  1. First off, I really don't care if Braun took anything. I'd give it a 95% chance that he was taking at least some banned substance, but that really doesn't matter. The fact that MLB is going after these guys in this way is just absurd. Personally, this type of garbage turns me off of Major League Baseball more than steroids. But I have two questions which have probably been addressed before: 1) Given that Braun already won his appeal from the drug test at the end of the 2011 season, can MLB even attempt to suspend him again for what amounts to a similar time period? Or, in my dummy legal words, is there anything in the CBA that rules out this type of double jeapordy? 2) Braun has never been suspended for an infraction. So it should be a 50 game suspension, correct?
  2. Anybody following AS Monaco? Their stadium holds under 20,000 fans and they were just promoted from Ligue II. Here are their signings so far this summer: Radamel Falcao ~$70 million James Rodriguez ~$60 million Joao Moutinho ~$35 million They also brought in an aging Ricardo Carvalho, though he was probably not too expensive.
  3. Should we really be that concerned about Weeks' option vesting? He's hardly on pace for 600 PA's this season and now Gennett has been called up and will start seeing some playing time. Weeks has struggled horribly this season and was mediocre in 2012, and he's been injury prone for most of his career. Even if he starts this season and next, a few days off here and there for minor tweaks, as well as scheduled off days, ought to keep him under 600 PA's without raising too much ire from the MLBPA. A vesting option at 600 PA's in Weeks' case isn't that far off from a straight club option. Simply put, it will be easy for them to assure the option does not vest if they don't want it to.
  4. Didn't see it, but that's a class move. Weeks has always seemed like a good guy to have on the ballclub.
  5. the absolute best case scenario in my eyes...Scooter turns into Joe Morgan. The absolute best case scenario in my eyes...Scooter turns into Sandy Koufax.
  6. Gotta imagine that's the case. Weeks isn't quite on pace for 600 PA's this season and he was starting from day one. It's probably not too tough to find enough scheduled off days and days off for minor injuries to get them out of that vesting option without getting a mouthful from the PA, even if they played him like a starter. Honestly though I hope they keep starting Weeks and finish him around 550 PA's this season. I like Gennett and he seems like a player everybody should root for, but right now I can't help but see a player who has posted a 88 wRC+ this season in AAA and a sub .100 ISO being a contributor. Obviously I hope he'll succeed in the majors, but I'd rather he spend the entire season at AAA.
  7. Not a big trade, but can't complain when you get a decent role player on the cheap. Looks to put up better numbers than Yuni and is five years younger.
  8. Yuni has nearly 200 PA's with a .250 OBP...a nd he is not the whipping boy. That is bad news folks.
  9. Agreed. This is unfortunately accurate given the state of the franchise. We could be looking at a long five to seven years...
  10. Rluz, clearly you have no knowledge of reverse mojo-ology! They will lose every game in June, at best go 6-21, and Weeks will not reach base once!
  11. \epsilon and (27 - \epsilon) Perhaps that's too optimistic though.
  12. When was he last Brewer with a six hit game? My memory may be fuzzy but I don't recall one in recent years.
  13. With Hart hopefully coming back soon I'd rather just keep him in AAA for the season. If he continues to hit, he'll get his chance to be an opening day 1B next season.
  14. Loretta struck out about half as often in the majors as Bianchi did in the minors. They may have similar power, but it's going to be really tough for Bianchi to hit anywhere near .300 over the course of the season like Loretta often did if he does not curb the strikeouts or develop some power. Loretta also posted a career 8.5 BB%, and I don't think Bianchi has that type of patience. I just don't think we'd even be looking at him as ever having the potential to start at 2B over the course of a full MLB season if Weeks weren't struggling.
  15. I'm not sure what else needs to be seen out of Bianchi. He's going on 27 years old and he doesn't hit with almost any power and doesn't walk. Weeks may be done, but Bianchi is not a viable option at 2B going forward.
  16. First world problem: Going to the beach starting Saturday, not sure if 4G coverage will be good enough to stream final outside.
  17. Can we turn this back into the random news thread? This is a good discussion, but I'd rather be able to spend my time here making fun of the Astros! The Astros have allowed 6.14 runs per game, worst in the majors. The Blue Jays have allowed 5.15 runs per game, second worst in the majors. They are incredibly bad, and I'm following them in hopes of the infamous 120 loss season.
  18. I'm really interested to see how many games the Astros can lose this season. I know they're probably not a 120 loss team talent-wise, but they might be a 105 loss talent level, so if there's any team that can do it, I believe it's the Astros.
  19. That's a bit curious to me. Perhaps it has something to do with run environment of low vs. high scoring teams?
  20. While nobody should have expected Carp to be this productive, or Overbay to a lesser extent, either of them would have been a nice pickup for the first two months of the season. That said, it's probably worth remembering that the Brewers did have an insurance 1B and a LHP off the bat lined up until an ACL tear.
  21. I'm still not sure why they didn't acquire a guy like Ishikawa for the first two months of the season. I can't imagine they would have needed to give Baltimore more than a bag of balls for the guy, and he would have at least put up a solid line against RHP. But with Hart coming back in just a few weeks, what's done is done.
  22. Given that Lalli has pretty much no value to this team, I'm happy they sent him down. But why wouldn't they rather have Rob Wooten + $1.5 Million?
  23. That may be so. They're both the same age so I expect they'll both develop a bit more power. It's hard to know how much power Segura has right now but based on what we've seen it wouldn't surprise me if he has a bit more than Castro, who hit 14 HR's last season. Their plate discipline numbers look very similar (OSWING, ZSWING, etc.), but Segura has been better at drawing walks so far (7% vs. 5%).
  24. Offensively they may well end up putting up similar slash lines, but Segura looks like a far better defender.
