  1. It's almost like he wasn't sure whether to throw it or not, so he just compromised and threw the ball half-way there. Betancourt would be way more fun if instead of being the (semi) sure-handed man with cement shoes, he was similarly bad due to a combination of excellent range and a cement head. I'd rather have Betancourt get to a ball five feet to his right and then trip over his shoelaces than let it go by. That would be way more comical.
  2. I read that alot on this forum. And that is the thing: we need him to be significantly better than McGehee. Not "a little better" or "not any worse". When people say those things they are usually talking worst case scenario. We should expect him to be significantly better than McGehee; I think a .700-.750 OPS projection would be fair, along with better defense. That would be a significant upgrade.
  3. Baldkin, when I first saw the term used I thought "No, this is a TRAVESHAMOCKERY!". .320/.404/.548/.952 That's Taylor Green's slash line in AAA. He walks almost as often as he strikes out. His BABIP is .346, which is probably unsustainable but not ridiculously high. There's always a reasonably large chance that a prospect will flop. Even if he does flop though, I just don't see him being any worse than McGehee.
  4. Why is Willie Bloomquist leading off for the Diamondbacks? If Ron Roenicke put out a lineup where his 8th hitter was far better than his 1st hitter, I'd be pretty annoyed.
  5. I think with many of us being from Wisconsin, calling any athlete Brett makes us cringe.Huh? Brett who? That might be a problem if his name were Aaron Carroll, but I don't recall anybody named "Brett" to play sports in Wisconsin.
  6. Ando, that's an awesome list. You should be really proud of yourself for having the determination to sample all of those wonderful beers. I'm surprised you found a couple of Gose beers. I've only had one of those before and I loved it - so tart and refreshing, with almost a fresh funky sourdough character. Awesome style; Gose and Berliner Weisse are my two favorite German styles. I would probably kill for a New Glarus Berliner Weisse down here in this consistent 90+ degree heat. I might maim for a Moon Man.
  7. Can we just agree to call Brett Carroll "Brett". Every time I see Carroll come up and see people talking about what role Carroll should have with the team, I get all excited thinking the Brewers traded for Jamey Carroll. I feel like this Diamondbacks series has gone on forever. I'll be impressed if I make it past the second inning for tomorrow's 10:15 start time.
  8. Have either of you (flash or BUC) ever done any herding? Back when we lived in Iowa, I had an opportunity to take him out to herd some sheep but I felt like he was just too small at the time (he's a mini and he was only around 18-20 pounds at the time, now he's up to 23 and we're hoping he'll fill out to 30 pounds eventually). He is an incredibly rewarding dog, and despite the amount of work he requires I think I'll always own a Border Collie or an Aussie.
  9. Thanks a lot BUC. I knew you had a Border Collie so I was hoping you'd be able to chime in. We were told pretty much the same stuff about positive reinforcement with Aussies, so we've always tried to go that route. I do think the summer is really tough on him, when we were in Iowa and he was 9-12 months he would run and fetch at the dog park for over an hour straight. It's just so hot here in the summer that when I take him to the park and throw him a ball he'll play hard for 15 minutes and then take a nap under a picnic table while he cools down. I'll shoot you a PM later about some exercises if you don't mind, that would probably be really helpful.
  10. I didn't stay up past the 5th inning, but I have absolutely no problem with Roenicke pulling Narv-Dog for K-Rod in the 8th. Narveson was obviously pitching well, but there is no way I'd ever take Narveson in the 8th inning of a game over K-Rod in the 8th inning. How many times have we seen Narveson all of a sudden give up a few runs after "cruising"? I do think this is one case where whatever move Roenicke made, so long as the club gave up the lead, many on this board would have been upset. I think K-Rod was probably more likely to get out of that 8th inning with the lead than Narveson was. I rag on Roenicke for a lot of his decisions, but I think this was a good one. This season Narveson has a .876 OPS against the third time through the order, and for his career his OBP against and OPS against both jump about 50 points when he is going through the order for the third time.
  11. Not if his competition is Carlos Gomez vs. a right handed pitcher.Plush has a career .314 average against righties, so as long as he continues to face 90% righties, we shouldn't be surprised if he hits .300. He should be good for at least a .330-.340 OBP if he's good for a .300 average.
