  1. I watched a bit of the USA-Argentina game (I was at a friend's house and he didn't get NBCSN) on NBC's online streaming service and the quality was horrendous, to the point where it would have been difficult to see the ball on a 50" screen. Eventually we just switched over to a sketchy stream and the quality was significantly better.
  2. I've always enjoyed the parade of nations, which shouldn't be a surprise given that I was a big time geography dork when I was in elementary school. Other than that, I don't really get it. I enjoyed the games, but boy do I wish the big events were televised live. I know they got good ratings, and perhaps 90% of people don't really care that much, but for me it's just not worth it to stay up to 11:00 PM or so to watch the events on tape delay (please don't laugh, I do go to bed at 10:30 or so). As for the medal counts, 'MURICA!
  3. Also, driving several miles to save 2c/gallon on gas.
  4. [sarcasm]I agree that you like what you've seen of Segura's defense.[/sarcasm] I think he's looked pretty good at SS; he's shown some decent range on a few plays and turned that beautiful DP pretty naturally with Weeks today. Along with the good gap power we saw today, I think we should be pleased with how he's looked.
  5. He's only two years older. I doubt the Sox will pick up the $22 million option, so he might be somebody to keep tabs on. It's hard to gauge how the market for Peavy will develop due to the fact that he only threw ~100 innings each season from 2009-2011, but if the price is right maybe Melvin makes a play here.
  6. [sarcasm]I was hoping we'd get him back next season, clearly this team wasn't the same without his veteran presence.[/sarcasm] But seriously, this may be one of the more pointless moves in recent memory. It's not like other teams were waiting for the season to end so they could swoop in and steal Mark Kotsay. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/08/padres-to-extend-mark-kotsay.html
  7. I've never minded paying $7 or whatever it is at MP to tailgate. One of the things I miss most about living in Wisconsin is showing up to a Wednesday 1:10 PM start at about 9:00 AM, getting front row parking, playing catch and grilling sausages for breakfast and then lunch before the game. I've never had much of a problem with drunks at Miller Park outside of opening day and a few of the Cubs games when the Cubs fans actually cared enough to show up to Miller Park.
  8. I'm really hoping they call up Fautino De Los Santos, mostly just because I want to see what he has to offer. He has 51K:17BB in 41 AAA innings this season. Control is obviously a concern with De Los Santos. With De Los Santos, Henderson, and Axford all looking at bullpen roles for next season, one thing this club won't be short on is power arms out of the pen.
  9. It would probably work better to have him giving a beating to our young arms, rather than taking one for them.
  10. It's probably worth noting that at age 27, Gomez' defense will only get worse from here on out. I imagine he'll age fairly well though given his athleticism.
  11. I'm not rluz, as far as I know, so we should be safe from the 0-30.
  12. $60/$50.... 450 AB sounds good. Just a friendly reminder Gobias . Weeks now hitting .218/.330/.383 for a wRC+ of exactly 100.
  13. Branyan was released by the Yankees today. He hit .309/.438/.655 in 137 PA's in AAA for the Yankees. Oh, the injustice!
  14. What purpose does Hector Gomez serve on the 40-man? Now that we have Segura, they can easily drop Gomez from the 40-man should they want to bring up a guy like Burgos.
  15. Probably. If you look at the number of runs given up by other relievers who have pitched 30+ innings, Loe 3.94, Veras 4.80, Parra 4.70, Dillard 4.38, I'd say Loe, Veras, and Parra have been just a bit disappointing and Dillard has pretty much been as expected. K-Rod and Axford are both at 2-2.5 ER/9 above where I expected them to be.
  16. Hey look, a ball leaves the yard! In other news, Weeks' wRC+ is now a cool 100. He has been on an absolute tear this last month and a half or so.
  17. Well, I might consider an innings cap of 200 but it's obviously not likely he'd greatly exceed that number anyway. Let him go to 160 innings this season, and then finish his last start. That will give him around 105 IP in the majors this year, and should give him a decent chance at the ROY if he keeps this up and Miley falters even a little bit.
  18. Betemit's a decent offensive player, his Zips projection is .258/.318/.417. He's a pretty horrible defender as far as I know. From what I gather, Machado is a very good defensive SS, correct? He's not exactly tearing up AA right now (~.775 OPS), but apparently he plays in a pitcher-friendly park in a pitcher-friendly league. I'm not sure I see the need to rush him if he's going to be at 3B, because I don't think his bat will even be league-average right now.
  19. He hasn't "arrived", as in finally lived up to his potential as a .275/.325/.475 type of hitter, but I've certainly adjusted my expectations for Gomez slightly upward. He's hit about .240/.300/.400 in ~700 PA's since arriving in Milwaukee, and going forward it wouldn't surprise me if he hit something like .250/.300/.425. Add to that elite defense in CF and I don't mind the idea of using him as an everyday starter next season.
  20. Personally I don't understand why more players don't sign guaranteed deals rather than waiting for FA. If you could have one of the following opportunities, which would you take: ($25 million with probability 1) or ($50 million with probability .7, $20 million with probability .20, $500,000 with probability .10)? I'd take the first without blinking. But, I suppose when it comes to values in the $10+ million range I'm quite a bit more risk averse than professional athletes tend to be. Greinke is laboring a bit today against the A's. His total pitching line with the Angels is now 16 IP, 12 ER, 8BB, 14K.
  21. I feel like I hear more about Harper on ESPN than Trout, but maybe that's just me. Trout is a year older than Harper and has been easily the best player in the AL this season, even accounting for the fact that he missed ~20 games to start the season. Needless to say they ought to be talking about Trout far more than Harper, because he's having a far greater impact on the game right now. If I were a Nationals fan, at this point I would have wished Harper would have stayed in AAA for a bit longer. I guess I feel like when you have a prospect like Harper you'd simply rather have the guy from 20-26 than from 19-25. Of course, their outfield is pretty bad without Harper and they are in the middle of a pennant race, but you have to wonder whether he would have been better off taking a standard road through the minor leagues.
  22. Speaking of Ishikawa, he's only had 6 PA's since July 21. I almost forgot he's on the team.
  23. Actually Wolf only gave up two runs through his first four innings. As far as I know, that's the last time his ERA was below 5.
  24. Handball is by far the least creative of the class of games with goals at each end. Every other game like this has some interesting twist: In soccer, you can't use your hands, in hockey they play on ice, lacrosse with a stick, basketball with a hoop, water polo has water, etc. To fix Handball, I propose that they release a very angry Rottweiler onto the court at the start of every game. Don't tell me you wouldn't watch.
  25. You can basically bring in anything that isn't alcoholic. The only thing I would buy at the park is beer or icecream. I always bring my own soda and usually bring in food as well. Usually Jimmy John's. I have brought in brats. I always bring in ketchup and onions when we go to dollar dog games. The last time I went to a game, I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...
