  1. We should have a "Mediocre But Loved Milwaukee Bullpen Alumni Association" (MBLMBAA) start during September. Sign guys like Derrick Turnbow and Matt Wise to each throw until their arms fall off and see what happens.
  2. [sarcasm]Sanchez Brothers? Jonathan and Mark?[/sarcasm]
  3. I won't mock you, they're amazing athletes who do things I can't even comprehend doing. I can't imagine what the weeks after the Olympics are like for these gymnasts. I know they have world championships and the like, but to reach the pinnacle of your career before you graduate high school, and then watch your skills deteriorate from age 18-22 must be really tough. And yes, the two from each country rule is absurd. Before today, I always thought the pool in Water Polo was only 5 feet deep. Now that I realize they're treading water and swimming the whole time, I find it much more impressive. I also can't stand the tape delays. For me to avoid hearing the result of the race yesterday I'd have to pretty much go internet free for the day, which I don't do.
  4. Perhaps a better measure of how bad the BP has been is the fact that they are dead last in MLB in WPA, at -6.05. ERA obviously treats an inning in a 10-1 blowout the same as an inning in a 2-1 game, while WPA does not. Bullpens are funny in that you can have an elite bullpen with a 4.50 ERA if you have one mop up clown who gives up 10 extra runs in every blowout but gets through the game, while you can also have a bad bullpen with a 4.50 ERA if every single person is a 4.50 ERA type guy. (Since 2010, there has been one team to post a lower WPA than the Brewers; the 2010 D-Backs posted a -8.37.)
  5. The only real clown we've had here that I remember in the last year was GhostofQuantrill, the classiest fan of the classiest team in the world. Some of my favorite things about him: - Quantrill was a confederate war hero. When discussing Cardinals players having "it", he made sure to mention that usually white guys have "it". Mike Cameron is a skeezball, but Chris Carpenter is a class act. I made a blatantly facetious rant towards him about how the Brewers, unlike the Cardinals, had sacrificed winning over the past 30 years to put classy players on the field, talking about how I want my children to understand that winning is not as important as being classy, yada yada yada. He fell hook line and sinker.
  6. Lucroy doesn't have a Mauer type bat. He plays a solid defensive catcher and has a league average bat. That makes for a very valuable player at catcher, and he doesn't have nearly as much value anywhere else on the field. So no, let's not move him.
  7. Since the game is on TBS, I get to be blacked out on MLB.tv and TBS, despite the fact that TWC doesn't broadcast Nats' games down here...
  8. I didn't do the math, but it looks like his career MiLB BABIP is ~.375 or so since joining the A's in 2008 in about 150 IP. Not sure if he's had horrendous defense behind him, it's just a product of having only 150 IP or so, or if there's something more to it.
  9. I don't typically care for it, but I thoroughly enjoy the US teams pummeling clearly mismatched opponents in any sport where they can do so.
  10. Rogers' career MiLB line is ~.200/.200/.350, and he does have a HR this season. I understand the lack of blue font.
  11. ^Ah, that makes more sense. I imagine the US women shouldn't have much trouble without Griner. I really enjoy watching them just pummel opponents, so hopefully they can get it started a bit earlier in their next game. In soccer, Neymar has looked as good as advertised from what I've seen, incredible dribbler.
  12. Roenicke would rather have Carlos Gomez in the 2-hole. Lucroy would be a natural pick for the 2-hole and the lineup would look pretty good with him there.
  13. Oakland is also really good place for Kottaras to land, and with how he performed in Milwaukee over the past three years he deserved a chance to get some playing time in MLB. Oakland catchers this season are hitting about .200/.250/.300, so Kottaras is a really good addition for him, even if he struggles defensively.
  14. That's a surprisingly good return. His AAA BABIP this season is .423 so that's a huge factor in the ~7 ERA. His peripherals over the last two seasons are pretty solid (55 IP, 64K:28BB, 2 HR). Obviously needs some work on the control. PitchFX says he throws a 96MPH 4-seamer, a 84MPH slider, and a 89MPH change. I wouldn't mind seeing him in MLB at this point. But, if the club thinks it would be better for him to work on some stuff in AAA I'd trust them with that. Service time obviously isn't a concern with a 26 year old reliever, so that's one less thing for us to argue about .
  15. Good to hear. Normally I'd be blacked out from that game on MLB.tv despite living hours south of DC. Hopefully TBS doesn't black out the game as well...
  16. I'm assuming Humberto Quintero. Not bad for a depth pickup in a season like this, he plays pretty good defense and will be a good guy to have in AAA working with our prospects. Any idea of the return for Kottaras?
  17. Thurston - I personally just regress the heck out of the defensive metrics and use a little bit of judgment on how to adjust a player's WAR based on their defense. Take Alcides Escobar, who is having a really nice season but has a UZR of ~-15, so only an fWAR of 1.0. I view Escobar as a +5 defensive guy per season, despite the oddball UZR number, so my back-of-the-envelope WAR number for him comes out to more like 2.5. It is pretty tough to judge "replacement level", as in reality it probably varies from year to year and era to era, although I have no idea how much. I think that fangraphs estimates "Replacement Level" as something like 20 runs below average over the course of a season, so you could just subtract 20/600 PA's or whatever to compare to an average player. I'm not sure how you would do the offensive metrics without Linear Weights. You could use something like WPA I suppose, but I don't really care for that approach.
  18. Didn't see a thread so I figured I'd start one. I was sorely disappointed when I realized Brittney Griner isn't on the 2012 Women's Basketball team. I was looking forward to watching her posterize some poor 5'5" Croatian today. Oh well. GO 'MERICA!
  19. This really is a great board. If you've ever read other baseball boards there is a much higher proportion of "junk" posts, rants, etc. Us die-hard ex-pats/out of staters really wouldn't get a chance to discuss Brewers baseball on a regular basis if it weren't for this forum. The mods here do a great job. Well, although I could have enjoyed letting that one Cards fan hang out for another day or so
  20. Of course. And let's remember that the Brewers offered CC and Prince 5/$100, while the Yanks and Tigers signed them for 7/$161 and 9/$204. Both of those guys might have preferred Milwaukee to their final landing spots, holding all else equal. They just clearly preferred NY/DET+$60-$100MM to Milwaukee. Greinke is a bit different because I imagine the Brewers' offer of 5/$110 will be much closer to his eventual FA contract. With the way the FA market seems to go these days, I wouldn't be surprised to see Greinke "settle" for 5/$100 and I also wouldn't be surprised to see him bring in 7/$150. Either way, the Brewers' offer to Greinke will be much more competitive than their offers to Prince and CC.
  21. I remember reading something via a reader on Fangraphs about some guy from the Dallas papers saying that in 2010, Texas could not possibly contend because they didn't have enough of a veteran presence. It amazes me how bad some sports journalists are at understanding sports.
  22. If it weren't for an innings limit (160?), Fiers would have a pretty decent chance at the NL ROY. I don't think any of us would have expected that at the start of the season!