  12. Did anybody see the video of K-Rod doing this? A nice "salute", hopefully this wasn't intentional. http://deadspin.com/58233...od-is-here-to-salute-you
  13. To answer the original question: NO! For all I care they can trade Nashville's ballpark for a shortstop. Sell Telfair field to a Russian oil mogul if need be. Just go for it.
  14. I had no idea Carroll was such a defensive whiz. UZR, DRS, and Fans Scouting Report all give him rave reviews. He should be a pretty good replacement for Gomez.
  15. My thought upon seeing this thread: "That's probably for the best".
  16. Desmond makes a lot of errors but he has good range and a strong arm. He is probably average at best in the field. He's not a good hitter but he is probably not worse than Yuniesky at the plate. He's really not anything special, but he would be a moderate upgrade over Betancourt.
  17. That makes me miss my days of playing MVP Baseball 2005. I used to do dynasty mode, acquire three elite pitchers, and then have them each start 50-60 games, go 8 innings each time, and fill out the rest of my roster with a few good hitters and some scrubs. That was the easy route to 110 wins per season.
  18. Yeah, there are actually three within five miles of us and an awesome one five minutes from our apartment. The Chapel Hill/Carrboro area is really dog friendly so it's a really nice place to be with a dog. He does love going to the park and I try to take him as often as I can, but my wife and I dropped down to only one car when we moved and when she's at work I can't go with him to the park. He loves jogging with me, but unless it's before 9:00 AM or after 8:00 PM it's just too hot to run. He's really good about not going up to other people or dogs when I have him off leash (although I don't take him in crowded areas), so I think the whole bird chasing thing is going to be tough to train away because it probably is instinct. I'm hoping this is just part of his teenage rebellious stage, as I've heard Aussies can be a boatload of work from 1 year to 18 months, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for all the advice. TLB - good to hear about your dog, he must be a pretty resilient guy.
  19. Thanks. We've just started working on some more commands with him. I think it's a good idea to start working more seriously on the "come" command. We relaly hadn't worked on it much in the past because he would always come to us when we called his name in the past. It's amazing how much these dogs are like human children; once they reach their teen years they act like they've forgotten everything they've been taught.
  20. Also keep in mind with the whole Yuni vs. Casey debate that Casey was a good player for two seasons. I don't think anybody could have reasonably expected him to fall off this drastically. Everybody knew Yuni would suck, and nothing was done about it. But yeah, McGehee has been as bad as Betancourt this season.
  21. I thought the second run was supposed to be scored as an unearned run because Morgan's putout would have been the third of the inning. Thanks to Yuni, I'm now more knowledgeable about trivial baseball scoring rules. Edit: Now an unearned run. Darn you Yuni for confusing me.
  22. Guys, quit ripping on Yuni. You're all too negative. Yuni is smoking the ball to a tune of .227/.239/.295/.534 in July. If you double his OBP and SLG, he's almost as good as Jose Bautista.
  23. Is McGehee a legitimate zero tool player at this point? He hits for a low average, hits for almost no power, is a horrible base runner, and has little range in the field. His arm isn't bad, but it's probably no better than average.
  24. HUH? Man would it be embarrassing to give up a HR to Yuni. I always wonder why pitchers don't just throw three straight balls in the dirt against Yuni.
  25. Just wanted to bump this because I'm looking for some advice. Our mini Aussie is now 13 months old and he is entering the dreaded "teenager" stage we were worried about (from 12-18 months, we've heard that Aussies are stubborn, strong-willed, and rebellious). He has loads of energy and in the past he behaved very well off leash and I had no qualms about taking him off leash every night at the local high school to throw him tennis balls and get him some exercise. The last couple times I took him out though, he wouldn't listen to me. When he sees a bird he goes nuts and chases it with little regard for my commands to him. Most of the time he is very responsive, but if he is chasing a bird or squirrel his mind seems to be so focused that he is completely unaware of everything else around him. Anybody have any suggestions as to how I can work on this behavior? It's really difficult to get him the exercise he needs when it's consistently 90 degrees out, so I'm hoping we can get back to playing ball at night. Thanks
