Game 4: Eagles @ Packers - Thursday, Sept 26 7:20pm

Yeah, I saw this also. I think maybe this is why people are talking about the Eagles not having a great defense. Otherwise when healthy, they have as much talent as the Bronco's or the Vikings on defense. They have an elite pass rusher in Cox, they have edge rushers...but with 3 days left and them being forced to turn around so quickly and fly out to GB, I can't see a good reason for the Packers to not win this game. This SHOULD be the game the Packers offense starts to get it going a bit more. I don't think they break out just yet, I think it's going to take at least half a year to see them hitting their stride. But they should be able to run the ball on a tired, beat up D and they should be able to score some early points. Also, the Eagles seem like they're a worse team with Wentz in there. Kinda a weird situation where they were better with Foles for some reason. -

I'd have brought him back if we could have gotten him a bit cheaper, but not JUST to play MLB'er. More of a pass rush specialist. But not quite for 2/16 or whatever he got. Both Matthews and Cobb we signed to very team friendly deals. I think people are "happy," to see them gone just because they were so overpaid the last few years. But Cobb at 5 million or Clay at 7...those are pretty team friendly deals. -

Exactly what happened. Linsday's great effort got him to the half yard line, but it was Risner that should get credit for getting him across. And that is supposed to be a 10 yard penalty... Yeah, that's one of those penalties that I don't think I've ever seen enforced. At least not in a while. The rule's the same in College, the only place I've seen it enforced and even ND fans weren't really complaining after that Leinart QB sneak where Bush came up and pushed him into the Endzone. -

They play Dallas before the Lions, so an extended break before Dallas, then an extra day for the Lions. It's pretty amazing to see the Packers fortuitous health thus far in the season as well. I'm used to a few guys going down by now. But so far, it's really just been Greene and Burks and both should be back. Greene from what I've read...though it wasn't exactly definitive, sounded like he would be out 6-8 weeks. Burks should be back relatively soon.

I think they still could use one more CB if they want to take one more step as a defense. Right now they've got two really good cover corners, one great one...potentially in Alexander. Jalen Ramsey was/is really a pipe dream, but Patrick Peterson is going to be traded by the Cards when he gets back. At least that's pretty much what both sides have said. He wants to play for a contender, the Cards aren't close to being that. He's not gonna cost a 1st round pick, probably a 4th or so. And he was still elite last year. If you get Raven Greene back, add PPat for a year(or two)....and you see Gary and Kingsley keep improving, this could be a good enough defense to slow Mahomes down enough to beat them. I don't know what you can hope to hold him to...it seems like ever WR'er they have runs a 4.2-something, but they don't have a great defense. I think the Cowboys will be just as big of a test for us. We struggled a bit vs the Vikings run game and Dallas has a better OL and more not as explosive of a back, but one that wears your D down play after play. -

When I saw him go down for a second from an ankle issue...whatever it was, all I could think of was all the experts who'd already labeled the guy a bust and were guaranteeing he was the next Justin Harrell. It was awesome to see him run through the TE, then running through whoever they had out there at RT. It showed why we should be so excited about him....and why expectations should be tempered for a big rookie year. The speed, the strength, the bend...but he's also only really got that bull rush or a speed rush where a good tackle like either of ours will most likely ride him out. But man-he is explosive and he's active. Once he improves the hand fighting and can add just one or two counter moves, he's really gonna be fun to watch. We already hit big with Savage, if Gary realizes his potential, that could potentially be similar to the impact Raji/Matthews had after switching to the 34. -

