  1. That's about where I sit. Should a NYY/STL World Series take place, I might just withdraw from society for a bit. Should that happen, I will decide society must withdraw. <--- (Bain voice)
  2. I hadn't realized how close he would have been without that little slump. Of course, Posey could probably bump his average up to .340 or so by taking out a slump. But yeah, Braun is a guy that really could win a 3C. Before this season I wouldn't have ever bet on him leading the NL in HR's, but with his power surge this year he obviously proved me wrong. He's an incredible player, and he's in Milwaukee until about 2050. There's a good chance he retires as the greatest player in Brewers history.
  3. 23, Trout. I don't think this should be difficult, but that's why these discussions are fun I suppose. Both were similarly dominant offensive players. Both put up seasons that would be worthy of an MVP. Trout was an elite defender while Cabrera was a poor defender.
  4. I don't see why you even need to consider advanced metrics to give the edge to Trout. He was about as productive offensively and played elite defense in CF, while Cabrera played poor defense at 3B. Not to mention, Trout was a monster on the basepaths while Cabrera was Cabrera on the basepaths.
  5. Here's one reason the triple crown argument should be used to justify giving the MVP to Cabrera over Trout: Let's say I view Cabrera as the most value player because of the triple crown, so I decide: Cabrera > Trout Now, what if Josh Hamilton had hit 45 HR's but otherwise had an identical season, so he'd clearly be far behind both Cabrera and Trout in terms of candidacy for the MVP. Then Cabrera wouldn't win the 3C and I wouldn't view him as the MVP (would anybody be making the Cabrera argument if he didn't win the MVP?). So if Hamilton just connected two more times, I'd be voting: Trout > Cabrera If you vote to give Cabrera the edge solely because of the 3C, that means that your relative ranking of Trout vs. Cabrera depends on Josh Hamilton. Why should Josh Hamilton's performance have any effect on how you rank Trout and Cabrera? It's really cool that Miguel Cabrera won the 3C this season, even if RBI's aren't a good measure of offensive performance, as it holds a major amount of historical significance and hasn't been done for decades. That's hardly sufficient to justify giving him the MVP over Trout, who was the better player this season.
  6. Part of me would like the league to go back to the AL champ vs. NL champ 9-game series. It would really hurt the chances of the Brewers winning a WS in my lifetime and probably cost MLB a disgusting amount of revenue, but teams that only win 83 games don't deserve a chance to win a WS.
  7. Well, it's day one of the offseason and here we are. Here's my take on the non-pitching roster/lineup: RF Aoki RHP/LHP 2B Weeks RHP/LHP LF Braun RHP/LHP 1B Hart RHP/LHP 3B Ramirez RHP/LHP C Lucroy RHP/LHP CF Gomez RHP/LHP SS Segura RHP/LHP Bench: Gamel 1B, Schafer OF, Morgan OF, Green IF, FA UTIL?
  8. Well we had interesting baseball through late September. This team deserves a big ovation at the end of the season.
  9. I just gave a bigger fist pump for a Chicago Cubs home run than I have for almost any Brewers victory this season. Now, about that blown call at 1st...
  10. This was huge. The Brewers go into Pittsburgh for three games while the Cardinals host Houston and the Brewers don't lose any ground. The Dodgers are down 3-1 in the fourth to WSH right now. The Cardinals have six in a row vs. the Cubs and Astros before finishing the season vs. Washington and Cincinnati. It's going to be tough to gain any ground over the next week but they really need to pick up at least a game during that time. Whatever happens, this team better get a great ovation after game 162. I think just about everybody here was in 2013 mode after 120 games (with good reason), but they've just kept going at it and kept mashing. I never thought we'd enjoy meaningful September baseball after the Greinke trade and falling to 54-66. Ain't baseball great?
  11. Well, hopefully Braun will get a boost from the crowd that thinks this performance is so much more impressive because he has a complete slouch hitting behind him. That, or they'll say Braun has always had great protection so we can't really know if he's that good. Voters have gotten better about this stuff, but we're still only a few years away from Justin Morneau winning an MVP.
  12. I'd be far more amazed if Suppan's Erdos number were only four.
  13. I think they did the same with Braun, who I believe also failed to qualify as a super 2.
  14. At this point, I think both Gallardo and Marcum pretty much have to be in the playoff rotation, should it come to that. With only 120 IP or so, Estrada could probably be the third man in the rotation. I think Estrada would be a better bet than Rogers in the postseason anyway, so I don't think I see reason to try and bring him back, even for bullpen duty. The bigger question to me is what to do about Fiers. It'll be interesting to see if they bump him up a few innings.
  15. Someday I would like to have on my business card: Dr. Funketown, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Empirical Throwing Analysis.
  16. If Gomez can be a .250/.300/.450 guy next season, which might be a bit optimistic but isn't far off his projections, he'll be a very valuable player. For the first time in his career, I'm confident in saying that Carlos Gomez will be a solid everyday player.
  17. They were just ahead of the times.
  18. He doesn't respect the game. We need to teach him class by throwing baseballs at his head. Duh.
  19. Well that sucked.
  20. Clutch posters don't exist. Looking at Weeks' career, this season doesn't even jump off the page anymore. It's moved from "horrendous/disaster season" to disappointing season in only a couple of months. If this team competes for a playoff start next season, Weeks will be a major factor, and it'll come at a cost of only $10 million.
  21. Is CONCACAF the easiest federation to qualify from? They get 3.5 bids and only have two teams in the top 40 of the current FIFA rankings. That or AFC, who gets 4.5 bids. CONMEBOL qualifying is awesome to follow, because it's brutally difficult. They only have 4 teams in the ELO top 10 and 6 in the ELO top 20, yet they only get 5.5 bids this year. USA vs. Jamaica tomorrow should be 3 points, but you never know. Dempsey will suit up as far as I know.
  22. I don't suppose you can change the delivery address, can you? Boy, it would be like Christmas every day!
  23. Estrada will almost certainly be a starter in next year's rotation, won't he? In 240 career innings in the majors, he has averaged better than 9 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, he's put up a sub-4 ERA over the past two seasons (~200 IP) combined, and Zips projects him as a 4.25 ERA guy. He's absolutely proven himself to be a viable rotation guy. It's hard for me to be too optimistic about Rogers because he struggled in AAA this season with his control, but he did a great job in 40 innings in Milwaukee this season. I think he deserves a chance as the fifth man in the rotation next season. Gallardo-Fiers-FA-Estrada-Rogers could be a pretty solid rotation.
