  1. Ah yes, we know we're getting close to baseball season when we can start to get annoyed about losing a marginal relief pitcher due to a lack of 40-man roster spots. I genuinely missed this.
  2. These are the types of "veteran presence" signings I really like, where the veteran signed on the cheap is actually a pretty solid ballplayer. I don't expect him to hit a ton, but he's got a bit of pop. I haven't been on for a few days, but I wonder how much time he'll get at 2B and 3B. I don't think he's ever logged a major league inning at either position but given his skill set he should be able to be pretty solid so long as he's completely healed. Obviously his role depends a great deal on what they decide to do with Green, but I could get used to the idea of having two guys that can play (most) of the infield if need be.
  3. I really enjoyed me some MLB.tv last season. We just got our RokuXD (they're only like $80) and haven't tried out the MLB.tv app but everything streams on it in very high quality so I suspect it will work well with MLB.tv too. If you don't mind cords, you can always just plug an HDMI cable from computer/smartphone/tablet into the TV, which only costs about three dollars.
  4. Kenpom had an article up about Ryan Evans today. I haven't watched him shoot FT's, but it must be almost like he has the yips or whatever they call it when a catcher can't throw it back to the mound. To be fair, he's still better than UNC "starter" Desmond Hubert, who is 4/27 (14.8%) in his career. I mean honestly, I could probably work on free-throws for fifteen minutes on my driveway and hit better than 4/27, and I'm abysmally bad at basketball. Duke has looked horrible over the past two seasons without Ryan Kelly. Over that time, he has missed seven total games. Here are the results of those games: 3/3/12 vs. UNC L 88-70 3/9/12 vs. VTech W 60-56 3/10/12 vs. FSU L 62-59 3/16/12 vs. Lehigh L 75-70 1/12/13 @ NCSU L 84-76 1/17/13 vs. GT W 73-57 1/23/13 @ UMiami L 90-63 The smart money is on Miami right now to win the ACC, which is pretty incredible given the league's history.
  5. I've suspected this for a while now. The Brewers were (i) the team with the best medical information on Marcum and (ii) in need of another starter. That they weren't willing to sign him to a presumably affordable (~$7MM) deal is pretty telling to me.
  6. Yeah, he probably just hates playing in the dreariness of a Midwestern spring. I mean, it's not like he has any reason to give a good effort with his contract expiring next offseason.
  7. Of course, but it's still worthwhile to consider whether we can effectively reduce those risks without taking actions that are excessively costly. It's also obviously important that players actually do understand the risks they're facing. When it comes to soccer, I don't see any effective way to reduce concussions. The jury is obviously still out on whether the NFL can do so without altering the game too much. Back to the topic, I usually expect that with these sports stories where an athlete repeatedly says he is innocent, he's full of it. In this case though I'm leaning toward the theory that Te'o was in a moderately significant relationship with this girl and embellished it when speaking to the media, but that he wasn't in on the hoax. I wouldn't be surprised either way, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and not hold it against the guy because it seems fairly likely that he got Catfished.
  8. Frustrating, but with a competent replacement in Gamel losing 6 weeks of Corey Hart is not going to significantly worsen this team's playoff chances. Hopefully Gamel makes the best of the opportunity.
  9. Tokoto has been averaging 11 minutes this season and he's been at about that level since ACC play started. If he develops the way he should, he'll have no trouble finding minutes even if he doesn't start over the next four seasons. He probably moves a spot down the depth chart if Wiggins decides to commit, but he's a four year player and he will certainly have a chance to make an impact.
  10. I'm counting Yuni.
  11. Serendipity is really good.
  12. I got a chuckle out of the panoramic camera application on the new iPhone. I actually like it, but the camera feature on the original Galaxy had that same feature. I don't know much about programming, but I suspect that it would take all of ten minutes to program an app that could do that.
  13. Milton Bradley is facing up to 13 years for assault. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/story/_/id/8836221/ex-player-milton-bradley-charged-domestic-abuse
  14. Most of those look right on to me. Segura's projection strikes me as a bit optimistic; I'll be pretty happy if he posts a ~.315 wOBA. So what's the general thought on who fills out the rotation? I'm assuming 1-2-3 is Gallardo-Fiers-Estrada. Fangraphs has Narveson-Rogers, but I'd rather see Peralta in either of those spots to be frank. I wonder how long Shaun Marcum has to hang around before he gets a call from Mr. Melvin...
  15. I've felt that way for some time now. Deliberately pushing (or at the least supporting) management to keep black players out of the major leagues is clearly the greater evil, and may have well created an even greater statistical advantage for early ballplayers.
  16. Biggio's at 68% with 21.5% of ballots in, and he's the leader. Don't old-school guys typically vote for 3,000 hit guys on their first ballot? Does Biggio have some character issue I'm forgetting about? He seems like an obvious guy these folks would vote for.
  17. McGriff just misses for me, although I can certainly see an argument to let him in. Sosa's a marginal HoF'er to me so with all the added crap I'm not voting for him. I don't like milestone voting when it comes to 500 HR's, as in recent years we've seen a lot of marginal players who have a shot at eclipsing 500 (Adam Dunn). Bonds, Clemens, Piazza, Bagwell, Biggio. (and...probably McGwire if I'm being completely objective)
  18. Dickey has a 3.08 ERA in the past three seasons. He is hardly a one year wonder.
  19. It's been 70+ degrees here for the past four or five days. We're driving to Madison for winter break and spending three weeks up north. I'm scared that I've already become a wuss.
  20. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/dodgers-sign-hyun-jin-ryu.html Anybody have a scouting report on him? I know he's generally highly regarded and Korean. That's about all I know.
  21. I hadn't realized Dempster had already turned down those offers. Still though if they can snag him for 2/$25 I'd be happy.
  22. You know Wisconsin's having a rough year when they fall out of Ken Pomeroy's top ten (they're 11th).
  23. Dempster's very attractive on a 2-year deal. I'd project a 3.75 ERA or so in about 200 innings, which would slide him into the rotation behind Gallardo and maybe Fiers. If he can be had for 2 years and about 20 million or a bit more that's a very good deal for the Brewers. That's a major chunk of cash for a guy that isn't anywhere near as valuable as a Verlander or a Hernandez. I don't think it's necessarily a bad deal for the Dodgers but it would be a terrible one for the Brewers.
  24. The way college coaches are moving between NCAA programs this offseason is pretty similar to how players move up the ranks in the English Premier League and other European soccer leagues. If you're on a mid-table club and have one or two good years, you'll probably be transferred to a stronger club. The SEC is the biggest fish in the pond right now and I don't think anybody doubts that. Look at where coaches go after a good year. Larry Fedora lead Southern Mississippi to a 12-1 season in 2011. This season Carolina hired him as their head coach to a 7-year deal. He went 8-4 and put together a top 20 recruiting class last season. Reports say that yesterday he interviewed for Tennessee's head coaching job. Chuck Strong, who just lead Louisville to a BCS appearance, was also interested in the position, but signed an extension at Louisville yesterday. It's rumored that Gundy (Ok St.) was also offered the Tennessee position. You expect to see guys move from non-BCS schools to major conference schools (NIU and Kent State's coaches just took jobs at NC State and Purdue). I just don't ever remember seeing BCS coaches bolt to other major conference programs (okay, SEC) like we're seeing now.
  25. Crew, any idea why the coaching staff didn't try and get him to focus on improving 3 or so pitches rather than having a 5-6 pitch repertoire? Seems like he might have been better off trying to work on those pitches in the minors for half a season or so.
