  1. Somebody really ought to make a cartoon for the newspaper over there that's a big fish Colon eating a little fish Cabrera.
  2. I also wondered immediately if the Brewers gave Wolf the option of pitching out of the pen. He'd be a more effective innings eater than Livan Hernandez. The garbage with Kottaras was annoying, but Wolf was pretty productive during his first two seasons in Milwaukee, and quite frankly if Wolf would have put up a ~4 ERA this season it wouldn't have made much of a difference. With the way he gives up HR's, and the BArtolo COloN suspension, Oakland seems like it might be the landing spot for our favorite sheep in Wolf's clothing.
  3. Does BA struggle with judging fly balls that much or is he trying to keep the suspense there for the viewers? I honestly can't tell, but that ball looked to be gone by a solid distance.
  4. Just for fun, I hope the Brewers win this game 1-0 and Rusin gets his one hitter.
  5. Even if Castro is mediocre he'll be worth every penny of the $11 million he'll be getting in his three bought out FA years. I haven't watched him a ton but it doesn't seem like people are calling for him to be moved from SS in the near future. As a Brewers fan if you told me I could have an average fielding SS who could put up a consistent .270/.310/.410 line for $11 million per season I'd be fine with that. Going forward I expect Castro to be a bit better than that.
  6. You're right, that's my mistake. A friend of mine used to tell me ROE's counted in OBP because it raised his JV Highschool OBP up about 100 points. I don't think Ransom is part of the team next year but I won't be too upset if he's the 25th man on the roster. The fact is that most guys who fill the backup IF/utility man roster spot simply aren't very good players, and Ransom plays decent defense all over the infield and isn't a completely horrible batter. Yes, he's significantly below average at the plate, but a ~.300 wOBA out of a utility guy is pretty decent.
  7. Yeah, but those things are already in BA and OBP (errors are in OBP).
  8. That wasn't the point. The point is that a strikeout is really no worse than any other type of out.
  9. Great way to start the season, along with the Man City game. From what I hear, Everton looks to have a very solid club this year and should finish in the top half. Obviously a top four finish is still a huge longshot with the quality of ManCity, ManUtd, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, and even Newcastle. Maybe they can sneak into the Europa league though.
  10. In most situations, a strikeout is exactly the same as any other out. In some situations it's better, and in some it's worse. Cesar Izturis came to the plate 47 times with a runner on first and less than two outs this year, and he GIDP'd seven times. That's significantly worse than a strikeout. Izturis doesn't have a job on a MLB team right now, the Nationals kept him for about two weeks before releasing him. He hasn't been a MLB starter since 2010. And clearly there have been many horrible players who have not belonged on MLB rosters who continued to get a roster spot; that's hardly sufficient to say that they're worthwhile MLB players. Ransom is not a problem as a bench guy on a mediocre ballclub. He plays solid defense at three difficult positions. This is the first season where he's had a chance to put up over 200 PA's, and he's hitting .204/.297/.379. Again, you can't just ignore his performance with Arizona. But, given that this team is out of the running this year I'd have absolutely no problem if they decided to let him go and plug in Taylor Green and Jeff Bianchi to get them a few more PA's when the MiLB season ends.
  11. Figured we might as well start up a thread to talk about the 2012-13 season, whether it UCL, EPL, La Liga, USA qualification, etc. Great game between Southampton and Man City today; both teams had opportunities in the last 20 minutes or so but eventually Man City held on for a 3-2 win. Messi scored two goals within 10 minutes of his 2012-13 La Liga campaign. I'm really hoping Clint Dempsey can find a decent transfer. He's ~30 years old and probably only has a few good seasons left, and he deserves the opportunity to play in the Champions League. Obviously it's an ugly situation, so hopefully things work out soon.
  12. Greinke's ERA is now over 4 on the season. Before today's probable loss, LAA were four games back in the wildcard behind good ball clubs in Detroit, Baltimore, Tampa, and Oakland. They're looking like a playoff longshot at this point. I'm really happy he didn't agree to that contract.
  13. Is there any chance he could receive further punishments for this, or be in any sort of legal trouble? I'm not quite sure whether to laugh or shake my head. I'll do both.
  14. Tim Lincecum is 2nd to last in the NL in ERA at 5.45. Wolf's ERA is now 5.88. Good to see Wolf leading the league in something!
  15. H&T - My understanding is that players peak a few years earlier defensively than offensively. It's really not unreasonable to think that at the back end of a 4-year deal, Gomez will no longer be an elite defensive CF, although I imagine he'll still be good. Shane Victorino is the oldest of the qualified MLB CF'ers right now, and he's only 31. It wouldn't surprise me if CF'ers had he youngest defensive peak of any position, though I don't know if anybody has ever really looked into that.
  16. The deal has a $16MM option. It covers his four arbitration seasons and buys out three FA seasons along with the option to buy out a fourth. This seems like an extremely good deal for the Cubs, even if Castro is more of a .280/.320/.420 type of player. I don't see a breakdown yet, but I imagine it could be something like $4MM-$6MM-$8MM-$9MM-$11MM-$11MM-$11MM.
  17. His LD% is up 1.5 percentage points, his GB% is up 5.1 percentage points, and his FB% is down 6.5 percentage points. His xBABIP this season is .330 and I doubt it was that high in the past. So it's probably reasonable to expect a few more balls have squeaked through but his batted ball stats do suggest he should have a fairly high average on balls in play.
  18. Before this Melky could have been looking at what, ~5 years/$60 million? It will be interesting to see how much this hurts his next contract. I could see anything from 1 year/$10 million+incentives to 3/36. [sarcasm]poor guy[/sarcasm] Edit: I can't type.
  19. I think it's more like a Golden Retriever missing a leg. It's friendly, cuddly, and does its best to please you. Just not the greatest retriever. (Cue the Billy Madison .gifs for that silliness)
  20. At this point, I'm expecting a to get a call from Mr. Melvin. I have a wicked 45 MPH lob ball. I don't even care who they put in there anymore. Maybe just play it by match ups. Maybe bring up De Los Santos and give him a few tries.
  21. He's had control issues, but he has an electric arm and a high ceiling. He probably fits more into "project" category, but not too long ago he was considered a dark horse to emerge as the closer in Oakland. I wouldn't put too much stock in 30 innings in AAA this season, you just can't come to any meaningful conclusion about a guy based on so few innings.
  22. Eh, these things happen. It's not like he was wild. They just got on him tonight and drove the ball, put a couple just past Ransom. Not at all worried about Fiers.