I disagree here, once the RB was first hit at the 3 or 4 yard line everyone on the defense needed to run to the play and finish it. Tramon was standing around on the goal line watching the play, I am sure he is not the only one who thought the play was stuffed. I am very happy with the defense so far but they need to play stronger, still too much yardage after contact and broken tackles which has been a problem for years now. It's an attitude, great defenses have guys who run to the ball and are physical. There was a play earlier where King gave up a catch in front of him and actually backed up and waited for someone else in the middle to make the tackle and the wideout gained a few extra yards because of it. I know you don't want to give up containment but geez you gotta stick your nose in there and make a tackle. Tramon was lined up on the opposite side of the field, ran to the ball and as he got there, Lindsay spinned back inside and he was walled off by Risner. Calling that a lack of effort...I don't want to be combative, so I'll just say I strongly disagree. That was 100 Lindsay on that play. Saying that wasn't a good effort because the LCB didn't make the play is questionable. Saying he was "standing around," is just flat out wrong. I just don't see this like you I guess. You're talking about a back coming downhill, spinning and extending over the goal line. Saying the effort wasn't there...that's tough to stop at any level. It's not a matter of just not "sticking your nose in there." Now if you want to argue the defense didn't have a good day tackling in the open field, that's a matter of opinion. I'd agree with it. They started trying to rake the ball out at times. At other times like with King, he just did a bad job. He missed Lindsay on that 40 yard reception he had..came flying in wildly trying to dive at his legs without wrapping up. I can live with that myself as he's spent most of the first two years playing like Woodson used to and he just hasn't been able to hold up physically. As for the Sutton play, I don't know which one you're talking about. I am assuming it was the one where Redman was late getting over since that was the only big play he had. If that is the one, he didn't gain any more yards. Yeah, you'd better contain there. You've got Redmen coming back in bounds after overrunning him in the first place...the last thing you want up by one Score is to give up a 90-95 yard catch and run there with someone as dangerous as Sutton. And maybe they weren't playing zone, maybe King blew the coverage. Kinda tough to know without being able to see what the other CB's were doing and I can't see....but I'm more inclined to guess that Redman was late than King was playing man and just got beat that badly. Again, I didn't think the tackling was good today, but not due to a lack of effort. More gap integrity and then just too many 4-6 yard runs turning into 8-12 yard runs, but not at all because of the play at the goal line or a play in which King backed off Courtland and waited split second until pursuit got there and they didn't end up gaining any more yards out of it. -
I hate the overrated chant. All you're doing is downplaying your own win. Well...you're also taunting one of your biggest rivals. It'd be best for us though if they went out and just played more aggressively on offense. They have a good QB. They have huge, extremely talented WR'ers. I was really kinda shocked when we were playing press man with just a single high safety vs that WR'er core. And I REALLY can't understand how Army was able to slow them down other than Michigan just isn't utilizing those guys well enough. Taking the Badgers out of the equation, it looks like there are 6-7 elite teams as of now. Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and ND and LSU...if the Swamp Monster's offense is for real(and it looks like it is). UFC actually had a chance to get in this year if they didn't lose that amazing game vs Pitt last night. Kudos to Pitt for taking a page out of the Eagles playbook(or at least a play out of it).
-
I don't think a one loss ND gets in over a 1 loss Big Ten champ unless the Badgers get blown out in Columbus. They were only #7 coming in this week and will drop a bit, their schedule just isn't tough enough the rest of the way for the committee to overlook the conference champion criteria no matter how much they want to. Of course there are other variables, maybe OSU loses 3 other times and Wisconsin's schedule ends up looking sort of weak as well. I think 8 teams is the right number, seed the teams and give the top 4 home games the week after the conference championships and then have the same final 4 format as now. Then you also have the power 5 championships as play in games as well which should boost ratings there. Seems like a no brainer to me but it will be a few more years before they change it I am sure. This probably depends on how talented you think UGA is. I happen to think they're an elite team that's on the same level as Clemson and Alabama. And if they manage to beat Alabama this year, then that one loss for ND really helps them. I honestly didn't even really consider ND because they always seem to be wildly overrated, but the way they played Georgia last night was impressive.

Yeah, the biggest stories have been the absolutely dumpster fire AB's career has become, the dumpster fire the Dolphins team has become and then injuries to two future HOF QB's.
-
I don't know if I should feel bad for him or not. It's a real possibility this guy has very real psychological issues. Or is this a guy who's suffering from CTE already? You know Drew Rosenhaus is saying, "just let-your-lawyers-handle-it, Ok AB?" I don't just assume he's guilty of the worst of the accusations....he may be, but I just don't assume it. But he was STILL alright despite them. He was still playing in the absolute perfect system for him. It's like if they picked a team he could go to in order to advance his place in NFL history at the WR'er position by winning a Super Bowl, catching 120 balls and putting up a historic season and win a Ring...and he still blew it. Crystal Clear language in the contract that they could void it if he did anything while a member of the Patriots and he sends these vaguely threatening-clearly harassing messages to an accuser? Dude, it's going to be so hard for someone to actually get you in trouble if you just shut up and let your lawyer deal with it. And obviously that's not right, it's just the fact. It's a civil case, and a tough one to prove at that. But you just can't help but line that bridge with dynamite and just blow it to hell. Not just a little gasoline and a match, you have to blow the bridges up. I actually wanted this guy. I thought how he handled the Steelers sitution was poor, but I also thought how the Steelers handled it was bad. So he moved on, he's not a bad guy at that point, just a needy and annoying one. But...wow, just gone downhill from there. That said, he wasn't wrong in the comments he made about Kraft or Big Ben.

