small sample of a season) but I think he's going to cool off in AAA here pretty soon... I'm very intrigued with Salome's power hitting potential, I think overall the minor league stats point to Salome being at least as good of a hitter with more home run potential Lucroy, in AA ball last year he had 32 doubles, 9 HR's, .267 BA, .380 OBP, .798 OPS Salome in AA ball in 2008, he had 30 doubles, 13 HR's, .360 BA, .415 OBP, .973 OPS a world of difference? Maybe not, but a pretty big difference last year in AAA in his "down year" Salome's power stats were down but still had a .286 BA, & .334 OBP I like that Lucroy can get on base. .383 career minor league OBP is good to see (Salome's career minor league OBP is .365), they both have a career OPS right now of @ .848 That said I'm very glad that both are in the Brewers system and I wish them both great health. It'll be interesting to see, if Lucroy keeps raking in AAA, what the Brewers do in a month or so...
  17. The Cleveland Indians' logo is very offensive to many people
  18. Well, yeah sure, although some retire and some get hired by other teams when their contract runs out. I certainly don't think we need to worry about some other MLB team stealing Ken Macha away anytime soon What I should have said is that Macha's firing either this year or next is inevitable, it is just a matter of when. Mark A has already shown somewhat of a propensity for a short leash. When the Brewers' uninspired play starts effecting attendance, we'll see a change real quickly. Mark A is by his nature a bottom line type of businessman
  19. Ken Macha is my least favorite manager in the history of baseball, and the team now seems to give up on games where they are down 4 or 5 runs. His firing in inevitable, its only a matter of when. And Melvin should be the next to go, for hiring Macha in the first place I miss Yost's fire. But his handling of the pitching staff was brutal. I sincerely blame Yost for wearing out Ben Sheets
  20. The money spent on Suppan, Hoffman, and Hall alone could have been put into signing a pitching ace, or signing Prince longterm. Hoffman was great last year but that didn't put us over the top to being a playoff team. I just don't think a small market team can afford to sign a closer (let alone an aging closer) to $10 million per. The Gagne/Hoffman thing is the mark that shows that Melvin is in over his head I just don't think we'll get much further until we replace Melvin and Macha
  21. Demoralization equates to high expectations: with Melvin spending precious money on aging pitchers and Macha at the helm, this is about where I would expect the Brewers to be... they'll get it together to maybe be 82-80 but what you see is wqhat you get, they are who I thought they were
  22. Agree with Ennder, the NFL is a shell of its former self and a testement to the mediocrity that "parity" and a salary cap has brought to pro football... Because the game is so different, I think MLB would fare much better with a salary cap, but absolutely not, I do not want to see a year off (And I think the chances are better that Jose Canseco will be named the new MLB commisioner than the propsal as presented by the OP)
  23. Macha and Melvin's inability to figure this out coming out of spring training is among the reasons I want them both gone
  24. Braun's potential is as a Triple Crown winner, he showed that in his rookie season. Years 2 and 3 had him playing like an All-Star while dealing with nagging injuries and having pitchers adjust to him... it would make sense for him to continue to improve in his 4th year I think Braun, if he can stay healthy, can be one of the greatest hitting outfielders of all-time. Seriously
