I don't know, I could be convinced of either side. Kids do dumb things...you're still pretty much a kid when you're 18-20(the age of most top prospects). So I could excuse most of the dumb things they do. The steeling a laptop by Cam or whatever. I'd probably have a guy like Tyreke Hill or Joe Mixon off my board, but even then, I don't know the details and I could see how a GM or a coach could be convinced that a kid has genuine remorse and that one mistake by an 18-year-old shouldn't be the end. And with regard to Smith...does he even go down as a miss for the 49'ers in their book? 35.5 sacks in his first 32 games, two deep playoff runs including a SB. 45 sacks his first 3 years and then he starts getting into trouble. So do they look at it as a guy who ruined his career and cost himself every chance to make generational money for his family, or is it just, "well, the years we did get were worth it." As long as guys have freak talent as he did, teams will be willing to take a risk on them. And I don't even remember Smith being a guy with problems coming into the NFL. So it's no wonder you hear some of the ridiculous questions they ask. Like the one front office that asked a player about what it was like growing up with his mother being a sex worker. I guess that's meant to see how emotional the player gets, but...it just all feels so flawed and pointless. It feels like they treat them like race cars. They're not meant to make it past the race, they just need to get them through it. Feels like they could probably be a bit more proactive, but I don't know. They're also their employer, not their parent.
