  1. When I lived in Iowa we had no local team on cable, but MIL, CHN, CHA, STL, MIN, and KC were all blacked out, so I didn't subscribe.
  2. Gazpacho was the nickname that just never caught on...
  3. Huh, always thought Theriot broke into the league at 23 or so, didn't realize he was more like 28 in his first full season. Can't say I blame him for not wanting to ride the bus at age 35.
  4. The favorite is probably Francisco at this point, no? I still think we'll see somebody else there come opening day, but none of those names individually strike me as all that likely.
  5. If those incentives are mostly structured around health, I'd rather not have Hart around. Five million guaranteed to a player who didn't touch the field last season is quite a chunk of change for a guy who is really only a slightly above average player at this point (he'll be 32 by opening day).
  6. I think Kentucky's one-year wonder team in 2012 is not the norm -- correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the only real "one-and-done" style team that has won a championship since Carmelo Anthony's Syracuse in 2003. Carolina has had only two (I believe) one and doners (Brandan Wright, Marvin Williams) since Roy Williams arrived, and Duke I'm not sure has had more than a few (Austin Rivers, Kyrie Irving's 9 games) although that will rise soon. 2009: UNC (Sr., Sr., Jr., Jr., Jr.) 2010: Duke (Sr., Sr., Sr., Jr., Jr.) 2011: UConn (Jr., So., Fr., Fr., Fr.) 2012: Kentucky (So., So., Fr., Fr., Fr.) 2013: Louisville (Sr., Jr., Jr., Jr., So.) UConn was really not a great team either, the field pretty much cleared for them. Not sure about going back further, but outside of Kentucky 2012 I just don't see the one-and-done dominance, at least on the court.
  7. At this point, Wisconsin has looked good. Duke has been horrendous defensively. Kentucky has had their problems, and Kansas is looking terrible against Florida. They may not keep it up, but I won't be at all surprised if Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas can't get it figured out before the Freshman all leave.
  8. There's a ton riding on the opener vs. Ghana. If they don't win that game, I don't see any way they make it through. If they can beat Ghana on day 1, and Germany knocks off Portugal, they'll be sitting in a good spot. Otherwise...not so much.
  9. David Price's foot, let me introduce you to David Price's mouth...
  10. Woah...that sounds weird.
  11. It's probably also worth remembering that Trout played 20 or so fewer games than Cabrera last season and has played 8 more than Cabrera this year, so that's another point in Trout's favor.

  13. There might be something there, and there might not. There are 300 or so FT players in the league, so even if nobody in the league is truly better with RISP, we should expect a few to appear to be better. There's a term for this which I'm forgetting. The basic idea is that if you take 300 fair coins and flip them all 20 times, you'll end up concluding that several are unfair using conventional hypothesis testing on each individual coin. This is a similar issue to claiming the Brewers' home record a few years ago was so unlikely it must have been cheating. While the odds of any individual team putting up such a ridiculous home record like the Brewers did that year are really low (probably 1-2%), given that there are 30 teams in the league, the odds that at least one team puts up an abnormal record are pretty high. So in that circumstance concluding that the Brewers had some absurd home field advantage (sign-stealing or stadium sauce) would be fallacious. That's a rambling explanation. If anybody knows the term for what I'm explaining, I know there's a good wiki for it. So basically...Craig may be a magic man with RISP, but I'm not comfortable making that conclusion based on his RISP split.
  14. It is worth giving some weight to Gennett's abnormal power surge, though for me that means upping my Scooter Gennett slugging expectation from .375 to .400 or so. I thought he would be a 3-5 HR type of player, and now he looks like he might be a guy who can get into double digits (hopefully teens with some growth).

  16. More accurately, Weeks is paid like a post-arbitration average starting player. I'm guessing that he's something like 4th out of 10 qualified post-arb 2B's, but I don't want to look up the numbers.
  17. Yuni and Kotsay couldn't even play one position well though, so it's not really fair to consider them as players who had value because of their defense. Again, I'm not saying Gennett is anything more than a piece to round out a roster, but based on what I've seen I think he's somewhere between replacement level and an average MLB player. Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic about his defense being near average though; I haven't watched too much through the last few months and if he's a significantly below average defender that erodes much of his value. The front office will be able to watch him closely for the next month, and hopefully they feel they have enough information to have a decent idea of how good he'll be defensively going forward.
  18. Having guys like Gennett at $400K a year to fill out the roster rather than guys like Yuni B, Cesar Izturis, Mark Kotsay, etc is definitely worth something. His current Zips projection is a 95 wRC+. In the run environment we've been seeing over the past few years, a .280/.320/.380 line is pretty decent for a guy who is going to round out the lineup.
  19. Yes, given that Rickie Weeks seems to be toast at this point (I held out hope for a while this year), it's looking like Gennett may be a nice option, even if he isn't particularly exciting. Even the pessimist in me sees a line of .270/.310/.370, and if he can put up that type of line and play average defense for the league minimum, he's a nice asset.
  20. Even if Braun admits to doping back through his college years, I'll still imagine that the truth is worse than what he's let on. Heck, if he admits that he shanked a dozen puppies last week, I'd bet he actually shanked two dozen. I'm expecting a Lance style admission, where he "comes clean" but still denies using for a portion of his career where he actually used (newsflash: Armstrong wasn't clean in 2009 and 2010). I think this is getting to the point where I don't know if I want him around anymore, despite him being one of the best players in the game signed to a team-friendly deal. I really don't put up a big fuss about PED's (again, K-Rod's domestic violence is worse than PED's, but nobody cares). But seriously...this is getting ridiculous. I've ranted about the scumbaggery of Lanceyboy for nearly the past decade, and I don't think it's right for me to flip-flop on Braun just because he's a Brewer. I have no idea what he could do to restore his reputation. Maybe tell the league to erase his entire career and opt out of his contract, and re-enter the league as a clean 30-year old "rookie", if that makes any sense...But I don't know. It would need to be something drastic.
  21. I personally don't care that much about PED usage. The way Braun has gone about this whole situation is pretty disgusting though. While I don't doubt that Olney is kind of a clown with an agenda, please realize that (i) Olney being a clown and (ii) Braun being a skeezeball are not mutually exclusive. Braun is now officially Lance Jr. in my mind, and that ain't good.
  22. They're still 11th in ERA, 15th in FIP, and 13th in xFIP in the NL. They've been better of late, but they have not been good by any means.
  23. 'Bout time for this, no? If you didn't see the 'MURICA game vs. Bosnia, you missed out. I turned it off after Altidore tied it at 2-2 (not my choice!). That's a very good result against a good Bosnian team. First premier league fixtures this morning. The Bundesliga season already started last week (Yup, Bayern still looks really good). There are four US internationals playing for Stoke, so that's a good lower-table team to follow. Geoff Cameron was the only one who played today (he started) vs. Liverpool in their 1-0 loss. Brek Shea, Juan Agudelo, and Maurice Edu also play for Stoke. Altidore started for Sunderland today. I have the game on in the background. He's had a couple of solid chances which he hasn't been able to do much with. Just made a run in the box surrounded by about five Fulham defenders but couldn't get a good shot off. Arsenal looks to be going down. Laurent Koscielny was sent off, and Benteke has scored twice on penalties (one was a rebound). NBC's coverage looks to be really good so far. You can use a valid username from most cable services and watch all premier league games in very high quality on tablets, smartphones, and computers. No longer do I need a catalog of streaming programs just to watch the premier league!
  24. What's the over/under on people here who still say we don't have enough evidence to say Braun used after he makes his statement? I don't think this is the type of situation that is forgotten with good performances on the field.