They won’t play in lightning so hopefully just rain. I love crazy weather games...usually prefer it not be the Packers though. The other day I saw highlights from an older Eagles game where they played in heavy snow to start and then had quite a few inches of snow to deal with on the ground after that. Worst snow game I can ever recall, but man it made for one wacky game. I'm not sure what Eagles game you're referring to, but do you remember or have you seen any video of the famous Eagles-Bears fog game? I don't know how they completed passes as you just couldn't see anything. It was almost comical.
-
[sarcasm]No they don't. They only look good because they're getting turnovers and then scoring. If it wasn't for the defense and the turnovers, they'd be losing...[/sarcasm] Seriously though, they do. Even though that offense hasn't looked great. Even when Brees was in for the most part. Still, people wanted to bury them when they knew Brees was going to be out for a while, but that's a really solid defense and they've got a good, established backup. And Seattle is a hard team to read. 21-20 over Cincy, a close win over the Steelers even after they lost Big Ben. I bet on NO, but I didn't expect them to dominate Seattle. Kamara and Thomas are pretty special though. Clowney just blew up a running play and Kamara just ran through his tackle. That's impressive. ----That first line should be showing up in Blue.

Well, everyone Packer fan would tout how we had the best receiving core in the NFL during that time period, so I think we appreciated them at the time. I think now fans certainly still rave about Nelson and Driver specifically as two all time fan-favorites. Jones as well, but a little less. And then most just chalk up Jennings, the smoothest, most natural route runner and athlete among the four as someone who was only good because Packers QB's made him good...but that's largely because of how he left. But yeah, Mahomes is incredible and he's got guys running 4.2-something 40's out there running routes for him. But he's also in a system he's perfectly comfortable with. But if you go back to the Super Bowl season, Nelson was not yet established. He put up numbers almost identical to what Valdes-Scantling put up LAST season. That was Nelson's 3rd year in the league and MVS's rookie year. Jones numbers weren't much better while Allison had 300 yards in 4 games last year. Jennings was similar to Adams, both in their primes. Driver's the guy we don't really have a comp for. One of the reasons that I thought we should have brought Cobb back IF we could have signed him to the same type of deal, 1/5, but he was a 35 year old WR'er who was steady, but no longer spectacular. Maybe a Jimmy Graham type player? Our TE's were Quarless and Crabtree once Finley went down. Mahomes is a fun guy to watch, but you can also see he has that offense absolutely down. I mean, he's literally throwing no-look passes while scrambling. It takes a while to get into a rhythm. -

They have an elite offensive line. They Jenkins is finally starting. I think you're ridiculously wrong when you say they have ZERO Tight Ends worth mentioning. They have Robert Tonyan who's got as much talent at that position as anyone we've had since Finley. I don't believe MVS is is "just a a guy." So I just reject this entire premise. But you start off by saying, other than, and include a young RB that was rated as the 7th best heading into the season by PFF, a guy who averaged 5.5 yards the last two years. A historically GREAT, not just good QB. Davante Adams, an elite #1 WR'er.... Oh yeah, and they have probably the best pass blocking tackles in the NFL and one of the best centers in the league. So yeah, I don't agree with the assessment of the talent of some of the players or how your question is framed. It's framed as though this is a baseball team and you're listing a lineup....hitters 1-9....as if one position doesn't impact the other. You see the offenses upside when you see how they play early in games. When they're running scripted plays, when they're running the plays they're comfortable with. That seems like a pretty obvious indication to me that this offense is just a work in progress. I'd certainly like to see a Greg Jennings type player. I think he'd be incredibly helpful. But they have plenty of talent at WR'er. -

