  1. At this point it would seem that we'll sign Hawkins without having to worry about arbitration. He's been solid, and is still regaining his velocity and stuff after major surgery. His historically low ERA and WHIP rates, with high strikeout rates are reasons to keep him around
  2. I'm in no hurry to trade Hart, however, replacing him with Komatsu would likely improve the offense and defense. Komatsu would likely be a nice avg/obp guy with some pop, but the key is that he profiles as a good solid player that makes productive outs. His OBP would play nicely in the 2 or 6-8 holes. Of course, without Fielder we might have to consider finally putting Morgan or someone else leadoff to make better use of Rickie's power.
  3. understood YoungGeezy, but I always figure it never hurts to talk about the financial side of how teams now are paying more for OBP than ever before.
  4. wow jwill, I mentioned the D'Amico comparison in the draft forum...we think alike
  5. I hate to jinx things, but his delivery reminds me of a loopy version of Jeff D'Amico. When I say loopy, I mean like how Axford has totally unnecessary arm floppiness before delivering the ball. Besides that, lots of big leaguers have similar mechanics. I like that the ball gets low in his take away, as that's always common with sinker-ballers that want to get on top of the ball. It's a pretty effortless 94 in this game.

  10. Josh, if he's very raw and athletic, might I suggest giving him some statistical data to show that MLB teams are valuing batting eye and plate discipline more than ever. It can drive us crazy as fans that these guys often think hitting is the only way to the big leagues, when defense and OBP are often just as important as AVG and SLG
  11. Josh, congrats on the signing. Any comments on what he'll bring to the organization and what we can expect?
  12. I'm not anointing Big Brock as anything yet. I was just trying to point out that based on his brief career he's shown more power potential than anyone in the system not named Katin. He now has 66 career homers (and 94 doubles), a Career OPS over .800, a career OBP in the .340 range. If he were 23 in A+, people would be saying "he's a fringe prospect that could be in for a breakout year if he learns to hit roughly .275 and strikeout at less Brandon Wood-like paces." I guess I'm viewing his age as 25, but I'm subtracting a few years since a) he's Canadian and likely hasn't played as much as American counterparts and b) he pitched for 2 seasons (I think) before converting to becoming a hitter. I've enjoyed following him in the link report the last few years as one of our organization's few legit power sources. Do I think he'll be a big leaguer? probably not. But if he figures things out like some other raw sluggers have an an advanced age (Nelson Cruz, Jose Bautista, Jose Guillen to name a few recently) and starts to turn 10-20% of his strikeouts into balls put in play, he could suddenly jump onto the radar of a lot of people. Morris has done well for himself thus far (especially with SLG), but will need to make strides with his OBP before being promoted to AA.
  13. except Big Brock took several years off from hitting. He's really pretty raw and the equivalent of more a 22 years old
  14. TheCrew, he's at least as legit a prospect at 1b as Morris right now, since he both slugs and draws walks. Morris is really doing neither, but should progress over time
  15. To me Casey is just flying open with his front side. He's driving plenty of balls to the outfield, but they're all landing as outs. He's used to go to all fields more, but not so much lately
  16. 1992Casey, I don't recall that. What I do remember is that USAtoday (I think) did a metric of best winning percentages of managers in 1-run games (where perhaps a manager can make a difference) and it found that Yost remarkably had one of the top winnings percentages in 1-run games despite never having stability at the back of the pen
  17. colby, just kind of a funny question here, but are there ever any kids that throw knucklers that get drafted? It seems most are converted to it, but it would be interesting to find a kid that's thrown it since he was 12 or 13 and draft him at 18 or 21. I remember Lance Niekro threw a nice one in the AFL warmups, but his conversion to pitcher didn't last long in the minors.
  18. Orlando Arcia is also an OBP machine with twice the walks as k's! Is his MLE better than Betancourt? just kidding
  19. I had two former students drafted today in rounds 14 and 18, I believe. Seeing as it's that low, I hope both go to college.
  20. any early predictions for tomorrow's round 2 pick?
  21. If his stuff is back, then he's a legit prospect and can move quickly. I like the tentative approach.
  22. it's quite possible the Brewers having him working on a 2-seamer to be a better pitcher. Once he harnesses his command, he could be given a green-light to throw a 4-seamer (assuming my initial assumption is correct). Sheets threw 91-92 his first years in MLB working on a sinker before having his breakout years reaching back and throwing his 4-seamer 94-98 mph
  23. http://finance.yahoo.com/...st-discount-airlines-wsj This new article supports what many of us have said--that Southwest simply is no longer a low fare carrier.
