  1. That made my pride hurt less. Let's get a few more while we're at it.
  2. Eh, maybe not Soriano. I'm not too worried about it. He struggled down the stretch last year, and he certainly isn't the pitcher he was five years ago, but I'd be very surprised if he fell off a cliff over the offseason.
  3. I like the idea of Edmonds hitting 2nd and giving Gomez a day off. However, this has to be one of the worst outfield defenses in the majors...
  4. McGehee's defense worries me a bit already. I wasn't able to watch many games last season, but from watching the first few games this year, his glove looks very weak. Even on the play in the (1st?) that Brian and Bill raved about, it looked like he moved very slowly. I just wonder how much range he has out there. On the plus side, Escobar looked great tonight. 2-2 after four games, three against the Rocks and one against the Cards is a decent start. Yeah, that one hurt, but I'm sure the Rocks felt the same way after Wednesday's game.
  5. Gotta love the difference between the MLB and NHL when it comes to disclosing injuries. As a hockey fan, I'm lucky to hear anything more than "upper-body injury" (which could be anything from knees to head). If I ever had to miss games for sneezing, tearing a phone book, or having a pillow that just isn't quite soft enough, I would probably move to Barrow, Alaska and change my name.
  6. You beat me (and the rest of this board) to it. Let's go poultry hunting. http://http.cdnlayer.com/smoola/00/00/d2/f126b2c8478fe0ad_m.jpg
  7. What defines a "true fan" in your mind? I'm guessing a "true fan" is never allowed to question the decisions made by a team's upper management.
  8. Who are you referring to? Shouldn't a fan want the best possible team to be on the field? I don't see nearly as many "we'll boo him off the mound because he is a bum" as I often see at NSBB over players who are significantly better than Gazpacho.
  9. Maybe they meant fifth starter on the T-Rats.
  10. Great way to start the season. Time to wait for some epic sCrUBS failure tonight.
  11. But the situation of the game still determines whether it is better to sacrifice the runner to third or not; in the fifth inning of a one run game, it is probably better to go for the big inning.
  12. I never understood the logic behind this, are runs worth less in the early innings? I think in all situations except late innings and down by a lot you should take a run that you can score without getting a hit, which only happens when you have R2 0 out or R3 1 out, not exactly the most common situations. No, but consider the following options: Inning: bottom 1, tie game, [80% chance of 1 run or 20% chance of 0 runs], [30% chance of 4 runs or 70% chance of no runs] Inning: bottom 9, tie game, [50.1% chance of 1 run, 49.9% chance of no runs], [50% chance of 2+ runs, 50% chance of 0 runs] In the second case, choice 1, there is a 75.1% chance of winning the game, and for choice 2, a 75% chance of winning the game, assuming each team has a 50/50 shot in extras. Thus, the 1 run play is a better option, although the second option has a higher mean runs scored. In the first case, I won't compute the odds on winning, but the mean runs scored in case 1 is .8, and the mean runs scored in case 2 is 1.2. In this case, the 1.2 runs is most likely the best choice. *NOTE: I know these situations are not exact, reasonable, etc, but this is a quick and dirty example of why it is not always better to go for one run.
  13. Because they are down by 1 and have a chance to score a run without getting a hit which should be taken advantage of I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that in the 5th inning they'd be better off not going for one run.
  14. Right, but I don't see why they would be playing for one run there. I don't know how I feel about Gomez bunting for hits as often as he does. To a certain extent, I would think that a player like Gomez who is a threat to bunt for a hit would see defenses drawn in, leading to a higher BABIP on non-bunt ground balls. To me, whether the attempted bunt for hits are worth it is whether or not the benefit of the bunt hits and increased BABIP on non-bunt hits can outweigh the outs made while attempting to bunt for hits.
  15. Looks like $2.00 still buys you a damn good cup of Coffey.
  16. http://greggzaun.com/ The website tells me he is the greatest baseball player of all time. The internet doesn't lie. Seriously though, I remember Cubs fans railing on Prince Fielder after he went 0 for 7 in his first 7 (or more?) at bats in 2006. Give the man some time, he's a pretty solid ball player.
  17. I'll give Zaun more than seven at-bats before comparing him to Kendall.
  18. Sounds like that's the case. I live in the Cedar Rapids area, and the Royals, Cardinals, Brewers, White Sox, Cubs and Twins are all blacked out. CSN is available here, so I understand blacking out the Sox and the Scrubs, but none of FSMinnesota, FSWisconsin, FSMissouri, or FSKansas are available on any cable package I've seen in this area.
  19. Levine's just preaching to the choir in New York. They love this kind of crap over there and I'm sure at least a few of the Yankees fans who actually pay enough attention to see this have found a new favorite executive.
  20. Only got to hear the 7th and 8th innings, but I'm just happy to have baseball back. It's one game in a 162 game season. Yo must have been decent, and Gomez had a great day (heard his homer). I'm already looking forward to being able to watch the game tomorrow night.
  21. I'd love to see a team of these guys play a whole major league season. No way they could top 50 wins (Sheffield doesn't count).
  22. Gameday says there was a delay after Weeks' at bat. He isn't injured, is he?
  23. Another instance of the Brewers putting the Cubs to shame.