HiAndTight replied to homer's topic in Other Sports
I can understand some frustration....but I never felt nervous about the Bronco's coming back. They have good players. That TD that Lidsay scored, that wasn't a poor effort by the defense. That was a great effort by the defense. It was just an incredible effort by the RB. Clark crossed his mans face, and just couldn't hold onto his leg/foot as he was going to the ground, Lowry stood his man up, but he's still engaged as he's trying to bring Lindsay down... The Packers have trailed for about 5-6 minutes this entire season. They lead Minnesota wire to wire, led the Bronco's wire to wire(the team that should have beat the 12-4 Bears last week)....they're 3-0 going into a home game on Thursday night vs the Eagles. A game that should be tough, but is just brutal for the road team. This is as encouraged I've been as a Packer fan for a long time. If I had to really nitpick area's of the team I wish were a bit better, I'd say I wish we had a better slot WR'er. A guy who's a little quicker and can create that immediate separation...and maybe get Raven Greene or a good 3rd safety who can play in the box. Other than that, this team is talented, they're undefeated and they're almost certainly ascending. And I would not be surprised to see Gute go out and add talent at the deadline. Ramsey was really a fantastical idea, but someone like Patrick Peterson sure isn't. A vet who is likely to be traded and could be had for a ~4th round pick and who has a relatively cheap cap number this year of 7 million. Or whoever, that's not really the point, the point is, this team looks good and the Front Office is aggressive and seems willing to go and add to a strength, something I always love seeing. Especially in the secondary. This are good in Packerland right now...and as long as they don't suffer a spate of injuries, there's little reason to expect them to do anything but continually improve the rest of the year. -

I'm really curious what you guys expected. LaFleur's is putting in a whole new offense and he's doing it while facing elite defenses. Did anyone really think this was gonna be like the 2011 season? I thought a 3-6 start was very realistic and even if they did start that poorly, they'd still have a chance to get hot and on a roll with the schedule over the final 9 games. Now they're sitting at 3-0 with Philly coming to Green Bay on a Thursday Night and we're talking about Rodgers not being elite? Again, I just took it for granted this offense was going to struggle early on. First, they did even under McCarthy's offense for the most part, one that Rodgers was more comfortable in, 2nd offense is just always behind defenses in the first quarter of the season, but mostly, it's a whole new scheme. Not just for Rodgers to learn. For the OL to learn, for the WR'ers.... I'm thrilled with how this team has looked. They hit big time on the FA signings on defense, they look like they hit BIG on Savage....we're seeing just glimpses of what Gary can do when he ran through the TE and then just threw the tackle into Flacco and got the sack. Alexander/King is finally showing what it's capable of. And Rodgers is still an elite QB....but when you're going up against that Bears defense, the Vikings and the Bronco's and you go 3-0 and you lead wire to wire in the last two and for most of the first one? Look at what the team is doing on the first few series of the games. The way they went up and down the field on the Vikings, the way they were able to move the ball on the Bronco's. When you're in a new system that you're not familar with, that's pretty telling...at least to me what that offense is capable of. And the fact that they struggle after that just tells me that the 11 guys on offense just aren't on the same page yet. And who'd expect them to be. -
Low-leverage and working with the pitching coach this year. Lots of off-season work at the pitching lab. Work him into high-leverage during spring training. I'm glad he pitched well last night, but I would have just sat him down for the rest of this year. I suppose getting him some clean innings at the end of the year can help his mental state, but I'd think just letting him take a break and then start again next year when pitchers report...and even then starting him in AA would be better for him.
-
That would make it interesting. I think UGA, 'Bama and Clemson will get in. So if we beat OSU in the B10 Championship, for us to not make it, there'd have to be another undefeated/1 loss team. That's likely Oklahoma. They have Texas and that's pretty much it on that schedule. TCU is a good team usually, but it's really just that Texas game and that program's not the same as it has been.

Yeah, but do you do alright betting on "your," teams? Betting on teams you root for and are emotionally invested in? I've lost way more than I've ever won better on in-state teams. Especially the Packers.
